Samsung I7500 :: What Does Background Data Actually Mean?

Nov 8, 2009

As everyone knows, turning 'background data' off saves a huge amount of power. My question is though, what does background data actually mean? I know market 'requires' it, and Qik seems to break if it's turned off. However, I have an app called SMSBackup which uploads your texts to Gmail as you send/receive them. It seems to work even though background data is switched off. How is this? Could someone tweak/re-write the market to not use background data?

Samsung I7500 :: Sync Google Apps Without Background Data

Dec 10, 2009

I'm wondering if anyone's experienced this. I'm using II5 firmware with Galaxo 1.1 None of my google apps seems to ever sync if I turn off background data. It'd be cool if there was a way to let it use background data only when the phone is unlocked, but whatever it's alright. So, fr gmail you can manually go in and chose to "Refresh", but for Calendar and Contacts there is no way to do this within the app.. Also, it never seems to sync even when you use it for a while.Has anyone found a way to sync calendar or contacts without turning on background data?

Samsung I7500 :: GPS Without Data Connection

Dec 17, 2009

I just bought my i7500 in the excitement that it has all the features that I need (except upgrade to 2.0 OS) but it seems that GPS chip doesn't work properly. From what I understand, GPS chip enables the phone to communicate with the GPS satellites and determine the location, without the need for data plan (EDGE, HSPA, or WiFi). However, on my galaxy, I have two apps (GPS Status, GPSTest) for GPS which suppose to show my location (long, lat) but I get nothing with these apps. How come? I have enabled the 'Enable GPS Satellites' and 'Use wireless networks' (even though this shouldn't be required) in Security and Location setting and still nothing. I see the little GPS icon the status bar at the top blinking but I believe it's suppose to stay there when it actually locates itself, which its clearly not doing. I have tried in various locations where the GPS signals are pretty good so I don't think reception is a problem. I have the i7500XXII4 baseband version.

Samsung Moment :: Background Data Off No Email?

Dec 8, 2009

New Samsung Moment owner here. I am coming from a Blackberry, and would like to receive my email as it comes. I've learned through the forums that turning off Background Data on the Momemt saves battery life. I've done that. I've also left the Auto Sync button checked (Gmail, Calendar, Contacts). However, my email never comes unless I physically go into Gmail and press refresh. I don't get it. While I love the many features of this phone, I am really missing my Blackeberry . Any suggestions, or is this just the way it is?

It's via work, and on a business tariff that boasts unlimited data. After a couple of huge bills, it turns out that apparently 3g data is unlimited, but 2g data is charged at the usual eye-watering rates. Phone Bloke is checking with O2 whether they are serious. In the meatime, I'd like to disable 2g data connections.I can't find a way to do that.

Samsung I7500 :: Data On Demand Application Allow To Save Battery

Oct 10, 2010

Ever since I got unlimited data plan my battery life reduced by 60%. Before I would charge my phone once in 3-4 days, with 3g on all the time I could barely go through one day.
"Data On Demand allows you to save battery by turning off your (2G/3G-) data connection manually or automatically if your device goes to standby-mode (display turns black)."
The best features of this prog is that when u put it on auto mode it will only disable 3G when ur phone goes to standby mode thus saving u a lot of battery.

Samsung Galaxy I7500 :: Getting 3g-data To Connect On Every Boot (APN Disappearing)

Oct 27, 2010

I think it's time I turn to the forums with this issue if I'm ever gonna get GAOSP fully working on my device.BEHAVIOR: The two latest Nightlys I've flashed have given me a 3g-symbol and working connection on either the first boot (without gapps installed) or the second, after installing gapps. The problem is that over consecutive reboots (to change themes, settings, just to try etc.) the 3g-data rarely returns. I have been rebooting the device for 20 times in a row without getting it to connect to 3g-data. Using the *#*#INFO#*#*-menu and "enable data connection" doesn't work. Changing to WCDMA-band only may help with frequency of working reboots, but it's hard to tell. Some times (on some combinations of ROM/baseband) switching airplane-mode on/off has worked.

OBSERVATIONS: What I have observed is happening is that whenever 3g-data isn't working, the APN-list i empty. If I create a new APN it will not show after I have pressed save. If I reboot until i get 3g-data again, the new APN will show up together with the original ones. I've had this problem occur with many different ROMs from what I can remember, but to vastly varying extents.

