General :: Getting Email Contacts Over To New Android Device?
Apr 18, 2013
Just order my first Android device my main concern is about getting my Email contacts over to my new device. So when you start adding Email accounts like Live or Hotmail or Yahoo for example once you add those Email accounts will it pull in my contacts that go along with my Email Accounts?

I have just bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 - very nice looking device - to replace my old and clunky Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. And I want to transfer all my phone contacts across. On my Xperia, I've got "Phone contacts", and gmail contacts. I tried to import all my phone contacts by first exporting them to a simgle file, and transferring that file to the Samsung. And now I've got this vast list containing, it seems, everybody who I've ever called or emailed, including various names who I don't recognize at all. Is there any way (maybe a specialized app) of keeping my phone contacts and gmail contacts separate? And how do I manage my vast list of contacts?

How do I go about emailing all contacts within either the default contacts app or Gmail?
As it's a phone/tablet, the browser version of Gmail (Desktop) often crashs and isn't suitable for contacts work - is there a way to do it otherwise?

My current device is a BlackBerry 9930 that's going to be retired later today when I get the Samsung Galaxy S4. It's no longer available, but I've been using the old BlackBerry Desktop Manager software that includes a Redirector program that runs on the work computer to send/receive work e-mails on my phone. This avoids the whole IT lockdown on my own personal phone while giving me the only thing I need, which is e-mail access. Is there something similar in the Android community?
If not, would IT have control over my device if I were to add the e-mail account to my device? Something I'd like to avoid as it's my personal phone...

moving contacts from one android device to another, or from an iPhone to an android (or viceversa)!!
This is my scenario: I've got my android tablet (the asus transformer) and I have 3 accounts set up there, 2 are gmail accounts (say, account A and account B) and a third corporate account (exchange activesync, call it account C)
I used account B when I was in my last job and have a lot of business contacts there. What I want to do is to have a simple way of copying some of these business contacts over to the exchange account (account C). I also would like to copy a couple from account A (personal stuff) into account C.

I have some questions concerning importing contacts to the device, which is extremely slow.
First of all, if you delete all your contacts, google sync will restore it very quickly. However, when my app is adding contacts to the device, it's very slow (a few contacts per second). Even if I add almost empty contacts (with name only), it is a time-consuming process.
If I turn google sync off, importing 5000 contacts can take 1-2 hours (on HTC Magic). When google sync is on it can take up to 24hours. And this happens despite the fact, that application for the whole time is in the foreground, device is connected to charger and screen is on. I checked the logcat to make sure my app is adding the contacts the whole time, and it is.
I tried different methods and different devices. The results differ of course, yet manually adding contacts is always significantly slower that google sync. Is there any way that I can speed up the process? So that importing 5000 contacts will take less than an hour.

When I use gmail (version 2.3.6), I can't send the same email to multiple contacts at the same time. I have no way to access my contacts (people) and choose more than one contact without having to keep adding one contact at a time. I want to be able to choose several contacts and add them at the same time. Gmail support said click on the gmail icon in the upper left hand corner, but there is none. What do I need to do?

I sync my contacts w/Google Contacts and am running Jellybean 4.2.1 on the Nexus 4. My issue is a husband and wife I know share the same email address but have different cell #s. Android refuses to show the wife in my contact list as long as she shares the same email address with the husband. If I remove the email address for the wife, she shows up in my contact list. The moment I add it back, on the next sync, she disappears from the contact list.
Questions:
1. Is there any way to stop android from marking a contact as a duplicate if the cell # differs but the email is the same?
2. Is there anyway to override the duplicate detection for a specific contact?

I am very new to Android (using non-rooted LG Nexus 5) and am having a great problem finding a feature that I depended on regularly with my Blackberry.
I occasionally receive an email from an automated server that indicates an emergency with one of the systems I manage. In Blackberry, I had setup a custom notification based on the email source address, and it would play a custom ringtone (Star Trek Red Alert) at top volume whenever a email from that contact was received. Android only allows custom "ringtones" on a per-contact basis, but these ringtones are only used for phone calls. There is no similar setting for SMS/MMS or Email messages that I can find on Android. I think it is strange that it is not part of the base functionality -- I am beginning to suspect it is a patent issue and it never will be added.
I can't find a good third-party application to provide this additional feature for email.I have tried several and found none adequate (for example, they fail with "Unfortunately has stopped.", they create separate connections to email servers and suck the battery dry, or they are built for SMS/MMS only).

I have been a Blackberry user for years, and finally ditched my old berry friend, for a Galaxy Nexus. Thus far, I have had to Google how to's for everything I've wanted to customize: ie ringtones, changing default tones, even the colour of my sms window. I've been able to figure everything out, but am stuck on creating custom tones for emails from specific contacts. With my trusted berry, custom tones for email and sms were linked together for my contacts. So whether I received a txt, or an email from "John", I would hear the specific tone I'd set for him. With my Nexus, I've learned the same is not true. I can only customize contact sounds for sms (and of course, only with an App, I really like Ringo btw). Emails, not so much. They all come in under the one tone, regardless of who it was from.

My boyfriend has two email accounts on his phone. He wants to backup his personal contacts to his personal account and his more important contacts to his other account. When he tried to do this it doubled the contacts on his phone. (Basically went from 50 contacts to 100 contacts).
Is there any possible way of doing this?

Basically I just want to have an app which opens the Contact associated with that e-mail when someone taps on an e-mail address.I know this would overwrite the function of Compose (if it is already selected), so the best option would be for this app to give two option.
Tap on email (in email to, sender, email body, or website, etc..)Window pops up and has two options
-- CONTACTS
when Contact selected, it opens the contact in View mode so we can see contact details.
-- COMPOSE
when Compose is selected, it opens list of e-mail apps (OR if a default is selected already, runs that app)

Is it normal for push email to take 3-4 minutes on an android device? I just sent some test emails from my laptop. They arrived at 6:33 pm and the timestamps show the were sent at 6:29. Maybe I'm just spoiled from having a blackberry because I'm used to push email being immediate, not 3-4 minutes later. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I've got a boat load of contacts I need to move over to the EVO, can it be done relatively seamless by data cable/software...or am I stuck with a manual transfer of each contact?

I currently have the Palm Pre and I am getting an EVO on Friday. I was wondering if anyone can give me any suggestions on an easy way to get my contacts from the Pre to the Evo, without me having to enter in all 115 of them? Would it be practical to enter them all into my Gmail account? if so, will the EVo download all of them from the cloud? What about BlueTooth? will the Pre shoot all of my contacts to the EVO via bluetooth Lastly, desktop software: IS there some software that will allow the pre to sync my contacts to Outlook? And will the Evo retrieve that info from outlook?

I want to use my iPod as my media player but I'd like to be able to control music from my Nexus (only basic controls).
Is there an app on either device that allows this? I know tsk skipping can be done by some Bluetooth headphones so I'm hoping there's a way to make iOS accept command from my Nexus
