Android :: How Google Market Provides Security Of Application
Aug 21, 2009
I want to learn that how google android market provides security of application. That is, I realize that, when user downloads application, market downloads and install application atomically to phone. I am designing market and security is important issue so I wonder that how google achieve this?
How is application installed phone?
1) Is the apk downloaded sdcard and deleted after installation? In the case of this how can market guarantee that when apk downloaded to sdcard, program finishes unexpectedly and installation- deletion of apk cannot be done?
2) Or installation is done from server?
3) I think that there exists security not to copy apk. how do they do this?
Maybe they use phone id to install application, by this way even if anyone copy apk they cannot install it other phone?

Totalcare is back on Android Market. The software basically is a hidden app that once installed and activated, runs a service at background which can't be stopped. The service will listen for SMS' from either of 2 control phones set during the activation procedure and will invoke methods accordingly. SMS commands are quite simple and is followed by a 5-Digit PIN Code which is set during the activation method. The software is free for testing purpose. Its still in beta state and we're quite sure its stable. We've tested the product several times on multiple devices without any failure or bug. We've tried using the latest API's of android so that it can be compatible with the latest devices. The software won't work below API Level 4 (Android 1.6). I haven't tested it on 1.6 either since i've only 2.1 available here. Please try it and let me know if it works. The app can be used as a remote mobile management or anti-theft.Very useful in certain situations, like if you drop your phone somewhere, you can find it using the location fetching features. Maybe you left your phone somewhere in silent mode, just send an sms to make it sound loud and find your phone. several such other features.

I searched around I don't think that this question had been asked: Should I download the apps in that market that are already on my droid 2? (Ex.: Google Voice Search, Google Street View, etc.)

I'm building an Android application that needs to communicate with a MySQL database. The application isn't meant to be published, and I want the application to be the only thing allowed to interface with the web service I'll create for DB access.
I've been thinking how I can secure the system, and this is the idea I've come up with. I'd appreciate any feedback or other ideas. Surely there is a method built into Android that I am unaware of.
My thought is to give the web service a GUID. Each time a call is made to one of it's public methods, the web service matches its GUID with the GUID given to it by the Android application. If the GUIDs do not match, the web service refuses access. In short, my system has a 128-bit password.

Remember there used to be interesting one, with 9 dots, draw to unlock screen. Is that still available or there is some better choice?

Seems to me that Lock 2.0 is the best Screen Lock I've found. Only Issue is, even with the security code enabled, all one has to do is power on/off the phone and your in with no need for the code. What I am looking for is a locking app that doesn't get disabled when powering the phone off/on. Looking for something secure much like every BB has where no matter what you do, to proceed into the phone you need to type in the Lock Code.

I just noticed yesterday accidentally that you can press and hold the search button on the lock screen and perform anything Google Voice Actions is capable of. I am using a Droid 2 unrooted. This may affect the Droid X as well. This is a huge security flaw in Motorola's modified pattern/PIN lock screen. Hopefully this thread garnishes enough attention so that this can be patched soon! Steps to reproduce:
1. Lock your screen
2. Press and hold the search button "magnifying glass"
3. Speak any voice action and the phone will respond. Note: you will not get any visual or audible cues (in Google Voice Actions) that it is working, but it is!

I would really like to know if it is realistically secure to sync my phone with Google Calendar and other Google tools. The Calendar website is not secure because it is not an https site so that means all my calendar stuff is open to the web. Put this together with my phone contacts list and some unscrupulous person could work out where I live and when I'm out of the house. What do you all think about this?

I'm writing this after I just previewed my post. I obviously don't know how to post pictures. What file hosting sites are you guys using to share pictures?
I don't know why these links are not coming up below. The HTML tags are IMG and /IMG which look right to me. [URL]
Oh, well. I don't know why it won't embed but at least the links are live so you can click on them to see what my original post is talking about.
I recently installed and started using Google Tracks and Google Earth last night and now, this morning, I can't do a Google search in the search bar widget or in Chrome url field. Here are some of the results I have been getting after trying. How do I correct things so that I can continue searching as normal?

I am looking for an application that will allow me to lock out certain applications and features. For example, its common that someone wants to tinker with my phone because they have never seen it. I don't want the messing around in my messaging center, gmail, etc. But the general phone lock is not enough. I want to specify certain apps and functions that will require password or gesture. I found "ES Security manager - application protector" in the market. It worked okay for a day, now its buggy. When I go to a locked app and put in my password. Now it goes to the protector settings instead of the application. Also, it can easily be killed from a task manager app. I need a good solid app that will do this for me.

