Android :: Switch From IPhone - Application Alternatives?
Mar 16, 2010
Current iphone 3gs user here. I'm thinking about picking up the N1 and selling the iPhone because of my general dislike for all things Apple, however, I tried out the Droid last year for 30 days and went back to my iPhone. I'm wondering if things have changed significantly in the Android world since then. I'm particularly interested in Android alternatives or flavors of the following iPhone applications:
kindle (kindle reader)
audible (audiobooks)
Jaadu RDP (remote desktop) <-- this one is a deal breaker for me
picasa photo application (uploading and administering albums)
dropbox
OrbI know this existed a few months ago but the implementation was awful. Has it improved?
Skype
Copy and Paste
I'd also be interested to know if the copy/paste functionality has improved at all. When I had my Droid, copy and pasting from the body of an email was almost impossible. You needed to hold down one of the tiny droid keyboard buttons and drag your finger across the screen to highlight the text. At that point if you highlighted the wrong text you were S.O.L because it immediately copied the text as soon as you raised your finger from the screen. Please, please, please, tell me this has been improved! I'd love to get away from my iPhone so that I can delete iTunes forever.

I really don't like the Gallery app. I'd prefer the photo gallery to be simpler and let me just flick through photos without any whizzy 3d effects. Is there a way to get the default Photos/Pictures app that some phones came with, or is there any good alternatives people would recommend?

I have been a smartphone user for years, pretty much since there have been smartphones, I have had one. From Nokia's on Symbian, Palm's, Blackberries, and others.
I got an iPhone 3G when they came out, and now my contract is over, and to be honest I am quite upset with Apple at the moment. Setting all the minor flaws with the iPhone 4 aside, Steve Jobs' pompous responses to people about the issues it has had, have made me feel basically like he thinks anyone who enjoys apple products will eat up any shit he wants to feed them, and I am not one of those people.
As such, being free from a contract with AT&T, I am seriously considering making the switch to Android, the only smartphone platform I have never used. That being said, in terms of what is available right now, the iPhone 4 is still quite the attractive option.
I have two big issues.
One, there are too many Android based phones to choose from, and they come out so rapidly getting locked into a 2 year contract on a phone I know very little about is a bit scary, and choosing one has become damn near impossible.
Two, again on the subject of the 2 year contract, if I switch I will likely land on Verizon, and I will be stuck on Verizon with an Android phone for 2 years, and if I dont like it, or if the iPhone 5,6,7 comes out and I decide I want to go back there, I would have to switch carriers again.
So, basically, sell me on Android before I go buy another iPhone!

I'm looking for a widget that will disable all sound (including system sound) and put the device into vibrate mode, similar to how the physical silence toggle works on the iPhone. I've tried the Beautiful Silence and Beautiful Vibrate widgets, but they do not play nice together on my Droid X: When I toggle silence, I cannot toggle vibrate and vice-versa. I then moved on to AudioManager, but that involved too many steps for my liking; I just want a quick button press. I am aware of Quick Profile, but that seems like overkill for what I'm trying to accomplish, though I haven't tried it yet. Currently, I'm using Sound Manager, which does exactly what I want, but as a shortcut and not a widget. This is almost perfect. The problem I'm having is that some times, when I click the shortcut it launches the Sound Manager app instead of it's normal behavior: launch the Sound Manager app, change the sound settings, and close Sound Manger in an instant.

Seven ways PC World is wrong about the iPhone-Android matchup
This is very pathetic, obviously written by an iPhone fanboi. When you get to the multitasking part watch how he can only switch between 4 very small apps and that's all he does.

I read that many people in my situation can't text/ receive messages with iphone because of the tricky iMessage.
But my friend's iphone 4s cannot receive 20-50% of my texts, could it be a network issue?
My old Iphone 4s' mother board was dead so ofcourse I did not turn off iMessage.

What is the most efficient way to port an iPhone app to Android? I know Apple doesn't like 3rd-party, non-Objective C platforms generating code for their platform ... but is there something out there that can take an iPhone app and convert it to Android friendly code? f not, how have folks out there been creating Android versions of their existing iPhone apps?

My app has a styles.xml file with various visual constants defined.
I'd like my users to be able to switch the entire app to an alternative visual theme. I'd like to provide an alternative styles2.xml file and switch at runtime (via the Settings).
Is this possible, and how? I suspect the style names' appearance in the generated R class does not bode well.
If it's not possible, what's my next best option?

Here is the problem, I am building an application and have multiple images that need to switch when the user touches the screen, doesn't matter where the users touches. The press the screen and the images switch randomly. I purchased the ebook "Professional Android Application Development" and have torn though it. I am stumped. I'm thoroughly confused at this point. Any ideas on where I can go or how I can accomplish this?