There seems to be some connection to baseband too, because even on galaxo 1.6.3.4 I've had lots of problem with anything newer than II5, or even newer than IH8 to be completely stable, until I used jakax 3g-fix: Fix 3G/UMTS network interruptions with donut and JC6 AMSS. Since then I have been using JC6 with Galaxo 1.6.3.4 and only losing 3g-data on 1 of 5 reboots or so. jakax's fix Isn't for this problem though, so I've no idea why it helps!?I've heard some others having similar problems, but most seem to have been solved in some update or they sold their devices or something, because no thread has come to any solution really. My device was one of the first and bought from Germany and is being used in Sweden, could this affect it it any way? I have seen some threads of problems with android APNs disappearing when certain MNC-numbers are entered, but I never found any explanation or solution there either.

Samsung I7500 :: Buying A Normal Voice / Data Vs Android Plan?

Sep 8, 2009

With all this talk about people buying the i7500 from Germany; I was wondering if T-mobile has any rules/detection against us using an android phone bought from outside, on the network using a normal voice+data plan like the $30+$10 plan. Because given the price difference of a 2 yr contract a new phone would in theory need to be over $560 before it is no longer worth buying outside. So what is the incentive of getting a simlocked phone, that costs more, and be locked into a 2 yr contract? I guess this applies to some of the other smartphones as well.

Samsung I7500 :: Samsung I7500 - Low Middle Or High-end Android Smartphone

Jan 23, 2010

The Samsung i7500 Galaxy is, except the support from Samsung itself, a great Android smartphone with a very good (the best?) price for value. It's with 11,9mm the second slimmest Android phone after Nexus One with 11,5mm (right?) and has unlike the HTC phones a flash light and build in storage of 8GB. On most sites the Galaxy is (one of) the cheapest Android phones, I wonder if it's because Samsung is cheaper or HTC/Motorola more expensive by itself?

I personally would compare the i7500 with the HTC Hero, although in my opinion the i7500 still has a much better price for value.

Is it even possible to define if and which Android phone is a low, middle, or high-end smartphone?
Sure, it also depends for what purposes you bought and use your phone, but I still wonder were the i7500 would be if 1=low and 10=high end Android phone, and if there even is a number 10? I also think that the D-Pad is a big plus and not a minus in comparison to the scroll ball from HTC.

HTC Incredible :: Background Data Vs Always On Mobile Data - What's Difference?

May 4, 2010

What is the difference between these two:Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Enable always-on mobile data
- Description: "Uses more power on some mobile networks"
- Message after disabling: "Attention: Disabling always on mobile data may cause connectivity problems in some applications. Please use the manual refresh feature in applications to update online data" Settings > Accounts & sync > Background data
- Seems to be the same as the 4th toggle in the Power Control widget
- Description: "Applications can sync, send, and receive data at any time"
- Message after disabling: "Attention: Disabling background data extends battery life and lowers data use. Some applications may still use the background data connection.".Disabling either one seems to extend battery life. I haven't figured our yet how they differentially affect push email, etc. Would someone kindly explain to me how these settings are different?

Samsung I7500 :: Confused Between I5700 & I7500

Mar 18, 2010

Sorry if this thread seems inconsequential but I have been rendering myselves sleepless nights over the past couple of days ( and nights ) due to my inability to choose between the above two said android phones. I like the i5700 for its zippy 800 MHz processor and that its got the 2.1 update. I like the i7500 for its 5 MP camera and flash + a larger screen to play with I would have gone in for the i7500 but have been hearing about Samsung deciding against not updating it to version 2.1 which can off course be done taking the un-official channel. Moreover the 528 Mhz processor is certainly lagging.

But still I see people in here Going after the i7500 .... Adding to it there is more threads and discussions going around on the i7500 as compared to the i5700. Am I missing something in the i7500 or is it just that i am a stupid newbie ... I have gone through many many pages of information on this thread before posting this query.

Is that correct, or does it just affect the market?

General :: How To Turn Off BACKGROUND DATA On ICS And JB

Oct 27, 2013

Any reliable way to turn off Background Data on ICS and JB?

My LG G2X is running CM7 (but beautifully skinned for ICS!) and turning off Background Data gives me a 30% improvement in battery life and eliminates most of those annoying status bar advertisements. I really REALLY don't like the privacy vulnerability of my phone checking in with Google Play in the background. For example, occasionally when I check Google Play, my desktop icon for Bing suddenly "disappears" (gasp!)

Meanwhile my Galaxy Tab is running JB and maintains a constant connection with Play. I get regular notifications demanding that I update my apps. And guess what - on my Galaxy Tab my desktop icon for Bing sometimes disappears on it's own! :P

There is an option to restrict background data, but you need to set a data limit, you get an annoying alert in the status bar - and it doesn't work (restrict <> disable)!

I sync nothing with Google and want my privacy.
