Android :: Cell Companies Updates

Dec 29, 2009

I believe Google is about to fumble the ball, so to speak. I sense a growing frustration with users with how various service providers are handling the updates to Android on their devices, such as Rogers in Canada. There doesn't seem to be any uniform system of rolling out Android updates to all the various devices people are using. I can understand if an older device is not functionally able to handle a new version because of hardware limitations but when a company doesn't offer an update to a phone that is capable of handling it, that will cause major problems for Google/Android. I haven't had my HTC Magic all that long but an unable to upgrade to Android 2.0 without rooting the phone which I'm not inclined to try. It's a TIM's version and so far I can find no information about the latest version of Android in the works for it.

Android : Receive Quite Few Text Messages Off Companies Who Send Them Using PC - Appear As From Company Name Rather Than As Phone Number

Jan 4, 2010

Basically, I receive quite a few text messages off companies who send them using a PC, and so they appear as from the company name, rather than as a phone number. For example, texts from T-Mobile appear as from "T-Mobile". However, for some reason every text I get off a company starts a new thread, rather than all being in the same thread.

Android :: Full Refund Product - 24 / 48 Hours?

Mar 10, 2010

In December, there were new terms for the Market. A big note was "You authorize Google to give the buyer a full refund of the Product price if the buyer requests the refund within 48 hours after purchase." It still seems that all references to the refund policy still state 24 hours. http://market.android.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=134336. So is it 48 or 24 hours officially? Is the 48 hours in the agreement just because the 24 hours never seemed to be a hard deadline. I noticed users refunding around 30 hours in the past.

Android :: Get Product Information After Barcode Scanning Into App?

May 11, 2010

Alright, so I'm trying to write a program for Android for a project for school, I figured out how to use Intents to scan, but once I find a product, how do I get that info into my app? For example, say I'm getting info from upcdatabase.com, I would just add the barcode number to the end of the url, but then how to I draw that data in? The same with Google search, how would I draw the data and the image of the item into the app?

General :: Cloning Android To Identical Devices?

Jul 31, 2013

I have purchased 3 Samsung Galaxy Nexus devices for my family, and one for myself. I wanted to setup all our devices for them and pre-install essential apps for them, and lay it out in a way which makes each device identical so that my family (which is new to Android) can all get the same easy experience from their devices, rather than everyone getting a different LG/Samsung/HTC device and having to deal with differences in skins every time someone phones me with a question about their device.

Here is what I have done:

1. Unlocked bootloader, root, installed CM10.1.2 + gapps onto my own personal device. Clean install, wiped everything.

2. Setup android with a temporary Gmail account, installed about 20 apps, setup the homescreen, changed a few settings for simplicity, change wallpapers, etc.

3. Once I was satisfied, I removed the google account, rebooted to recovery (CWM 6.0.3.2) and made a Nandroid backup which was later copied to my home server.

4. Unlocked Bootloader, rooted and installed CM10.1.2 + gapps on all the other devices, booted the device then transferred the Nandroid backup from my home server to each of these other three devices. Restore the backup, reboot, all seems fine so I setup new individual google accounts, and away I went. Everything works fine, at least so it seems.

Now the issue is that I'm having came a day or two after I got everything setup on each device. At the moment I'm having serious issues with the Google Play Store and Push Notifications. Almost all devices intermittently have issues with this. The play store issue I'm getting is [RPC:S-5:AEC-0], and prevents me from downloading or updating apps. Push notifications is not working either. For example, Google hangouts notifications don't notify me of messages on devices intermittently unless I manually check the app. Same goes with facebook and snapchat notifications. Very annoying. Tried all sorts of fixes such as removing the Google account, rebooting and adding it again, but no luck.

I changed the Android ID on each device hoping that would work, but still no luck.

Edit: Tried making a titanium backup of one device and moved it to a rooted Galaxy S2 running CM10.1 nightlies, and no such issue. Also, updated one nexus device to the latest nightly, still no fix.

App Pre-Loaded With Product Images

Dec 12, 2013

I am developing an app that I wish to have pre-loaded with product images.Currently, I am accessing them from the resources folder 'drawable'. However, I also want the user to be able to add to list of products later by retrieving product information and products from a web server.

I can't access the resources folder at run time to save the images, so I need to have a single place to store them and retrieve them later.I have tried saving to the application directory, but am not having much success.I believe that storing images in the database is not considered good practice.

HTC Hero :: Great Product Should Be With Whole Good Package

Sep 16, 2009

Seems to me everyone is so grateful for the Rom update that we haven't had time to be hacked off about it. I work in software and the size and number of these updates says to me that HTC knew about many of these issues before the handset shipped and were already working on fixes them. There is no way things like the camera upgrade are bug fixes found after go live. Someone (probably an accountant) decided that it was OK to ship even with the defects and that when they were fixed it was OK to have an update system that forced us all to completely rebuild our phones or partly rebuild them if we were prepared to buy a third party app to back them up.

If HTC seriously want to take on the Iphone they are going to have to be a lot slicker in future. Just having a great product is not good enough you need the whole package if you want mass market appeal. In the end they may have shot themselves in the foot. This update may have largely fixed the lag but all those early reviews are still out there and people considering this phone will still find them and be put off for months or years to come. Don't get me wrong I love it and would not change it for an Iphone or anything else I am just sad that such a great product has been so badly tainted by poor customer service and niggling faults.

HTC Droid Eris :: Checksum Proof That 2.1 Leak V3 Is 99% Identical To OTA 2.1

May 14, 2010

I just spent half an hour going through each file in the OTA upgrade ZIP and comparing its CRC (checksum) to the same exact file in the "leak v3" PB00IMG.ZIP, including all of the files inside system.img. Process: First off, just by opening the two ZIP files with 7-Zip I can see that the boot.img, radio.img, and recovery.img are identical. In both ZIPs, their CRCs are EA7388FA, 54C41EEC, and 3F0153F1 respectively.

Since the OTA breaks down system.img into just the files that need updating (for the purpose of keeping the file size as low as possible), the only way to compare the files with system.img in "leak v3" was to use the root ROM created from "leak v3". (Thank goodness there's an unadulterated ROM of it, so the original CRCs are intact!) One by one, I compared the CRCs of the files in the OTA's system folder with the same files in the "leak v3" system folder. Findings: The files that are in the OTA are completely identical to the ones in the leak v3 system.img, with only one exception: The OTA contains an additional app called UpgradeSetup.apk. Obviously, it's only necessary for executing the upgrade..............

Android :: Phone Call Simulator Application

Oct 28, 2010

Suppose I wanted to design a cheap little app which lets you schedule fake phone calls to yourself, along similar lines as this app:
http://magictap.net/fakecalls/

I'd imagine using an AlarmManager would be suitable for this purpose, the question is how to generate a fake incoming call screen, complete with the slide to answer call option. My initial approach, the AlarmManager should launch a PendingIntent. However, I'm not sure where to go from here, in particular to get an Activity started which displays the fake call screen.
