General :: App For Managing Background Data Efficiently?

Apr 15, 2012

I'm looking for an App which allows efficient control of the 'Restrict background data' checkbox on a per-App Basis.

In ICS today I can navigate
Settings -> Data Usage -> "someAPP"

And then check/uncheck the 'Restrict background data' checkbox to make the data traffic explicit for me: If I don't use "someAPP" I can expect that there is no background data traffic generated by "someAPP" (no extra cost in roaming mode).

I do have some apps (e.g. a pushmail app for company mails) which I always want to allow the use of background data in order to get my mail.

Other's (e.g. use of gmail, G+, etc.) I want to toggle the behaviour very quickly:

If I'm in 'roaming' mode: disable, if in my home-network with flat cost: enable.

This is the reason I can't use the 'Mobile Data' switch.

Today I navigate as shown above, which is cumbersome and likely to be incomplete. I think of an app, where you can compose a list of apps (from the installed ones) and enable/disable 'restrict background data' for apps on this list with one click.

Android :: Managing Background Uploads

Oct 21, 2009

In our app we're doing background photo uploads. The current implementation works using a combination of a Service and an AsyncTask. The former will trigger the latter, which will do the actual network I/O.

My question is: since the user can trigger many uploads in parallel, is this the correct implementation pattern? The problem is that I can never call Service.stopSelf() from an upload task when it finishes, because those tasks don't know anything about each other or the service that triggered them (because of the very nature of AsyncTask).

Do I even need a Service here at all? I always thought services were meant for long running background tasks, but their documentation clearly states that one must execute blocking operations in a separate thread. What's the purpose of Services then? You could just fork an AsyncTask from an Activity, it would make no difference at all.

Android :: Acitivity Managing - Always Starts New Instance Of Activity And Fetch Data From DB

Nov 17, 2010

I have been in problem of the Activity life-cycle. All though i read lots of docs on it put on getting clear picture on it. I have Activity A. In that activity I have menu options. If we click any option it opens the respective activity like if i click on 2nd button it opens Activity B Now again Activity B has same options into it. When user clicks on 1st button then i need to go back to activity A. So using this. Intent intent = new Intent().setClass(context, Articles.class); startActivity(intent); So always it starts new instance of activity and fetch data from DB. I want something like Activity A can be resumed back as it was.

General :: Auto Restrict Background Data And Disable Auto-sync When Mobile Data Enabled

Aug 24, 2013

I'm trying to limit my mobile data usage with out jumping through hoops.

I'm looking for a widget, that with one click of a button, it can restrict background data, disable auto-sync and enable mobile data, and when pressed again, enable WiFi, disable background restriction and enable auto-sync.

This function, no matter how trivial, would save time and effort.

Is there anything like this out there? Would something like this require root?

General :: How To Turn Off BACKGROUND DATA On ICS And JB

Oct 27, 2013

Any reliable way to turn off Background Data on ICS and JB?

My LG G2X is running CM7 (but beautifully skinned for ICS!) and turning off Background Data gives me a 30% improvement in battery life and eliminates most of those annoying status bar advertisements. I really REALLY don't like the privacy vulnerability of my phone checking in with Google Play in the background. For example, occasionally when I check Google Play, my desktop icon for Bing suddenly "disappears" (gasp!)

Meanwhile my Galaxy Tab is running JB and maintains a constant connection with Play. I get regular notifications demanding that I update my apps. And guess what - on my Galaxy Tab my desktop icon for Bing sometimes disappears on it's own! :P

There is an option to restrict background data, but you need to set a data limit, you get an annoying alert in the status bar - and it doesn't work (restrict <> disable)!

I sync nothing with Google and want my privacy.

HTC Incredible :: Background Data Vs Always On Mobile Data - What's Difference?

May 4, 2010

What is the difference between these two:Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Enable always-on mobile data
- Description: "Uses more power on some mobile networks"
- Message after disabling: "Attention: Disabling always on mobile data may cause connectivity problems in some applications. Please use the manual refresh feature in applications to update online data" Settings > Accounts & sync > Background data
- Seems to be the same as the 4th toggle in the Power Control widget
- Description: "Applications can sync, send, and receive data at any time"
- Message after disabling: "Attention: Disabling background data extends battery life and lowers data use. Some applications may still use the background data connection.".Disabling either one seems to extend battery life. I haven't figured our yet how they differentially affect push email, etc. Would someone kindly explain to me how these settings are different?

