I really don't like the Gallery app. I'd prefer the photo gallery to be simpler and let me just flick through photos without any whizzy 3d effects. Is there a way to get the default Photos/Pictures app that some phones came with, or is there any good alternatives people would recommend?

I'm sure it's been asked before but are there any good alternatives to the default Gallery/Albums app?
I have a T-Mobile G2 (HTC Hero) on 1.5 at the moment and the Albums app is such a frustration. I really can't see why the developers didn't figure out a way of navigating a tree structure?
Currently I have a lot of photos and they are stored on the SD card under a directory for year (eg 2007) then a directory for month (eg 03_march) then a directory for the event/place. It's how I store them on the desktop. Of course, the Albums app simply shows me every single directory with photos in, so I lose the ability to navigate by year/month/etc.
I know that Astro file explorer can do what I want, but the image viewer it has is limited and simply not as nice as the Album app, and the thumbnails are too small. Am I alone in NOT wanting to see hundred and hundreds of "albums" but rather see my photos stored how *I* want them stored?
Current iphone 3gs user here. I'm thinking about picking up the N1 and selling the iPhone because of my general dislike for all things Apple, however, I tried out the Droid last year for 30 days and went back to my iPhone. I'm wondering if things have changed significantly in the Android world since then. I'm particularly interested in Android alternatives or flavors of the following iPhone applications:
kindle (kindle reader)
audible (audiobooks)
Jaadu RDP (remote desktop) <-- this one is a deal breaker for me
picasa photo application (uploading and administering albums)
dropbox
OrbI know this existed a few months ago but the implementation was awful. Has it improved?

I'd also be interested to know if the copy/paste functionality has improved at all. When I had my Droid, copy and pasting from the body of an email was almost impossible. You needed to hold down one of the tiny droid keyboard buttons and drag your finger across the screen to highlight the text. At that point if you highlighted the wrong text you were S.O.L because it immediately copied the text as soon as you raised your finger from the screen. Please, please, please, tell me this has been improved! I'd love to get away from my iPhone so that I can delete iTunes forever.

The HTC Gallery is great by the way it organized photos and is easier to use, but isn't an option for an AOSP ROM [afaik]. Does anyone have a recommendation as to what my other options could be? Will the Incredible have the same 3D photo stacking view in the N1? Of all the review videos I've seen it appears it does not but it might just be they chose not to show that off. I really liked that ability to show 3d stacks of photos sorted by date. Is it possible to use the stock android app for viewing photos instead of the sense photo gallery?
View 33 Replies View RelatedGiving it a second shot. So far its been ok. Took a half hour and 4 reboots before I got it stable. That does not include the 2 reboots it did by itself. Also Anyone have a suggestion for a replacement for the gallery app in 2.2. It is really slow and sucks. It is visually pleasing but I want to set a wallpaper quickly and not wait 5 min for it cache all my images. At this point however I do see myself going back to xtr... just no comparison speed wise but I am going to give it a few days solid testing.

When I now load an image using the gallery, everything is fine. When the code is being executed a second time (for loading another image), the application crashes.

Everything is initialized, there are no null values etc. The strange thing is: no exception is thrown, I don't get into the catch block to determine whats going wrong. Am I not allowed to "re-use" the content resolver? Do I have to free it after the first usage or something like this?
I'm trying to set the selection of a Gallery in code. I would like to have the Gallery smoothly roll down a few items over the duration of a second or two. At frist glance, it appears that two members would to the trick:Gallery.setAnimationDuration(int animationDurationMillis); Gallery.setSelection(int position, boolean animate); It turns out that the setAnimationDuration only seems to affect the rubber-bandy "return-to-center" effect of the Gallery. In other words, when a gallery comes to rest after a fling, and a gallery item is off center, the animationDurationMillis is used to control the duration of the Gallery centering up the item. However, the value seems to have no effect on the setSelection. No matter what value is set with setAnimationDuration, the Gallery seems to render about 2 or 3 frames when flying between items 1 and 10 for example. Is this working as designed? Does anyone know a trick or workaround that would let me properly animate setSelection? I'd be especially grateful if we could do it with an "Ease Out" effect.

While debugging, Eclipse is reporting the object obj is of type 'Uri@StringUri' (???) and inside it somewhere is the string 'content:
//media/external/images/media/992'.
Anybody know what type of object obj is so I can typecast it? And what's the string about? IE, how do I get to the image data?
I save an image to the sd card and it doesn't appear in the Gallery application until I pull off the sd card and return it back. Seems like the Gallery application has some cache that isn't updated on file save. Actually, I also want to open the just-saved image in Gallery application and have no success with that.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm considering taking the plunge and going all-in with Google. My primary email has always been my hotmail addy, which I've had since. whenever hotmail started. Literally. I've always had my POP addy from my ISP, but it's been more of a secondary address. The changes over the last while to Windows Live services and so forth have made email slow and clunky, and my ISP has got rid of their email servers entirely and Windows Live supplies all their email services. So, a switch to Gmail is under heavy consideration, particularly since I spend more time with my phone now than on my computer. I've got a Google account (obviously) and use many of their services, and have a Gmail account, which I never use. Google's calendar services, among others are terrific, integration with Android is seamless, while using hotmail through Android is a bit of a headache. How do people find Gmail? Is it worth a pretty major change (all my shopping sites, forums, etc will need to be changed to the new email) for what I'm hoping will be easier email usage on the go? Talk me into / out of the switch people, I need your advice.

Google maps api is great for developing location based services for mobile phones. Even in Germany, which is one of the few countries where you can pay and receive payments, (at least?) three big alternative markets were opened within the last few months. While I can understand why there are so many alternatives, I'm a bit concerned about this trend. I'd prefer *not* having to upload my app to about two dozens of alternative stores with different registration requirements, payment options, and languages I only partially understand thanks to Google Translate. Sometimes I wonder why Google even bothered to start an own "centralized" Market if at the end of the day - developers need to upload their apps to more stores than ever existed for Palm and Windows Mobile (combined) - people in most countries can't pay for apps, and in even more countries can't receive money for their apps (not to mention the available payment possibilities aren't common in all of the supported countries.......
