General :: Botched System File Permissions - Phone Stuck In Rebooting
Apr 13, 2013
I was following the directions of this thread trying to install notifications toggles to my phone. Used root explorer. However, l changed the permissions on the wrong file or folder, it seems, as the phone just displays the logo and reboots, caught in a loop.
What files and folders has to have which permissions? How can I change them if I can't boot my phone? I don't have any mod other than Root, as this was the first I was trying to use, as I have to have better access to the toggles.

I can't copy the file 'hosts' back to system/etc. after I cut it out of the folder a couple mins ago. When I use ES File Explorer (don't wanna pay 4euros for Root Explorer..) to try and paste it back (with everything set to RW and having root permissions) it says 'permission denied'. I don't know what I'm doing wrong..

All of today my Samsung Galaxy Discover wouldn't turn on. Nothing. Black screen, no lights, no sounds, no vibrations - nothing. I left it all of today to see if it would get any better, but it didn't, so I took the battery out and put it back in. Now it keeps rebooting itself over and over again, and every time it boots to "Android System Recovery <3e>". I've tried a few of the options but nothing is working, it just keeps booting over and over again to that screen. How do I get it to boot to my actual phone, normally?

Yesterday i flashed the latest PAC-MAN ROM (http:[url]... on my SGS+. Then i wiped Cache and Dalvik Cache. I rebooted, and then came the problem: at the "Samsung Galaxy S Plus GT I9001 with cyanogen(mod)" screen. There it stucks, and after around 5 minutes it starts again rebooting and hangs at the same point. I am using CWM Recovery v6.0.1.0.

I am trying to sync a rostering app between two devices using dropsync. The .db files that need syncing are in the /data/ data/com/databases directory. Using Root explorer I can change the permissions to give full rw permission to others. The two .db files will then upload to the dropsync server.The problem is that whenever the app is opened and anything modified, the permissions change back to default and thus dropsync can't access the modified .db... Is there anyway to change this or am I wasting my time? what is the 'sticky' box option in RE?

I am trying to make my first custom ROM, but I have a problem with permissions.. this is my updater-script:
Code:
ui_print(" ");
ui_print("________________________________");
ui_print(" MADE BY FECHE ");
[Code]..
But when I press on reboot on recovery, it says that the ROOT may have been lost, then it says, repair root? I press on 'no', the device restarts but it gets a black screen right after the device logo..

how to find permissions a given application has. Each app is run as a certain user, so wouldn't finding the file permissions of an app be the same as finding the file permissions of a user? On Linux/Unix there is the find command but I don't know of any alternative command that is available on android. I am running KitKat 4.4.2 kernal 3.40-gadb2201.

Please help if you can. I just flashed a new kernel for NexBeast. I had been running the 800Mhz one that Fabolous has posted on his thread and I decided to try a faster one to see how my phone responds. I'm copied the zip to my SD card and used ROM Manager to install it. I didn't wipe data/cache since I'm only installing a kernel. I also didn't do a backup because I just did one yesterday prior to loading a custom boot animation. ROM Manager did its thing and then the phone went to reboot, but I get stuck on the Motorola "M" and never get to the boot animation. The "M" will be on the screen for about 30 seconds and then will disappear for a moment only to return. I let it go for about 10 minutes hoping it was just stuck in a short loop, but it never stopped. I pulled the battery and tried again, but I'm still having the same problem. What can I do here? I'm new to rooting, so I'm stuck. I'm not too familiar with ClockworkMod Recovery, so I'm lost. I know that when I was still using SPRecovery I was able to boot into recovery while holding "X" and then I could access my backups from there, but I tried that and I'm not seeing any of my backups I made using ROM manager.

My Droid keeps rebooting on it's own. It stuck in a boot loop. I have tried to do a wipe and restore a android backup that I made last week but it is still rebooting. As soon as the phone tries to mount the SD card reboots. I have also tried to restore it to a plain vanilla backup that I made right after I rooted my phone.
Clockwork see the SD card with no problems and can read and write to it. Also Win 7 can see the card when I put it in my laptop. This seems to have started after I used MotoTorch Flashlight and had to do a battery pull on it because the phone locked up.

