Android : Switch A Whole Application To Alternative Styles.xml Files At Run Time?

Jul 22, 2010

My app has a styles.xml file with various visual constants defined.

I'd like my users to be able to switch the entire app to an alternative visual theme. I'd like to provide an alternative styles2.xml file and switch at runtime (via the Settings).

Is this possible, and how? I suspect the style names' appearance in the generated R class does not bode well.

If it's not possible, what's my next best option?

Android :: Alternative To Having To Select Device Every Time I Run Droid Application?

Aug 22, 2010

Is there some way to have Eclipse NOT present the Android Device Chooser dialog every time I run the Android application I'm developing? I'm using a running Android device, not an AVD. There's got to be some place I can set my default device to be the Android device so that I don't have to double-click on the device entry in the ADC dialog everytime.

Android :: Alternative To Quick Settings Application

Aug 12, 2010

Whilst browsing in here and on the web for ways to save battery life, I came across an app for turning on and off WiFi, backlight, bluetooth etc. It had a totally different layout to Quick Settings. The screen appeared to have about 12 square buttons, for quick on/off functionality of the usual stuff. WiFi, bluetooth etc. One of the buttons near the bottom right corner was 2G/3G. Does anyone know which app this may be, from my super description? I like the simple one screen does all layout, which was easy to understand. Can't remember if it was from a link in here, or from another site.

Android : IStudiez Pro Alternative - Version Of This Application

Sep 10, 2010

Just wanted to know if anyone could point me in the direction of a decent Android version of this application.

I know you can kinda mimic it's functionality a little bit by simply using the built in calendar, but the idea of an integrated timetable, previous grades, grade calculator, assignment deadlines (a to do list essentially) and all the other stuff it's got look really nice. The nice thing about it is that it's all in one application I think. I've had a look around but so far haven't found anything... any ideas?

Android :: Slow Gallery 3d System Application Alternative

I hate how slow the Gallery3D system app is. It's been slow on both my Motorola Droid & HTC Incredible running various ROMS, including stock. It's ridiculous, actually. The HTC Gallery is great by the way it organized photos and is easier to use, but isn't an option for an AOSP ROM [afaik]. Does anyone have a recommendation as to what my other options could be? Thanks, and please don't flame.

Alternative Menus In Android Native Email Application?

Feb 25, 2010

wanted to add a menu option in native email app in android . I have used intent filters but i am not successful in achieving it. Actuaaly i want to a menu option to the native mail application in Android.. so that my activity / app can be launced on clicking that option. This feature has been successfully achieved in Blackberry and even in android for gallery application. On android i have achieved it by using intent filters.

<activity android:name=".DisplayAlternativeMenu"
android:theme="@android:style/Theme.NoTitleBar">
<intent-filter android:label="My Activity">[code]....

This basically display an menu item"My Activity" when u press share in Gallery. and clicking on that launches my activity .But unfortunately it didn't work for Email Application. Looks like the pair of action & mimetype i am specifying is not correct. which action & which mimetype should be used. Also if there are any permission required, what are they?

My aim is to add an alternative menu while pressing menu in Compose Email(When a mail is composed) of the native email application

General :: Phone Is Suddenly Taking Long Time To Switch On But Not Boot Up

Oct 23, 2013

I recently bought a used, but in good condition Optimus V. Not a great phone, but it does what I need. However, in the past couple days I've found that when the phone does its auto-timeout, it takes up to ten seconds for it to switch back on. By that I mean that when I press the power button just to get to the passcode screen (not to turn the whole thing on), it takes much longer than it did when I first got it.

I've uninstalled recent apps, but it's done nothing. What to do?

Android :: Switch From IPhone - Application Alternatives?