Is there an app to switch off the phone at automatic times? I.e, turns off at midnight so no calls in the night, but switches on before the alarm goes off? I'm fairly sure the alarm doesn't currently go off if the phones off, some of my previous phones have been forced on by the alarm.

There is a really good sticky application out there for the ipod touch called "Stick it". Basically you enter the application and make stickies on a board then save it. It then gets imported as a jpg then you add the jpg to your lockscreen.I was wondering if there is anything like this on the market? I dont wanna go through over 20 sticky apps looking for one. Or if you can port it to the android? I am running a HTC Hero for Sprint.

I'm considering taking the plunge and going all-in with Google. My primary email has always been my hotmail addy, which I've had since. whenever hotmail started. Literally. I've always had my POP addy from my ISP, but it's been more of a secondary address. The changes over the last while to Windows Live services and so forth have made email slow and clunky, and my ISP has got rid of their email servers entirely and Windows Live supplies all their email services. So, a switch to Gmail is under heavy consideration, particularly since I spend more time with my phone now than on my computer. I've got a Google account (obviously) and use many of their services, and have a Gmail account, which I never use. Google's calendar services, among others are terrific, integration with Android is seamless, while using hotmail through Android is a bit of a headache. How do people find Gmail? Is it worth a pretty major change (all my shopping sites, forums, etc will need to be changed to the new email) for what I'm hoping will be easier email usage on the go? Talk me into / out of the switch people, I need your advice.

I know that this list's objective is not to talk about the Market, but if I need a developer's POV. I just now discovered I can't even signup on the Market being from Brazil, so what other alternative I have to distribute my software? It's free / GPL software so I don't even care about payment method, I just want my software to be used and seen. Aside from publishing it on my blog page and tweeting about it, of course.

I keep reading articles about how new competitors to the Android Market are popping up, but I've yet to hear about any specific ones, or what they are offering that would make me want to explore them. The only Other market I've heard of is the Mikandi market for adult/porn apps, but I'm not really interested in that (at least not on my phone). I was wondering whether we could collect recommendations for other Android application stores and download sites, and add a brief review of the sites including a recommendation on why we would or would not want to use them (such as unique recommended downloads not present in the Android Market). we have a similar thread, but that one is about the best apps not found in the Android Market: Best Apps You Won't Find In Market.

However I'm not a big java fan, although I can live with that, I would like to know if there're reasonable alternatives for the android virtual machine. I've done a medium sized project using clojure, however from the reviews I read, it's very slow when running on android. How about scala ? I read that some people did experiments with it in android, is it "fast enough" ? How big is the learning curve ?

Anyone know whats up with TubeDroid? I mean I know WHAT'S up, YouTube changed there protocals, blocking it but are they going to fix it? Other computer based YouTube capturing programs still seem to be working OK.
I went to the makers homepage, I don't seen see it listed on there list of apps anymore. I feel kinda ripped off, paid for this crap and now it doesn't work and no word of a fix.
Sprint's 3G sucks so much butt here, I have to download YouTube video's first in order to make them play smoothly. Any alternatives to TubeDroid?
I would like something that lets me pick the high quality videos etc like TubeDroid did.

Google maps api is great for developing location based services for mobile phones. But for some reason the use of it is restricted for me in a special project.E.g. if your project is in conflict with the general terms and conditions of google it is not recommended to use google maps API.In my app (android, iOS) i want to display a location on a map by retrieving gps information. Overall the api should offer a similar scope of operation like google maps API.Which alternatives do you know? Maybe there are open source api's?

It seems like the number of alternative markets is exploding recently. Every other week I seem to get another invitation. Even in Germany, which is one of the few countries where you can pay and receive payments, (at least?) three big alternative markets were opened within the last few months. While I can understand why there are so many alternatives, I'm a bit concerned about this trend. I'd prefer *not* having to upload my app to about two dozens of alternative stores with different registration requirements, payment options, and languages I only partially understand thanks to Google Translate. Sometimes I wonder why Google even bothered to start an own "centralized" Market if at the end of the day - developers need to upload their apps to more stores than ever existed for Palm and Windows Mobile (combined) - people in most countries can't pay for apps, and in even more countries can't receive money for their apps (not to mention the available payment possibilities aren't common in all of the supported countries.......

As we all know, the Facebook for Android app is amazing. Notifications work like they should, we can actually utilize the "Places" feature, the user interface is spectacular, and it puts the iPhone equivalent to shame. Right. So, until I can actually say that with a straight face, I'm going to need an adequate alternative - this is where you guys come in, what with all your experience and whatnot. Most of the ones I've seen are just links to either the mobile/touch site, or are worse than the stock app (which is really saying something). I've heard of Bloo, but I've also heard the developer stopped, you know, developing it, and instead handed it to the public - and I have no idea how that worked out. So, any suggestions would be great. I'd just like a working Facebook app that doesn't make me want to throw a perfectly innocent puppy through an incinerator.
