Android :: Reduce File Size Of Application In Market
Jan 16, 2010
I want to reduce the file size of my application in the market. The strange thing is that my application "LeonardFrog.apk" just uses 4mb but the Google-Market shows me that it uses 8mb. You can search for it (Leonard Frog Beta) in the market. How can this be???
In my application, there are many images and long sounds. My folder "res" just uses 3,7mb and there is nothing else in my game beside the quellcode. So WHY is the size of my game in the market 8mb?

Can somebody explain to me what makes up the installed application size? I have an apk that is about 8 MB, and often when I install I get the INSUFFICIENT_STORAGE error. I have around 25-30 MB free space on the phone. I'm doing debugging so I have to upload lots of new versions. If I uninstall the previous version then I can install the new version. The application manager claims that the app is taking up 22 MB. So back to the original question, how come the app is taking up 22 MB when it really only is 8 MB?

When I install my app on the phone to test, it is showing up to be a HUGE size, 11.35 MB. It is a very simple app that lets user browse through fun-facts. The only reason I can think of is that there are 14 JPEG files in the drawables which serve as background images of the fun-facts. The average size of these is about 500 KB.I'd like to trim the size of my app, so as not to use up the precious resources on the user's device. Other than just getting rid of the pictures, are there ways to optimize the size of apk file?

I've just released an update to my app and the apk file is 3.5mb on my system. It is reported as 3.5mb in the developer console. But in the market it is showing up as 7.02mb. I'm now getting comments that that app is too big and I feel people may not purchase it if they think it will take up 7mb of space.

I've used an Alert Dialog builder to display 6 items my user can choose from. Unfortunately for just a few pixels missing, it displays only half of the last item and adds a scrollbar. Beside, centering of the dialog is awkward, there is a 20px padding at the top but only 2px at the bottom. I was wondering if there is a way to reduce font size or vertical spacing in the Alert Dialog builder programatically.

I learned from several discussions of this group that BitmapFactory.decodeFile() allocates heap memory outside of the "java heap". My app receives encrypted files from a remote server. Decoding those files needs a lot of heap space. After finishing this decoding step most of the allocated heap space will be freed by the GC. But the (total) heap size - as displayed by the DDM - remains large. In this situation there is not enough heap space outside of the "Java heap" to decode even medium sized image files using BitmapFactory.decodeFile(). At the moment I limit the size of encrypted files to ensure that the Java heap space never increases to more than 10 MB. This ensures that there is enough memory for BitmapFactory.decodeFile(). But this is not very elegant.
Is it possible to tell the dalvik-vm to reduce the (total) heap size to have more space for decoding images or is there another solution?

I don't suppose there is a way to reduce the amount of space around the icons for apps/folders? When you remove the text under the images you could easily fit an extra row of icons on a homescreen by getting rid of some of the blank space.

What do you use to reduce the size of photo's to upload here? What I do is right click the photo and select "Send To" then " Mail Receipt" then window's asks me if I want to "Reduce the size of the photo so they will send faster" and I click "Make my pictures smaller" then when outlook express opens I right click on the jpg and drag it to a folder on my desktop so when I upload I get the picture there. Is this OK or is there an easier or better way of doing this?

I have 3 video files each of 70 MB in my raw folder besides other audio files of few KBs. I am getting an installation error of insufficient space on the DROID while testing my app. I tried uninstalling apps and am now left with apps that are essential to the device.
What needs to be done to resolve this issue? I also wonder what will be the app size that i am allowed to upload to the android market?

For Wuzzle, the signed trial APK is 878KB and the signed full game APK is 934KB. I do have copy protection turned on for both and it did say it would increase the space needed. I figured that meant it would add an extra 10KB or something reasonable. They are listed on the market as being 1.71MB and 1.82MB respectively. I didn't think it would literally double the app size!
My other game, Light Racer has a signed APK of 288KB and is posted with no copy protection. It is listed on the market as 289KB, which is correct.
Has anyone else noticed this?

I had the thought of checking for tampering with the apk by embedding a couple of checks against it's size once installed on the device.I was just a bit concerned that maybe the size would change dependent on the device (e.g. different FS format or whatever).

Is there a limit to the size of the .apk file when using it on the emulator. When I run the default app created while creating a project, the .apk file size is about 5K and it runs ok. When I try to run a real app which uses other application libraries so that the total size is about 325K, I get the following error: Failed to upload Benchmark.apk on device 'emulator-5554' java.io.IOException: Unable to upload file: timeout Launch canceled! I had increased the heap size of emulator to 64 MB and RAM size to 192 MB.

My app needs to save files that will range from about 2-20mb. When I tried to do this I was getting an OutOfMemoryException. I did some reading and it's looking like Android has a file size limit of 1mb. Is this correct? If so, is there a way around this limitation, other than splitting up every file into 1mb chunks?

I have written a small video player application. In that some video files are playing well. But some are not playing at all. I am thinking that this is because of the video size.
So I just want to let the users know the size of the video and to show an alert saying because of this size, this file can't be played.
How to know the size of the video?

FTP client = new FTP Client();
FTP client.setListHiddenFiles
FTP client.connect(host Part);
FTP client.login(user Name, password);
FTPclient.setFileType(FTP.BINARY_FILE_TYPE);
Input Stream instream = FTP client.retrieveFileStream(pathExcludingHostIncludingFirstSlash);
int l;
byte[] tmp = new byte[2048];
int update Counter = 0;
int bytes Downloaded = 0;
while ((l = instream.read(tmp)) != -1) {
Foss.write(tmp, 0, l);
bytes Downloaded+=2048;
update Counter++;
if(update Counter==3){
kilobytes Downloaded=(bytes Downloaded / 1024);
publish Progress((String[])null);
update Counter=0}