Mar 16, 2010

Current iphone 3gs user here. I'm thinking about picking up the N1 and selling the iPhone because of my general dislike for all things Apple, however, I tried out the Droid last year for 30 days and went back to my iPhone. I'm wondering if things have changed significantly in the Android world since then. I'm particularly interested in Android alternatives or flavors of the following iPhone applications:

kindle (kindle reader)
audible (audiobooks)
Jaadu RDP (remote desktop) <-- this one is a deal breaker for me
picasa photo application (uploading and administering albums)
dropbox
OrbI know this existed a few months ago but the implementation was awful. Has it improved?
Skype
Copy and Paste

I'd also be interested to know if the copy/paste functionality has improved at all. When I had my Droid, copy and pasting from the body of an email was almost impossible. You needed to hold down one of the tiny droid keyboard buttons and drag your finger across the screen to highlight the text. At that point if you highlighted the wrong text you were S.O.L because it immediately copied the text as soon as you raised your finger from the screen. Please, please, please, tell me this has been improved! I'd love to get away from my iPhone so that I can delete iTunes forever.

Android : Install-time Extraction Of .apk Files?

Oct 21, 2010

I'm writing an application and would like to have some files extracted from the .apk during _installation_ time, as the files can be quite large and extracting them from the .apk during the first run results in a noticeable slowdown which I would prefer to avoid.

After lots of experimentation, I have found one way to make this work, but I'm unsure about the "long-term" ramifications of this approach, specifically: will this actually work in android-9 and later?

The approach is to name the files I want extracted at installation time as "lib*.so", and place them into the appropriate lib/ABI folder within the apk file, e.g. the .apk contains:

lib/armeabi/libMyLargeFile.dat.so and at installation time this is (nicely) installed as:

$APPDIR/lib/libMyLargeFile.dat.so

My concern is that 'libMyLargeFile.dat.so' is NOT an ELF shared library. This approach only works because PackageManagerService only checks for files matching the `lib/ABI/lib*.so` pattern (which is followed) and does not check the contents of the extracted file.

This approach works for Android 1.6 through Android 2.2. I'm wondering if this will continue to work in the future, or if I need to investigate an alternate mechanism.

Android :: Bad Time To Switch To Android?

Jul 23, 2010

I'm tired of Apple's shenannigins. Their iOS4 has made my 3g basically unusable. It drops calls all the time and the music has started to stutter at occasions. I'm quite interested in Android phones and I am wondering if a new bunch of Android phones are coming out soon to counter the iPhone 4 release. If they are, then I would be interested in waiting so that I get a product at the beginning of it's cycle (instead of end/middle like the curent 'droids are in). I live in Alaska, so my choices are limited. I can get another phone that works with ATT, or I can get a phone that works with one of the local smaller carriers which are GCI (GSM) or ACS Alaska (CDMA and uses Verizon networks when I am in the states). A quick look at ATTs offerings didn't produce any phones worth mentioning (and I'd like to be rid of ATT if I could find an excuse) and both of the other networks offer $99 heros though I would be up to buying a different phone (nexus 1, etc.) if they are trually worth it.It seems like the iPhone 4 is the phone to beat right now and I can't help but think that there are new sweet Android phones coming soon (like this fall) though I haven't been able to find any info about them. Are there usually phone releases in the Fall/Christmas season? If so, is it worth waiting for them, or is the Hero (or Nexus, Droid. ect.) good enough for the next 2 years?

Android :: Best Time Saving Application

an away-message app called Siesta Text. (this msg ain't spam by the way! i'm truly psyched on the thing). anyhow, this thing sends auto-replies to anyone who calls or sends you texts (if you have it on). my buddy at AOL said he was using a similar one for a while, but Siesta was way cleaner + easier. also, apparently the fact that you can program them to repeat for up to a year is a big deal (?)

i just switched from iPhone to Droid and downloaded it yesterday. have had it for exactly 1 day and it's literally changing my life. anyhow, thought anyone who's interested in saving time (and not feeling the burden of having to respond immediately to everyone) would enjoy it. also, by the looks of their site, they ain't got one for iPhone, so screw you again Apple! again, i JUST joined this board and am probably way late to the party, but check it out!
