Android :: Not Using A WakeLock - Why Does The Device Stay Awake

Apr 13, 2010

I have a service which, when started, does some stuff (like downloading files) typically taking about 2-3 minutes.

If I start this service and then immediately use the power button to switch off the screen, then I would expect the phone, at some point, to fall asleep. But it never seems to fall asleep while the service is still doing its stuff. At least, not on my Nexus One.

I'm not using a wake lock (though I do use WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_KEEP_SCREEN_ON in the activity that monitors the service progress).

So is it true that I don't need to use a wake lock?

Motorola Droid X :: Is There Anyway To Force 3G To Stay On?

Aug 8, 2010

Every morning I listen to RadioTime on my way to work and it is constantly losing it's connection and then buffering for a while to reconnect. I can't figure out the problem because when it shuts off, all it takes to get it up and running again is to hit pause and then play. Judging from that I don't think it's an issue with where I'm at not having a 3G connection. If anyone knows a fix for this it would be much appreciated.I apologize if I didn't explain this very well, if you have any questions feel free to ask.

General :: Which Android Device To Stay In A Car For Radio Streaming

Jul 15, 2012

I'd like to install an Android device (tablet, smartphone, computer or whatever) into my car.

The purpose is to listen to internet radios and to be able to switch between those radios using my toyota car player which handles bluetooth/A2DP/avrcp .The app I would use is xiialive. This device would have his own sim card and should stay in the car. I don't want to plug the device each time I enter in my car, push any button or whatever. I would just like that the fact to put the key in my car would connect automatically to a webradio.

In fact I don't really need to see the screen, the device could stay hidden somewhere inside the car. Here are the features I would like :

- auto boot when I turn on the car, which means when the device receives power from the usb port (my car has an usb port)
- plug an external antenna to get a better reception while driving. I'm thinking of a small android computer with a 3G stick plugged in. I have a 3G stick with an external antenna slot. Or any smartphone with an external antenna slot, but I haven't found one so far.
- eventually auto power down when I turn off the car, but If the device shutdowns when the battery is empty, it could be ok too

General :: How To Force Samsung Galaxy GIO To Stay On 3G

Jul 5, 2012

I am using GIO as wireless access point for my notebook, but in 90 % of cases when I am calling someone or someone is calling me it automatically switches to 2G and of course dropping internet connection.

When using it as AP its always connected to charger.

There is no option in stock rom to make it stay at 3G , there is only option to force 2G.

Was trying to uncover "secret" menu using "any cut" application but no luck with it.

I am using stock 2.3.4 Android , was trying 2.3.6 but there is no option to force 3G either.

I saw there is such menu to force 3G on SGS2 / SGN but not on GIO

How can I force Samsung Galaxy GIO to stay on 3G while talking with someone ?

General :: Samsung Galaxy Note - How To Force Browser To Stay In Memory On ICS

Feb 27, 2012

For whatever reason every browser I try reloads tabs when I leave the browser. It's REALLY annoying - I'm stuck on edge most of the time, and finding out that my tabs suddenly reload just because I switched to twitter for a second.

I tried to pretty much disable the LMK, and it still did this...

I tried Chrome, Browser Plus, stock ICS browser, Dolphin and Opera (which does this slightly less often) Last time I had this problem was on my old tablet with only 256 MB of RAM. (Which still did this less often than the Note on ICS)

Every time this happened, I had at least 120 MB of ram free. Seriously, the note has a full gigabyte of ram, and yet this happens.

This doesn't happen to me on GB.

Is there anything I can do to make browsing normal again? Like, exclude a browser from getting killed, or something? I'm using a Galaxy Note..

Android :: Force Device Reboot After Update?

What is the best way to let my users perform an application update?

Is there any way to force device reboot after the update? I'm asking this because my application registers some behavior on boot.

Please note, the application would not be published in the Market.

Update:

My app will be preinstalled on a set of ~100 handsets. Should I periodically call a webservice that will inform the device about upgrade available, and then, redirect to an .apk file within a webkit view?

Android :: Awake Phone By Touching The Screen

Jan 4, 2010

I own an HTC Hero and the phone can only be awaken by pressing the menu button or the power off button. Dunno if it's like this for every Android phone. I'm looking for a way to awake the phone by touching the screen. My idea is to replace the KeyGuard with something else but instead of awaking the phone by pressing one of those buttons, I would like to do it by touching the screen. Is this even possible or the Androd framework doesn't provide this functionality at all?

HTC Incredible :: Android OS - Phone Always In Awake Mode

May 16, 2010

My phone is having the 100% Awake Time issue and I can't figure out why. I've uninstalled a few apps that I thought could be the problem, but that made no difference. I then changed to a completely empty screen layout to remove any possible widget issues, still the same. Last night I installed SystemPanel so I could get a better idea of what's going on and now I'm even more confused. It doesn't show a single thing that's eating up CPU time. Under Battery Use it shows Android System at 43%, then Cell Standby and WiFi at 14%. Is there something in the Android OS that is screwy?

I'm at a complete loss on how to continue trouble shooting this. I'd really rather avoid a complete reset of the phone, but if it's the only option I have. I'm going to go through and uninstall basically everything I can today to see if I can find the culprit, but any ideas would be great. If it was an app though, wouldn't I see it in SystemPanel? Here's some shots of my use this morning. I was using it a bit, but there's obvious spots where the phone should have stopped being "awake".

Android :: Do IM Apps Actually Stay Connected?

Jul 8, 2010

I'm upset, folks. After months of trying, I STILL cannot find a single instant messaging app for my HTC Eris (2.1) that will STAY CONNECTED.I primarily want to connect to MSN (Windows Live, whatever they call it now) as well as Yahoo and AIM, though if I could only get MSN to work I'd be satisfied. However all the apps I've tried (ALL OF THEM!) behave the same way. Each one will connect, and either not show me as online to the rest of the world (verified my by gf), show my friends as not being signed in (when they actually are), and randomly disconnect me and NEVER RECONNECT ME unless I manually bring up the app on the screen. It's as if the apps have no connection to the IM's servers, or reality itself.I have tried MSN Talk, Meebo, Ebuddy, Nimbuzz. Each one of these claims to automatically reconnect if there's a problem, but NONE of them ACTUALLY DO. No matter what, I drop off, I'm shown as "signed out" to the outside world, and the apps will only reconnect (or pretend to reconnect) when I manually bring the app to the screen.I would expect that any IM might disconnect if I went out of signal range and came back, however this happens even when the signal is strong and uninterrupted. And it NEVER reconnects if I leave the phone alone. ONLY if I manually bring the IM app up does it even go through the motions of a reconnect.I can try messaging people even when it looks like it's connected to the server(s), but over half the time, the messages don't make it, because it's not REALLY connected at all.Again, this is using ALL IM apps I've tried so far.I refuse to believe that Android has ZERO working IM apps available, so... is there one that actually works properly? Is there some setting or tweak that will "keep-alive" the connection? Is there a problem with my Eris? Or... are there really no working IM apps for Android?
