I am writing my own SMS application that will display a toast of my message once it arrive. Now is it possible to delete the message after the display of the toast, so that it will not go into the native SMS application?

In my application I've implemented such that pressing the hardware volume keys displays a Toast with the current volume. Things go well most of the times. However long presses of the volume keys do succeed in crashing my application. The Log generated on crash is the following...
The approach I follow:
I have a toast Object and for every key press event detected I inflate a view ,set the view elements within, set it to the toast and then show the toast.
Any idea what is going wrong ? code...
I use my file explorer a lot. It eliminates much of the "You have to put the files here" sort of requirement of many applications. And in many case - movie files for example - when you touch the file, it opens it in the appropriate application. There are exceptions like *.epub files. When I touch one, I get the famous "...does not support." message. So the question is, can I "register" Laputa (for example) to be the app to open *.epub files - Similar to the File Types dialog in Windows?I suppose this might require root access?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWe have a web application and we've built phone applications (iPhone, Android, BlackBerry) to be companions to the site. The usual workflow is that an existing user of the site gets a phone app and then plugs their existing credentials into the phone app and they are off and running, but more often now we are seeing folks who are downloading the app and then (and this should not surprise anyone) don't read the help screen that explains they need to go and get credentials at the web site and therefore cannot connect to the application which does require registration to manage their content. This is a giant usability fail condition.
So we know that we need to put user registration workflows on the phone app. Other than the obvious solution of duplicating our registration page on the mobile, does anyone know of a better identity solution for the phone? For example, on the desktop we also use Facebook Connect as an identity server and the users love it. I'm looking for something that simple that we can implement across the major smartphone platforms.
Clarifying note: I should add here that this registration mechanism is likely to; and it would be desirable if it did, go hand in hand with a general identity/authorization mechanism such as the Facebook mechanism mentioned below. One other place I'm poking around is to see whether there's an openId solution that does not require a browser to pop up.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe built-in barcode scanner application on Android (based, I think, on zxing) reads QR Codes and launches that data into an application based on the leading text. public class HelloAndroid extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); TextView tv = new TextView(this); tv.setText("Hello, Android"); setContentView(tv); String extn = android.webkit.MimeTypeMap.getFileExtensionFromUrl("/data/a.xyz"); String xyzMimeType = android.webkit.MimeTypeMap.getSingleton().getMimeTypeFromExtension (extn); Log.d ("HelloAndroid", "extn: " + extn + " | xyzMimeType: " + xyzMimeType); }

I love my Droid X. I downloaded PdaNet and paid for it. I received the receipt and clicked on the Pdanet tray icon and hit the register button. I wasn't smart enough to use copy and paste for the serial number and I typed it in instead. Tried three times (my typing isn't that bad) and all tries failed and the register button disappeared from the icon. I have tried to obtain help from PdaNet but no luck so far. The app is worthless to me if I can't access secure sites so I am ready to go in a different direction unless one of you can give me a suggestion for registering PdaNet.

Text message application for Android that will be non-intrusive. I am currently using Handscent SMS. It sucks when I am playing a game or watching a youtube video and someone sends me a message. It stops the game or pauses youtube.
My friend let me use his iphone for a few minutes the other day and I really like the way text messaging shows up. If in a game or watching a youtube video it just shows up at the top of the screen. The game and youtube video would continue without pausing. Then you can decide if you want to reply to the message or not. Any apps that have this sort of functionality?

My application launches a thread to query the web for some data. I want to display a Toast message when nothing is found, but my application always crashes. I've tried using the application Context from within the thread, like so: Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "testttt", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); I've also tried creating a Runnable with the Toast call and calling runOnUiThread(runnable) from the Thread (the Toast call in this runnable uses the Activity as the first parameter). Does anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish this?

I looked for any information about onTap event processing for itemized overlays in this group. There is a lot of useful information but I could not find the answer to one question.
The tutorial by Mark Murphy on itemized overlays, http://androidguys.com/?p=1413
describes how to generate a Toast message whenever an onTap event occurs. In his case, the custom itemized overlay activity is included in the main activity. In my case, it is not. My custom itemized overlay activity is included in the application package as a public activity.
This means that the line Toast.makeText(NooYawk.this, items.get(i).getSnippet(), Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); will not work "as is".
I have had trouble in correctly identifying the context for the Toast. Attempts to use the main class' (the one calling the custom itemized overlay class) context have not worked. I would appreciate it if anyone could suggest how I could resolve this issue. Incorporating the custom itemized overlay class in the main class is not a desirable option.
Alternatively, I would appreciate any suggestions for generating a display of the title and/or snippet information for markers on a map.
The onTap event works fine (Log.i statements in the onTap method display the correct information for each marker tapped)
Would anyone know how to test for the appearance of a Toast message on an Activity? I'm using code similar to what the OP posted on this question for testing my program flow from one activity to the next. I'd also like to be able to test for toast messages on particular activities.
