Android :: Returns A Super Simple List Of Objects?

Apr 22, 2010

I have a web service that returns a super simple list of objects. MyObject[] data = webServiceCall();

MyObject has 1 field i want to display, "Name" (i.e. data[0].Name )

How can i turn this into an activity that lists just the name of these objects in a scrollable listActivity in android. I am getting really confused with Cursors and am not sure if I need Cursors and I"m not sure what kind of adapter to implement (baseAdapter, SimpleAdapter etc)

So i guess i'm looking for three things, the activity , the adapter and the layout.xml. Just trying to figure this android stuff out.

Android :: List Returns To Top After Update

Sep 7, 2010

I have a list that gets refreshed every 2 seconds via the Handler postDelayed() method.Every 2 seconds an AsyncTask is run that makes an HTTP GET request, turns the JSON into a list of objects, then sets the ListAdapter.My problem is that every time the task completes (so, roughly every two seconds) my list jumps back to the top, even if I have scrolled down to the middle or bottom of the list. This would be very annoying to the end user, so I need the list to update in the background, as it's doing, but the current view of the list to not jump back to the top at the completion of the AsyncTask.I can include any more code needed. I'm somewhat new to android development, so I'm not sure what is helpful to others.

Android :: FindViewById(R.id.list) Returns Null

Sep 23, 2010

I have a class that is called when my app launches. public class MainActivity extends Activity implements NetworkEvent.

In this situation, list = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.list); works perfectly.

However if I then call a new intent via:

CODE:.........

where SimpleList is defined as: public class SimpleList extends ListActivity implements NetworkEvent then when I call

CODE:.........

From within the SimpleList class, list is null :(

How come? Both classes are within the same package.

Android :: Pass Objects Around Activities Using A HashMap Of WeakReferences To Objects?

Oct 26, 2010

The FAQ mentions a method of passing objects around activities. (It is not clear to me): "A HashMap of WeakReferences to Objects. You can also use a HashMap of WeakReferences to Objects with Long keys. When an activity wants to pass an object to another activity, it simply puts the object in the map and sends the key (which is a unique Long based on a counter or time stamp) to the recipient activity via intent extras. The recipient activity retrieves the object using this key.".................

Android :: How To Filter Objects To Display Onscreen Objects On Map?

Jun 15, 2010

I have an application that have a Google map on Google Android 1.5 since we have been working on the application for a long time, we are not in stage of upgrading to the newest framework, so we are using 1.5. Now, I have map locations that are dynamically generated and drawn on the map at run-time to visualize some streams, Up to this point the application is working fine, Now my problem is that I am trying to filter the objects ( addresses) to visualize only the on-screen ones. I do NOT want to visualize the addresses that are off-screen. The way I am trying to do this is to check the screen-coordinates of each object (address) before visualizing it, then it the coordinates (x,y) more than (0,0) and less than (320, 460). I should visualize it. I am trying to use this approach, but it is not working for some reasons, I have tried many posts but could not understand why, there must be something missing somewhere that I am not aware of.

Android : When / Where To Invoke Overridden Method Of Super Class?

Apr 14, 2010

This question occured to me while programming a Android application, but it seems to be a general programming question more.

The situation is, I am extending (subclass-ing) an class from a library, and overriding a method. how do I know if I should invoke the method of super-class? and when? (in the beginning of the overridden method or in the end?)

For example, I am overriding the method "public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu)" from class "Activity" in Android platform. And I saw someone write "return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu)" in the end of the method, in an example. But how do I know it should be done this way? and it is correct or not? what's the difference if I begin my method with "super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu)"?

But, here, we call A.class; My concern is that i don't want to call on Create(),nor do i want to push UI screen I just want to make 1 static object for 1 screen;and want to manage it throughout my application. that is, instead of calling A.class; can i call A a = new A(),and manage that object without pushing,and whenever i need i push that screen. Android :: Super Fast Autocomplete Using Binary Search In Sorted File

Sep 15, 2010

In my Android app I want to have an input field with autocomplete. The number of items will be about 300000. The best solution seems to be to put the items into a file (on sdcard), one item per line, each line would have the same number of characters so that I can seek to specific line number. If the user enters something in the text field, I would binary search (via RandomAccessFile) the file and show suggestions.I want the autocomplete to be super fast (ideally under 100ms but I guess it's impossible), what optimizations I can do?

Update 1:
I will convert the users input to lowercase english characters (a-z) with spaces. So 'A/b' would be converted to 'a b' and then searched.

Uodate 2:
I now realized I need additional thing - to search for word-starting substrings.

Android :: UI State Information - Used In Super.onCreate - Bundle SavedInstanceState - Stored

Nov 7, 2010

Where is the UI state information (used in super.onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState)) stored and how can it be deleted from another app or command line on a rooted phone?

I need to delete the user data (username, password) of both the native Facebook app (com.facebook.katana) and the stock browser on Android (com.android.browser) on a rooted phone via command line (which I call from my own app) or elsewhere from my own app.

This is what I'm calling:

rm /data/data/com.android.browser/cache/webviewCache/* rm /data/data/com.android.browser/databases/* killall -9 com.android.browser

rm /data/data/com.facebook.katana/cache/webviewCache/* rm /data/data/com.facebook.katana/databases/* killall -9 com.facebook.katana

After I kill the facebook process, I check the running processesand there is no FB process running anymore. I then restart FB via long-press on home and choosing the FB app. Previous username/password still show on the login screen (= same screen as I left it before I killed the app). When I then press 'back' on the device, and then start the app again via home long-press / select FB, the login screen is empty.

Where do the values for username/password come when I start FB again in the first place? I assume that the login activity still retrieves the savedInstanceState, but how could that be avoided - or else, where are those UI states actually stored, in order to delete them? Shouldn't the restarted app, after all it's processes are killed, already be in a new lifecycle?

Same problem is with the stock browser: if i leave the browser and I'm on the login page of for example gmail.com where the username/password is entered (but form not submitted yet), then killing the browser process, the values (username) entered into the form will still be there after restarting the app again after it's been killed.

Android :: Passing An ArrayList Of Objects

Nov 12, 2010

Is there a way to pass an Array List of objects between activities? The myObject implements Parcelable and I'm able to successfully pass the objects around individually, but that means I need to have an exact amount of "myObjects" coded. I want this to dynamically grow/shrink by what the user does with the app. I have seen some posts on the web about doing:

Activity A
ArrayList<myObject> myObjArray = new ArrayList<myObject>();

Then when passing this into the intent I would use:
intent.putParcelableArrayListExtra("myObjArray", myObjArray);

Activity B
ArrayList<myObject> myObjArray = new ArrayList<myObject>();
Bundle extras = getIntent().getExtras(); myObjArray = extras.getParcelableArray("myObjArray");

However, the myObjArray always gets filled with "null". How can I achieve this?

Alternative i could have another table with the samples Or I could simply have files with filename = name and content = samples.my concern might be unclear by now, but put simply, what is most effecient regarding power usage?
