Media :: Android 2.2 IPad Alternatives
Nov 28, 2010
Just released in SZ (China). New iPad clones run Android 2.2 / Windows 7 with "decent" hardware equal to iPad, supporting Flash 10.1 and multitasking. 8" Android 2.2 aPad - 1GHz Cortex A8 Processor - 512MB DDR2 10.1" Windows 7 ePad - 1.66GHz Atom N455 - 2GB DDR3 - 32GB SSD. Any reviews, discussion on those? I have laid my money down and waiting for the courier to show up. Been burnt before and not holding my breath, but as an ebook reader and wifi surfer?

Seeing as 2.1 doesn't play Flash what are some alternatives for free streaming movies? Ive tried Divx however 2.1 doesn't support that either. I use to use Stagevu, a similar website would be great!
I tried Veoh however finding a full length movie is more difficult than finding a hooker with a full set of teeth.

Or is the architecture tooooo radically different for it to ever be possible?
I feel my very expensive ipad3 is wasted on iOS, although I hope ios7 adds some novelty to it.
Jelly bean on iPad, that is some drooltastic mental imagery.

I currently have a Hero (Sprint). I have some money and am trying to decide whether I want to buy an Evo off Craigslist (I'm not eligible for upgrade until October--I'll just sell my upgrade then for ~$200) and sell my Hero, or if I want to buy an iPad and sell my Kindle.
I was hoping to get some feedback here from people who own an iPad and could be a little more objective on how they use it than the Apple Fanboys out there.
Cost wise the Evo would be a little less -- I could probably buy the Evo for around $350-$400 and sell the Hero for around $100-$150, whereas the iPad would run me about $530 and I could sell my Kindle for $200. It's fairly negligible difference though.
I don't live in an area that has 4g or will in the foreseeable future. I do a lot of web-browsing on my Hero and spend around ~30 minutes a day reading RSS feeds (NewsRob). I read a lot of news sites and blogs throughout the day (outside of RSS feeds) on my laptop. I don't really use my Kindle as much as I thought I would -- I've read a few books, but I'm not an avid reader. I spend 80% of my reading time on news.
I very much miss my BB Tour's camera flash. I don't carry a regular camera and miss being able to take low light pictures (not looking for anything spectacular -- just the ability to take group pictures of friends and such).
I've played with the iPad and it is fun, and I could see browsing and reading news articles been very comfortable and more enjoyable, especially on the couch or something where I don't have a table. Some of the games are pretty fun (Plants vs Zombies!!!). I don't get eye strain from staring at an LCD screen.
The problem with the iPad is I'm just not sure when I'd use it over the Evo and my Kindle/Laptop. It's large enough that I can't carry it without a backpack, and then at that point I might as well carry my Laptop and/or Kindle with me. I'd also have to decide when to buy apps for the iPad vs the Hero.

I have magazine subscriptions through Newsstand on my iPad, and since Google Play now offers the same magazine subscriptions for my phone I was wondering if there was any way I could transfer them over or have them on both without having to pay for twice the amount of subscriptions.

I have built a multi-touch application which is based on a Java EE backend and combined with BlazeDS to a Adobe Flex frontend. The application runs on a DIY-Multi-Touch which I built. Now I want to use another solution. The Adobe Flex frontend (with a multitouch library) and the BlazeDS adapter should be replaced by a solution which covers iPhone/iPad, Android and commercial Multi-Touch displays. The problem is the iPad/iPhone, there is no Flash Player runtime (not the jail-braked ones), but the application should be runnable also on those devices. So Adobe Flex and a Java frontend (no JVM on the iPhone/iPad) is not possible anymore. At first, starting the developing of the application it was not necessary, to run it on Apples mobile devices, but this changed So, what can I do, using HTML5? So I can use it for Android and iPhone/iPad. But I also want to make it possible to use it on a commercial multi-touch-display and normal display with a mouse (I only have gestures for one finger, the 2-finger gestures are not necessary). Are there any frameworks that allow this? Because I do not want to create several frontends (App for iPhone/iPad on Objective-C and a Adobe Flex for all other devices), it would be great if I can build a frontend for all devices.

Has anyone figured out a way to tether an iPad with the EVO phone for free? I did download Pda.Net but I guess that was not the answer, I thought with the 2.2 update with the Evo there was tethering?

I am torn because tonight I went into BB to look at a Evo to replace my wife's 2 year old and pretty worn out non-smartphone. My wife immediately said she wanted it and left me to play with the demo. Now I am wondering if I should be keeping my iPad...I want the Evo! But I love the iPad. I have been carrying it everywhere...even into grocery stores and restaurants. Took it to several doctor's offices yesterday...it was awesome. I want to mount it in the car. I am much more likely to go mobile with the wife and sit around and just wait on her. Today I worked out at the gym on a treadmil and browsed a magazine...will need to go back and read a couple of articles that I could only look at the Picts and large captions while running. Next time I will try an iBook that allows super large text. But time flew by quicker than it ever has and I hate working out at the gym...so this was really cool.I just want to be more efficient. I want my stuf online like docs and todo items and notes, etc. I am so frustrated with multiple devices and content everywhere. Is there room for a Evo and an ipad? We would have to pay more except that right now, I am paying for unlimited 3G so if I dropped the iPad 3G, it might be pretty close. I had planned on staying on the $15 plan most of the time...but AT&T pulled the fast one of the century. I currently have a Palm centro with ok tethering through dial up (hey it works when there is no 3G).
If I get the Evo, what would be come of my iPad? I already sold my first week purchase of the wifi. Would I really sell my 3G pad after calling BB 5x per day for 3 weeks? I have used the iPad for 3-6 hours per day for almost 2 months now. But a lot of that time has been here on this forum...and in getting the devices setup...which both have been very time consuming.