I have noticed that Gmail is taking a little bit longer to sync, if it syncs at all. I have had to use the manual refresh in my Gmail app to populate mail most of the day today.I have run some tests, and it appears that Gmail will sync in random amounts of time. Sometimes 5-10 minutes, sometimes more than 15 minutes. Up until yesterday, it was almost instantaneous. When I send mail, or change labels, or delete mail on my Droid, the changes are noticed on my Gmail account within a minute or just like normal. It appears to only be a problem with fetching new mails.I have cleared the Gmail app cache, I have turned off sync - rebooted my phone - turned sync on again everything I can think of.

Is Google Latitude available in the UK or not, because it doesn't seem to be working for me? I have received the RC9 update for G1 and have Google Maps 3.0. Is there an a Google Latitude application that I should have or do I access everything through Google Maps? When I go the www.google.com/latitude on my G1, it offers me the option of "launching" Latitude but it just takes me to Google Maps. From there, I cannot see the locations of my Google "friends" (who have agreed to show location), neither does my own location show up on the Latitude homepage on the web (I have settings turned to "detect my location automatically").

I am creating an application that checks the installation of a package and then launches the market-place with its id.
When I try to launch market place with id of an application say com.mybrowser.android by throwing an intent android.intent.action.VIEW with url: market://details?id=com.mybrowser.android, the market place application does launches but crashes after launch.
Note: the application com.mybrowser.android doesn't exists in the market-place.
MyApplication is my application.
CODE:..........
However, when I try to launch the market place for a package that exists in the market place say com.opera.mini.android, everything works. Log for this case:
CODE:..................

I hope to figure out the direct URL link to my application on the market like http://market:blahblah
I was able to find the application ID previously by going to the UI interface to upload application, and looking at the URL link that can edit the app.
However, this method doesn't seem to work any more because the now the edit URL link contains only the package name and not the app ID.
Any idea how to get the application ID?

Wasn't there mention back during the Google conference of a Android media center type of application for the PC. Hate to think of the Itunes but yes, an itunes like application but for Android. Organize our music and other programs on the computer and sync it up. Make searching for applications easier and we can back up our downloaded ups on the pc.
Its great to use our phones as flash drives with plug and go but is there something already on the market or elsewhere that can do what I've mentioned?

How about they make a form of payment, by phone. Meaning they bill your phone, instead of using a credit card. Because a lot of us do not have a credit card, thus not able to buy applications. I would really like it if they managed to do such thing, because I would be one of their number 1 customers.

I am curious about the procedure for updating an app that was acquired off the market. Do you simply install over your existing app? And if so, what happens to your existing data?Is there a way to tie your installed apps to the market, so it can automatically check for updates? Any information is appreciated.

Something really strange happened today and I could really use some help figuring it out. I believe its related to Google's SSO infrastructure, and I don't really know how to contact Google to get my application rescued.
I have a google apps account I used to create the application, its claytantor at sightlyinc dot com not a f...@gmail.com account but its a Google Apps account, so I used it to upload and distribute my application. Today when I was using blogger my account said "do you want to use claytantor at sightlyinc dot com or claytantor at sightlyinc dot com for this account?" what kind of choice is that they are both the same? Well my guess is that somehow I chose the one that locks me out of my Android Market account because when I went to try to upload a new version of my app it thinks I don't have an Android Market account.
Paying the extra 20 bucks wouldn't bug me but there is a version of my software out there that I cant access or manage now, and that *really* bothers me. If I create a new account I will have two versions of mys software floating around the new one and the old one that has been stranded! I cant live with that.

This has come up before, but I'm still not clear. I published my first app last night. It sunk like a stone. I want to change its name. I don't want to force the few people who have downloaded it to get an update. It seems to me that if I:
1. Change the android: label in the manifest to be the new name, and
2. Resubmit it with the same version number
Then the name in the market should change but not force an update. Is this correct?

Today, I placed our new app onto the market store. It can be found by most mobile phones - unfortunately, it cannot be detected by one specific model which is used by one of our customers. It is the Vodafone 845, with a small screen (240x320p) and low density (120 dpi). It's running with Android 2.1, updated version (i.e. SDK 7), and has all the necessary hardware (GPS, cam, and internet access), but, however, doesn't detect the app in the market. I have already tried anyDensity="true". The app is free, not copy protected, and open to all countries. I have the following settings in the manifest:
xmlns:android="xxx"
package="xxx"
android:versionCode="10"
android:versionName="1">
<supports-screens
android:largeScreens="true"
android:normalScreens="true"
android:smallScreens="true".............

I woke up this morning to 2 new 1-star rating on my app, which made it 3 total. There were no comments and no purchase cancellations in the last couple of days, so I said to myself WTF, 2 people actually kept the app and gave it a one star? I thought it might be a competitor. But I just looked again and the 2 new 1-stars have disappeared. What is going on with the market?

I just released a major update to my wootCheck application in the market and feel that it is the best woot checking app available by far. My app checks all of the different woot sites and shows everything you would need to know about the product. It auto-refreshes for wootoffs and is extremely fast. I am currently working on a few new features but if you try it and can think of something you would like to see comment below.