So I'm relatively new to rooting. I'm running BB .4, and that went okay. I'm trying to install a theme using ROM Manager. I backup and wipe and it loads into recovery and all that. That runs okay. Then, when it's rebooting, it gets stuck on the DROID screen. Well,actually, it does it once, goes to the Droid eye, and then just repeats the DROID screen over and over. A battery pull allows me to get back into recovery, which lets me restore my back up and then it boots just fine, but I'd really like to make my phone purple. Any ideas?

I just unrooted and installed the leaked radio update so i would have less bugs with the froyo ROMS.
I installed the radio perfectly fine, but now unrevoked isn't working for me. I deleted all of the previous files and reinstalled them (sdk folder, usb drivers, reflash)
when i run the reflash tool, it gets stuck after rebooting, says "waiting for reboot..."
As the phone rebooted, it changed to "Flashing recovery image. Do not touch your phone!" but instead of into recovery, it just continued to restart the phone as usual

I understand that userland apps on android cannot set the system clock. Wanting to know more about how the security mechanism is set up for the system I did some digging around in the source code.
/dev/alarm is opened R/W to set the system clock using SystemClock.setCurrentTimeMillis.
How the permissions work to determine whether or not an application has permission to set the clock.
I assume it's just a user level permission, and the write bit for /dev/ alarm is only enabled for the "system user" and not the "userland user" applications run under.

I've noticed a troubling issue with app permissions. It seems that after installing, some apps that didn't ask for these two permissions:
Storage: modify/delete SD card contents
Phone calls: read phone state and identity
will magically acquire them after install! These apps do not ask for these permissions during install, nor do their Market pages disclose that they need them. After looking through many logcat messages during an install, I found this:
04-07 03:23:08.973,I,PackageParser,1016,com.some.app.nam e.here: compat added android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE android.permission.READ_PHONE_STATE
Digging around, I found this online:
Android permissions: Phone Calls: read phone state and identity - Stack Overflow. It seems that an app that is compatible with systems earlier than 1.6 will automatically be assigned those two permissions. If a developer is willing to make their app compatible only with 1.6+ systems, they can change their app's manifest:
<uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="4" android:targetSdkVersion="4" />
and when users on 1.6+ devices install the app, those two extra permissions won't show up.
I bet a lot of app developers don't know this, and therefore their apps will seems to acquire those two permissions magically. Users will install those apps, see the two extra permissions when they inspect the app security setting and be very puzzled. They'll probably think the app is malware and uninstall it. I've contacted some app developer about this issue, so that they can (hopefully) fix their app so it doesn't look like malware. Unfortunately, until all legit apps are fixed, it'll be hard to distinguish amongst apps that have those permissions, which app actually needs those permissions, which apps need fixing, and which apps are malware.

I'm trying to re-partition an SDCard on Android, with root access. What I'm trying to do is resize the 5.9GB partition into 3GB, and then make an EXT partition with the remaining space. I can think of two ways to do this, but I'm a bit stumped in doing either of them: 1) Cross-compile GNU parted, and run it on Android to modify the filesystem in place. This would be my preferred method, but I've been trying to statically compile parted using scratchbox and haven't had much luck, and I haven't been able to dynamically compile for Android in scratchbox either. 2) Directly modify the 512 byte MBR using some utility on my computer, and then dd the file on Android. I have a tool to view the MBR (mbrwiz), but I don't know how to edit it. Does anybody have any suggestions for either, or possibly a third route?

The permissions say that you must agree to allow them to delete files from your storage including your SD card; must agree to allow them to extract any information from your phone, etc. In other words they can do any thing they want with your phone and the data in it.
Is there any way to not grant these permissions and still get updates?

Is there some sort of log file that will show phone activity? I don't have a password lock on my phone and don't need one, but I suspect someone is using my phone while I'm sleeping. Is there a log that might show events such as someone unlocking the screen and viewing my calls or other applications?
