HTC Incredible :: Background Data Vs Always On Mobile Data - What's Difference?
May 4, 2010
What is the difference between these two:Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Enable always-on mobile data
- Description: "Uses more power on some mobile networks"
- Message after disabling: "Attention: Disabling always on mobile data may cause connectivity problems in some applications. Please use the manual refresh feature in applications to update online data" Settings > Accounts & sync > Background data
- Seems to be the same as the 4th toggle in the Power Control widget
- Description: "Applications can sync, send, and receive data at any time"
- Message after disabling: "Attention: Disabling background data extends battery life and lowers data use. Some applications may still use the background data connection.".Disabling either one seems to extend battery life. I haven't figured our yet how they differentially affect push email, etc. Would someone kindly explain to me how these settings are different?

In android 4.0 and above there is the option in the data usage settings, to turn mobile data on and off. What difference does it exactly make? As fas as I tested, I still can take a look at my mobile data usage, even though it is tuned off in the data usage settings.
According to this source of Google
[URL]
turning it off means:
Quote:
If it's off, you won't be able to use mobile data at all and many features of your phone and apps won't work correctly.
what they mean by "...use mobile data at all..." (since I still have 3G) and what features there could be?

If "always on mobile data" is disabled, will this have any affect on programs that are set to auto sync with back ground data enabled(Face book, twitter etc)? I'm trying to work it out but lots of people say different things?

I'm trying to limit my mobile data usage with out jumping through hoops.
I'm looking for a widget, that with one click of a button, it can restrict background data, disable auto-sync and enable mobile data, and when pressed again, enable WiFi, disable background restriction and enable auto-sync.
This function, no matter how trivial, would save time and effort.
Is there anything like this out there? Would something like this require root?

So after reading some other questions on here, I'm still kind of confused about the point of buying the $45 vs. the $30 data plan. What's the benefit of the more expensive one? From what I had understood in the past is that the $45 is if you want your exchange account pushed and synced, which I thought implied that you did not get those exchange features on the $30 plan. One of the big needs I have is that I can get my college e-mails, on an exchange server, pushed/synced to/on my phone.

Can anyone help explain what this does? I did a small search around the internet, and it came up with just about nothing.My first question is: I turned mobile data off, and yet, during the night, I was charged for data, so something leaked.Personally, I thought if this was because of this particular function. But maybe it was something else.So, I turned it off, but around the forums for other androids people seem to think that syncing doesn't work as well with this disabled.Does anybody know what might have happened? And could this function have been the thing that caused the leak.The leak, was actually for only 50 KB or so, but because I'm on Page Plus, it caused me to go under the required balance to refill of $29.95 and caused my plan to lapse. It's important for me for this not to happen again. Can anyone give any tips?

My eris has always has pretty alright battery life, what I would expect out of a smartphone, if unplugged at 9AM it usually was running on its last leg around midnight. I've had it for over 5 months now, I've always had it activated on alltel, I installed the 2.1v3 leak before the official OTA was out and just lately it seems like there something very wrong with my battery life...
If I unplug my phone at 9AM within the past week and occasionaly check and respond to a text message, my battery had been down to almost 30% by NOON... what?..
I have noticed that if I disable Mobile Network (3g/1x data), the thing lasts all day and some... If I turn mobile network ON, I can't see that I have any network traffic or any apps running in the background that are syncing data at all... I've had google account sync mess up on me before and have to reset my google account because it gets stuck in a syncing loop, but its not doing that, already checked. Very weird.
Anyone thing it could be something wrong in my ##PROGRAM#/##778# provisioning menu, maybe something got changed?.. Maybe it could be do to Alltel's AT&T merger that's happening right now, maybe some 3G tower's radios are turned off or something...

If you have an original unedited APN for the Incredible, please post it. I believe the app Quick Settings added the [disabled] to the APN file when I attempted to use the Mobile Data Switch. See below. Now Quick Settings Says "No APN Configured". I've emailed the dev. If so, I will remove the [disabled] to restore the file to its original state. Everything seemed to be working fine despite the [disabled] setting though, but I didn't test MMS. Current (modified by Quick Settings?) APN File from my Verizon HTC Droid Incredible:
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' standalone='yes' ?>
<apns>
<apn name="Production" numeric="00000" mcc="000" mnc="00" apn="1[disabled]" user="null"
server="null" password="null" proxy="null" port="null" mmsproxy="null" mmsport="null"
mmsprotocol="2.0" mmsc="http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms" type="mms[disabled]" />
</apns>
I used APN Backup & Restore to save the file to the SDCard so I could view and edit the file using a text editor (such as notepad) in windows. You can get APN Backup & Restore on the market for free.

Ok, so I've been trying out Tasker for a day or so and loving it. Here's what I want to do: When @ home, make my wifi switch on and mobile data switch off. Anyone know how to do that? It says the mobile data switch in the app won't work for CDMA networks (requires APNdroid).
Is there anyway to tap into the widget that HTC has on our phones because that switch seems to work just fine to turn the data off. I simply want Tasker to do it automatically based on a location Context.

I'm making an Android Java app game (although this question applies to all languages really) and hope to release the first version soon. I'm nervous about how I save data in my game. My problem is that, if in a later update, I decide to store more data or store the same data in a different way, I need to be careful I don't lose or corrupt data for users that upgrade (i.e. I want users to be able to use data created by an old version in the new version, like their high scores from before).For example, say I want to save high scores in version 1.