Android :: SQL Efficiently Check - An Association Exists

Nov 5, 2010

I have a database of notes and lists, with three association tables.
Basically, lists are parents of notes and other lists, and notes can be parents of other notes in a outline like hierarchy.

I am using this query to return all notes within a list as well as the number of subnotes each note has.

CODE:...................

This query works just fine, but it's overkill. I don't need to return count(n2.note_id) as Num_Subnotes because I'm only using that value to check if the note has ANY SUBNOTES AT ALL. Essentially it's a boolean value where 0 is false and > 0 is true.

It seems to me that counting all those records is a waste of time when I could just return 1 after finding the first matching value.

Is there a more efficient way to check if count(n2.note_id)>0 in the above query?

General :: Syncing And Managing Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 In Education?

Jan 28, 2013

I am a teacher and we have just bought 15 SG Tab 2 10.1 for my class running 4.1.1. It is a right pain downloading an app every time I want to use one and I am either having to ask the children to download the app to each tab individually or go into play store on PC where I can select each tab individually and send the app. Neither of these are ideal and I'm looking for a way of managing and sending an app to all the tabs in one go.

This seems to work with iOS as when I download an app or take a pic on my iphone it appears instantly on my ipad via iCloud so there must be a way of doing this but I'm a bit stuck.

General :: Samsung Galaxy S3 - Managing Hidden Files Thumbnails?

Jan 5, 2014

So I know the method of hiding a file or folder by placing a period in the beginning of the title then SETTINGS > *Uncheck* SHOW HIDDEN FILES

Okay, to make everything clear...... from the home page I go to my Apps......click FILES, then there are the following items: ALL FILES, IMAGES, VIDEOS, MUSIC, DOCUMENTS.

When I click IMAGES....I get to my CAMERA, a generic PHOTO album, and some downloads from FACEBOOK. There are also two hidden files called .THUMBNAIL and .THUMBNAILS2 (I may have named one of them I'm not sure).

What are these files for? They contain literally thousands of previous and current pictures I had stored in my phone including deleted pics. They are lower resolution than normal too. I want to delete the ".thumbnail" folders but I don't know what will happen. They're annoying me and include a lot of deleted stuff.

I know this is one of the "tips" for battery life but what all does it affect (i.e. when does it need to be on to perform a function)? Is that correct, or does it just affect the market?

Android :: Background App Downloading Much Data While Idle

Jun 10, 2010

Luckily I have the "NetCounter" network traffic counter installed, so I monitor my data usage over the 3g/2g network. Recently I've discovered my usage have increased massively. According to the month graph I've jumped from average 8 MB/day to approx 40 MB/day and my habbits haven't changed!This morning when I woke up, and my phone has been idle all night, it had already used 7MB since midnight - without me using it. What kind of a background app/service downloads that much data? According to my netcounter it is almost 99% download and 1% upload.I have a 1gb/month dataplan which should be enough, but something is appearently abusing my Connection , and with 410MB used this month so far, it can't last all month this way.I can see which date more or less the cell usage have increased, but I honestly can't recall which programs I have installed around that point! So before I try randomly uninstalling programs, I would like to hear if there is any way I can see how the network usage is distributed between the apps, so I can find the sinners?

Android :: Android Platform - Efficiently Sending Protocol Buffer Messages With Http

Mar 16, 2010

I'm trying to send messages generated by Google Protocol Buffer code via a simple HTTP scheme to a server. What I have currently have implemented is here (forgive the obvious incompletion):
HttpClient client = new DefaultHttpClient();
String url = "http://192.168.1.69:8888/sdroidmarshal";
HttpPost postRequest = new HttpPost(url);
String proto = offers.build().toString();
List<NameValuePair> nameValuePairs = new ArrayList<NameValuePair>(1);
nameValuePairs.add(new BasicNameValuePair("sdroidmsg", proto));
postRequest.setEntity(new UrlEncodedFormEntity(nameValuePairs)); try { ResponseHandler<String> responseHandler = new BasicResponseHandler(); String responseBody = client.execute(postRequest, responseHandler);} catch (Throwable t) { }I'm not that experienced with communications over the internet and no more so with HTTP - while I do understand the basics... So my question, before I blindly develop the rest of the application around this, is whether or not this is particularly efficient? I ideally would like to keep messages small and I assume toString() adds some unnecessary formatting.
