General :: How To Use H/W Accelerated Video Decoding In Coding

Jul 7, 2012

Ways to implement H/W acceleration for video decoding(eg. H.264) in my own app for a long time, but got no clue.

I want to call H/W decoding based on NAL or frame level over raw bitstream, rather than setting up a media player for files.

Android :: RTP Stream Video Decoding

May 24, 2010

Currently I am developing an application that will stream video using RTP and SIP. I have this mostly working with audio working fine both ways using Java (and native) codecs. I can stream out video also from the camera to a windows client.

The problem comes from when I want to receive and decode the video on the android platform. I understand at this stage that Mediaplayer only supports RTSP streams. Ironically it does what I need (by getting the SDP information from using RTSP SETUP call and using that RTP/UDP information to receive the stream). But I can't seem to access this functionality, all it takes as input is a RTSP url. If you are unfamiliar the difference between RTSP using RTP and SIP using RTP. You can read about the differences here<http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~hgs/rtsp/faq.html#rtsp_sip> .

What I need to do is take an RTP stream encoded with h.263-1998 and somehow pass it to the mediaplayer (or even a lower level api if somebody can provide an example).

The only way I can think around this is to write another service to receive the RTP stream and provide an RTSP interface... but this is a really ugly solution.

Android :: Why Aren't The 2D Graphics API & UI Toolkit Hardware Accelerated?

Sep 16, 2010

I've been developing Android application for quite awhile now. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know the UI toolkit and 2D graphics API aren't hardware accelerated (the official documentation states that Canvas is not accelerated). I've found that most non- trivial animation or blending operations are painfully slow even on mid-level devices like a Droid, even after taking much time to optimize my code.

I'd like to know what the rationale is for not providing hardware support for these frameworks? Wouldn't it be possible to at least make it optional for vendors to implement support? Does anyone have any additional information about this issue?

Android :: Threaded BitmapFactory Image Decoding

Oct 15, 2010

Our Android app does a lot of image decoding. We fetch a lot of images from the internet, local storage caches, etc. Up to now, these images are being decoded on the UI thread (using BitmapFactory.decodeX() methods). It's been causing some timeout crashes because the UI doesn't respond quickly enough to user input.

I could write a little AsyncTask that encapsulates decoding, but I'm not sure that's a good idea. Spawning threads is expensive, and that would be spawning and tearing down a ton of them. So what's the best way to put this on another thread? Do I need to go to the extent of writing a Service? That seems a little heavy-weight. Are there any solutions for this already out there?

Android :: Lossless Rotation Of A Jpeg Image Without Fully Decoding

Aug 23, 2009

I would appreciate to hear from you what would be the available options in Android to perform a lossless jpeg rotation of a jpeg image -> Rearranging the image data from landscape to portrait by rotation without ever fully decoding the image. My problem is that my device's camera always take the images in landscape mode and sometimes I would need to rotate the image to portrait to be used in my application. This takes time and memory if I need to do it in the standard way (decode the image, apply rotation operation to the pixels and encode again). Doing it without decoding the image would bring a significant improvement in performance. I have seen that in Android platform (Cupcake) jpegtran.c (which performs this operation beautifully) is available under /external/jpeg but this functionality is not available (a.f.a.k) on the application framework. How can I use this function? I guess I need to use JNI to be able to access this functionality, right? Other ways? Could you give me any hint on how I could do this or if there is another easier and quicker way to do it?

Android :: Audio Stream Trans Coding?

Jan 11, 2010

Let me first state that I do not know Java. I'm a .NET developer with solid C# skills, but I'm actually attempting to learn Java and the Android SDK at the same time (I know it's probably not ideal, but oh well, I'm adventurous :)) That said, my end goal is to write a streaming media player for Android that can accept Windows Media streams. I'm okay with restricting myself to Android 2.0 and greater if I need to. My current device is a Motorola Droid running Android 2.0.1. There is one online radio service I listen to religiously on my PC that only offers Windows Media streaming, and I'd like to transcode the stream so my Android device can play it.

Is such a thing possible? If so, would it be feasible (i.e., would it be too CPU intensive and kill the battery)? Should I be looking into doing this with the NDK in native code instead of Java? I'm not opposed to writing some sort of service in between that runs on a desktop computer (even in C#), but ideally I'd like to explore purely device-based options first. Where should I start?