I know this is one of the "tips" for battery life but what all does it affect (i.e. when does it need to be on to perform a function)? I tried it once and noticed I had to turn it back on to access the market, so I assumed that it would prevent ALL data like that, including web browsing and possibly mail. Is that correct, or does it just affect the market?

As everyone knows, turning 'background data' off saves a huge amount of power. My question is though, what does background data actually mean? I know market 'requires' it, and Qik seems to break if it's turned off. However, I have an app called SMSBackup which uploads your texts to Gmail as you send/receive them. It seems to work even though background data is switched off. How is this? Could someone tweak/re-write the market to not use background data?

So we all know that turning off background data is a massive battery saver. What I want to know is WHY? As in, what apps are doing what and when to use so much data. What app can I use to log this kind of data usage?

Any reliable way to turn off Background Data on ICS and JB?
My LG G2X is running CM7 (but beautifully skinned for ICS!) and turning off Background Data gives me a 30% improvement in battery life and eliminates most of those annoying status bar advertisements. I really REALLY don't like the privacy vulnerability of my phone checking in with Google Play in the background. For example, occasionally when I check Google Play, my desktop icon for Bing suddenly "disappears" (gasp!)
Meanwhile my Galaxy Tab is running JB and maintains a constant connection with Play. I get regular notifications demanding that I update my apps. And guess what - on my Galaxy Tab my desktop icon for Bing sometimes disappears on it's own! :P
There is an option to restrict background data, but you need to set a data limit, you get an annoying alert in the status bar - and it doesn't work (restrict <> disable)!
I sync nothing with Google and want my privacy.

i seem to be having battery life problems because of mobile data, it sis constantly on because of the apps that use the internet while in the background. Therefore my phone is constantly using 3G and wastes heaps of battery. how to restrict background data so no apps will be using the mobile data? don't tell me to use task killer because task killers constantly use data as well and if u kill an app, it just comes back.

New Samsung Moment owner here. I am coming from a Blackberry, and would like to receive my email as it comes. I've learned through the forums that turning off Background Data on the Momemt saves battery life. I've done that. I've also left the Auto Sync button checked (Gmail, Calendar, Contacts). However, my email never comes unless I physically go into Gmail and press refresh. I don't get it. While I love the many features of this phone, I am really missing my Blackeberry . Any suggestions, or is this just the way it is?

Luckily I have the "NetCounter" network traffic counter installed, so I monitor my data usage over the 3g/2g network. Recently I've discovered my usage have increased massively. According to the month graph I've jumped from average 8 MB/day to approx 40 MB/day and my habbits haven't changed!This morning when I woke up, and my phone has been idle all night, it had already used 7MB since midnight - without me using it. What kind of a background app/service downloads that much data? According to my netcounter it is almost 99% download and 1% upload.I have a 1gb/month dataplan which should be enough, but something is appearently abusing my Connection , and with 410MB used this month so far, it can't last all month this way.I can see which date more or less the cell usage have increased, but I honestly can't recall which programs I have installed around that point! So before I try randomly uninstalling programs, I would like to hear if there is any way I can see how the network usage is distributed between the apps, so I can find the sinners?

I'm looking for an App which allows efficient control of the 'Restrict background data' checkbox on a per-App Basis.
In ICS today I can navigate
Settings -> Data Usage -> "someAPP"
And then check/uncheck the 'Restrict background data' checkbox to make the data traffic explicit for me: If I don't use "someAPP" I can expect that there is no background data traffic generated by "someAPP" (no extra cost in roaming mode).
I do have some apps (e.g. a pushmail app for company mails) which I always want to allow the use of background data in order to get my mail.
Other's (e.g. use of gmail, G+, etc.) I want to toggle the behaviour very quickly:
If I'm in 'roaming' mode: disable, if in my home-network with flat cost: enable.
This is the reason I can't use the 'Mobile Data' switch.
Today I navigate as shown above, which is cumbersome and likely to be incomplete. I think of an app, where you can compose a list of apps (from the installed ones) and enable/disable 'restrict background data' for apps on this list with one click.

I just recently bought a Motorola Droid, and I was pretty shocked at how quickly the battery ran out of juice. I looked around on the net and found a tip that said to turn off the Background Data option, so I did that, but I find this to be a very convenient feature. I'm just wondering if there's some sort of app or widget that will let me quickly toggle the Background Data option on and off for a quick sync to push all of my stuff in whenever I want it.

I was trying to go to hotmail.com earlier because I like the to look at all my folders. Normally I'm setting on Background Data off due to being at my work and saving as much battery as possible. I've always been able to go to the webpage there. I just turned on Background Data again since I'll be home for the weekend and tried to go to the webpage and it showed a lock on the address bar and wouldn't load. Why would turning on Background Data not allow me to go to the page? Could it be something else?

I use this widget to conveniently switch off these features to conserve battery life. Every switch seems to work fine except for the Background Data...I am able to turn on Background Data but when trying to turn off Background Data with the widget, although it does appear to be turned off because the icon is no longer illuminated...when I manually go into Data settings, the Background Data is still checked on.... What is the reason why it is not turning off with the widget

I am using a MOTO X with android 4.4.2. The android OS has high background data usage only in cellular connection. There is no such issue in WIFI connection. I hav turned off auto backup, deleted Google+ and turned off all the syncs. Even after restricting background data the android os keeps using mobile data. I have done the factory reset once but even that didn't solve the problem.