I'm considering taking the plunge and going all-in with Google. My primary email has always been my hotmail addy, which I've had since. whenever hotmail started. Literally. I've always had my POP addy from my ISP, but it's been more of a secondary address. The changes over the last while to Windows Live services and so forth have made email slow and clunky, and my ISP has got rid of their email servers entirely and Windows Live supplies all their email services. So, a switch to Gmail is under heavy consideration, particularly since I spend more time with my phone now than on my computer. I've got a Google account (obviously) and use many of their services, and have a Gmail account, which I never use. Google's calendar services, among others are terrific, integration with Android is seamless, while using hotmail through Android is a bit of a headache. How do people find Gmail? Is it worth a pretty major change (all my shopping sites, forums, etc will need to be changed to the new email) for what I'm hoping will be easier email usage on the go? Talk me into / out of the switch people, I need your advice.

I know that this list's objective is not to talk about the Market, but if I need a developer's POV. I just now discovered I can't even signup on the Market being from Brazil, so what other alternative I have to distribute my software? It's free / GPL software so I don't even care about payment method, I just want my software to be used and seen. Aside from publishing it on my blog page and tweeting about it, of course.

I keep reading articles about how new competitors to the Android Market are popping up, but I've yet to hear about any specific ones, or what they are offering that would make me want to explore them. The only Other market I've heard of is the Mikandi market for adult/porn apps, but I'm not really interested in that (at least not on my phone). I was wondering whether we could collect recommendations for other Android application stores and download sites, and add a brief review of the sites including a recommendation on why we would or would not want to use them (such as unique recommended downloads not present in the Android Market). we have a similar thread, but that one is about the best apps not found in the Android Market: Best Apps You Won't Find In Market.

However I'm not a big java fan, although I can live with that, I would like to know if there're reasonable alternatives for the android virtual machine. I've done a medium sized project using clojure, however from the reviews I read, it's very slow when running on android. How about scala ? I read that some people did experiments with it in android, is it "fast enough" ? How big is the learning curve ?

Anyone know whats up with TubeDroid? I mean I know WHAT'S up, YouTube changed there protocals, blocking it but are they going to fix it? Other computer based YouTube capturing programs still seem to be working OK.
I went to the makers homepage, I don't seen see it listed on there list of apps anymore. I feel kinda ripped off, paid for this crap and now it doesn't work and no word of a fix.
Sprint's 3G sucks so much butt here, I have to download YouTube video's first in order to make them play smoothly. Any alternatives to TubeDroid?
I would like something that lets me pick the high quality videos etc like TubeDroid did.

I searched around but couldn't find a recent answer to this. Is there still no way to tether the EVO to an iPad without rooting? I don't have an iPad, yet, but am considering getting one and don't want to the pay the extra money to have 3G built in (especially AT&T 3G). I'm not sure I want to bother with rooting my phone (other than this, I've not really come across any reason [personally] to want to root), but if that's the only way I might consider it.

I feel like I'm dying waiting for my Evo to charge up connected to my laptop's USB port (yeah I know, paltry .5 A current, sigh). It then occurred to me that there were some articles about the iPad not being able to properly charge on some USB ports because of the high current necessary to power it. It got me thinking, if we wanted to very, very quickly charge the Evo, why not use the iPad's 10 freakin' watt charger? (the review says it can switch between .5, 1, and 2.1 Amps output, at the usual 5v of course).Has anyone given this a shot? Can we indeed use the full 2.1 amps to charge our Evos like no other?

Google maps api is great for developing location based services for mobile phones. But for some reason the use of it is restricted for me in a special project.E.g. if your project is in conflict with the general terms and conditions of google it is not recommended to use google maps API.In my app (android, iOS) i want to display a location on a map by retrieving gps information. Overall the api should offer a similar scope of operation like google maps API.Which alternatives do you know? Maybe there are open source api's?

It seems like the number of alternative markets is exploding recently. Every other week I seem to get another invitation. Even in Germany, which is one of the few countries where you can pay and receive payments, (at least?) three big alternative markets were opened within the last few months. While I can understand why there are so many alternatives, I'm a bit concerned about this trend. I'd prefer *not* having to upload my app to about two dozens of alternative stores with different registration requirements, payment options, and languages I only partially understand thanks to Google Translate. Sometimes I wonder why Google even bothered to start an own "centralized" Market if at the end of the day - developers need to upload their apps to more stores than ever existed for Palm and Windows Mobile (combined) - people in most countries can't pay for apps, and in even more countries can't receive money for their apps (not to mention the available payment possibilities aren't common in all of the supported countries.......

I really don't like the Gallery app. I'd prefer the photo gallery to be simpler and let me just flick through photos without any whizzy 3d effects. Is there a way to get the default Photos/Pictures app that some phones came with, or is there any good alternatives people would recommend?

As we all know, the Facebook for Android app is amazing. Notifications work like they should, we can actually utilize the "Places" feature, the user interface is spectacular, and it puts the iPhone equivalent to shame. Right. So, until I can actually say that with a straight face, I'm going to need an adequate alternative - this is where you guys come in, what with all your experience and whatnot. Most of the ones I've seen are just links to either the mobile/touch site, or are worse than the stock app (which is really saying something). I've heard of Bloo, but I've also heard the developer stopped, you know, developing it, and instead handed it to the public - and I have no idea how that worked out. So, any suggestions would be great. I'd just like a working Facebook app that doesn't make me want to throw a perfectly innocent puppy through an incinerator.