Android :: Chaning Coding Style Due To GC Performance?

Apr 7, 2010

I keep hearing that Android applications should try to limit the number of objects created in order to reduce the workload on the garbage collector. It makes sense that you may not want to created massive numbers of objects to track on a limited memory footprint, for example on a traditional server application created 100,000 objects within a few seconds would not be unheard of.

The problem is how far should I take this? I've seen tons of examples of Android applications relying on static state in order supposedly "speed things up". Does increasing the number of instances that need to be garbage collected from dozens to hundreds really make that big of a difference? I can imagine changing my coding style to now created hundreds of thousands of objects like you might have on a full-blown Java-EE server but relying on a bunch of static state to (supposedly) reduce the number of objects to be garbage collected seems odd.

How much is it really necessary to change your coding style in order to create performance Android apps?

Android :: OpenGL Coding - Emulator Doesn't Work

May 26, 2009

After spending the better half of this day getting my HTC Magic to work in developer mode, I've now found that some of my frist openGL coding attempts that appeared to work fine in the emulator doesn't work as expected on the device. I've narrowed this down to glColorf(r, g, b, a) not working as expected on the device itself. The provided OpenGL samples do work though. So for example, after modifying Cube.java from the samples to the below code I find that I get the expected grey square on the emulator but a blank white screen (background fill colour) on the device.

class Cube { public Cube() { int one = 0x10000; int vertices[] = { -one, -one, -one, one, one, -one, one, one, };
// Buffers to be passed to gl*Pointer() functions // must be direct, i.e., they must be placed on the // native heap where the garbage collector cannot // move them. // // Buffers with multi-byte datatypes (e.g., short, int, float) // must have their byte order set to native order
ByteBuffer vbb = ByteBuffer.allocateDirect(vertices.length*4); vbb.order(ByteOrder.nativeOrder()); mVertexBuffer = vbb.asIntBuffer(); mVertexBuffer.put(vertices); mVertexBuffer.position(0); }
public void draw(GL10 gl) { gl.glFrontFace(GL10.GL_CW); gl.glVertexPointer(2, gl.GL_FIXED, 0, mVertexBuffer); gl.glColor4f(0.5f, 0.5f, 0.5f, 0.5f); gl.glDrawArrays(GL10.GL_TRIANGLE_STRIP, 0, 4); }
private IntBuffer mVertexBuffer;

Id like to know about performance pros and cons and functionality.The type of programming I intend to dive into : Android Dev, Web Dev, Desktop Dev...More Android and Web right now though. I do web designing as well, so dreamweaver is added as an "essential". But im sure I can do dreamweaver files and upload them to the server after programming in Linux...Right? And any info on IDE's in Linux for the above mentioned are appreciated, but i would prefer going the coding route and understanding the essence of whats happening "under the covers".

Android :: Eclipse Debug Issues While Coding Phone Applications

Sep 27, 2010

I have an application I am writing for Android that basically does a screen scrape of a large table on the web and presents it in a nicer way on the handset. Its 500k of html and takes about 20 seconds or so normally.

When I have my phone hooked up to the computer, I used to be able to just click on "Run" and my code would execute similiarly speedy, as opposed to Debug where it would take 10 minutes to complete.

Now, however, clicking "run" behaves just like debug mode.... I don't want this overhead, how do I get eclipse to stop sending my app to the debugger already? I have searched online and found a couple people with the same issue, but simply rebooting my phone doesn't fix it, and there have been no other solutions posted that I have found.

Android :: Decoding Encoded Audio Data On Android Without Playing It

Feb 25, 2010

Short version: What is the best way to get data encoded in an MP3 (and ideally in an AAC/Ogg/WMA) into a Java array or ByteBuffer that I can then manipulate?I'm putting together a program that has slowing down and speeding up sound files as one of its features. This works fine for WAV files,which are a header plus the exact binary data that needs to be sent to the speaker, and now I need to implement it for MP3 (ideally, this would also support AAC, Ogg, and WMA, but since those are less popular formats this is not required). Android does not expose an interface to decode the MP3 without playing it, so I need to create that
interface.

Also installed the "Default App Manager" to check for the default video player. However, it indicates no defaults to play any videos (either from file or streaming videos).
