Android :: SECURITY FLAW - Google Voice Actions Usable On Lock Screen?
Oct 13, 2010
I just noticed yesterday accidentally that you can press and hold the search button on the lock screen and perform anything Google Voice Actions is capable of. I am using a Droid 2 unrooted. This may affect the Droid X as well. This is a huge security flaw in Motorola's modified pattern/PIN lock screen. Hopefully this thread garnishes enough attention so that this can be patched soon! Steps to reproduce:
1. Lock your screen
2. Press and hold the search button "magnifying glass"
3. Speak any voice action and the phone will respond. Note: you will not get any visual or audible cues (in Google Voice Actions) that it is working, but it is!

Either by ROM, App, or Rooting/Otherwise, is there a way to make the lock button have multiple functions on my Galaxy Nexus? My goal is to be able to use Voice Actions from a locked phone (like in the car, for example).I noticed some posts on editing hardware buttons, but that was neither for the Galaxy Nexus nor for a lock button.
Ideally, 2 quick clicks would pull up Voice Actions from a locked phone.I guess if I could permanently have Voice Actions in the notifications section, I could drag down from a locked phone and accomplish the same thing. I use slide to unlock, so dragging down on notifications bar is still available.
I have not rooted yet but would do so just for this functionality (I'm now a corporate tool so I try to hack as little as possible these days)...

I'm using mini pro. I set up the lock screen. But over the course of days, I notice something strange. When I turn on the screen, my lock pattern is show on the screen for a second before vanishing and letting me enter. This hint, for sharp eyes, can be a tell for my lock. Kinda beat the essence of locking the screen.

Whats everyones take on both these applications? I've just started using the new google voice actions and think its amazing, and actually interprets my speech quite well! Voice actions I think provide a bit more robust actions over vlingo, as they can be used to get directions, navigate you somewhere, call certain businesses etc.
I do like the idea of Vlingo's, text to speech, reading who's calling you or a new email or message. I use handcent and that has text to speech although its extremely quiet even if i turn it up completely. I also can't understand it most of the time as it speaks too fast in its funny computer voice!
Another plus, Vlingo is now FREE! I haven't downloaded it yet as I'm just enjoying Googles new voice actions, but I would be interested in a comparison with accuracy and speed in both these applications!

I am currently using lockbot pro and I have the option set to ask for a pattern before it will unlock (which has enough glitches as is but anyway...). Now what I noticed on my HTC Incredible is that if you hold the home button it shows you the last things you had running. So when it asks for my security pattern I just hold home and click htc sense. No password needed.

I was trying to use the google voice actions app, when it didnt work i figured it was the app, when the next 3 phone calls didnt work i figured it was the phone. this will be number 3 or 4, i cant remember. though i have had this one for about three months. Just got me wondering, how long have you had your particular phone, and if you did get it replaced in the past, what was the reason?

Since Google Voice Actions only runs on froyo, you'd think the Hero would be left out.
Try Vlingo, which, since the GVA announcement, is now free. It's pretty amazing. Not perfect, but very useful.
Vlingo can also be set to read your texts/emails to you (good for driving).

Apparently you can bypass the lockpattern by hitting the Home Screen during an incoming call:

I was googling for "google voice actions eclair" in the hopes that a 2.1 version was in the works, and I found out that Vlingo (normally $9.99 in the market) is now free. It does some of the same things that the Google one apparently does (no setting alarms, though, too bad).

So Google has finished their announcement and it's Chrome to Phone & Google's One-Button Voice Actions. Basically my question is are these features that would just need to be turned on in the ROMs or are these things going to be released in future Froyo updates? I understand for Chrome to Phone it's going to be a plugin in Chrome and a download from the market for the phones.
Chrome to Phone on Gizmodo
One-Button Voice Actions on Gizmodo
After doing some research I've found Chrome to Phone available in the Market and in the Chrome Extensions. Works perfectly
Initially got the package signed incorrectly error for the Voice Search, did a nand backup, used titanium to uninstall the default voice search, rebooted and installed voice search through the market. Worked perfectly. I'd assume this would work for any Froyo ROMs but haven't tested.

I was looking at all the nice music apps available with nice UIs and noticed that however good they may be, none allow connectivity to Google Music to access songs from the cloud.
I had read that someone released an unofficial Google Music API, however I haven't seen any apps take advantage of this. Also, not many apps seem to take advantage of Google Voice Actions to launch songs.
Any apps that have taken advantage of the API? What happened to the project?

Ive just noticed today that with the phone locked, upon recieving a call the phone switches to being unlocked even after the call is finished. i do look after this phone much more than i have done with other mobiles, but it strikes me that if i do misplace it, the first thing i do is get a mate to ring me to see if its under somthing or at someones house ect. it seems that doing this unlocks the phone for anyone to use or to have a nosey through your personal stuff..is there an autolock after call feature? or an app that does this?

Is it possible to password protect the recovery image; where we flash our roms ect...?
I have password protected the device to stop the phone being used while it is on, but it's really pointless when someone can turn the phone off and just reflash the device.
Granted, they could do that anyway even if i had an offical rom without the recovery image, but it would still be a nice feature if it's possible.

why my Brand New Samsung Galaxy S3 is switching screens from whatever screen I am currently on to the Security and Lock Screen?
It seems it may be APP related because when I KILL my apps with the Advanced Task Killer it doesn't happen as often.
ALL the Apps are the same Apps that were on my previous phone (Samsung Captivate) which never did this. There are no NEW Apps on this phone.
Software is current and up to date as it was downloaded within 5min after un-packaging the phone.

I was having a problem getting VA to call anyone in my contacts. It would want to call some random business and offer to Google the person I actually wanted to call. After searching for a while I came upon the solution of clearing out the contacts data - Menu, Settings, Applications, Manage Applications (select "All"), Contacts Storage -- the select Clear Data. Then re-sync your contacts with your Google contacts. You may want to backup your contacts before you do this. I didn't lose any, but YMMV. Note that this also cleared up a sync issue I was having with my Google contacts. May the force be with you and live long and prosper.

I know there was a thread about it on here before, but I cant seem to find it. I'm just wondering how to get it working properly on my 2.2 Desire. I'm in the UK. I know there was mention of changing the language or something?? And I remember someone gave a list of all the actions they had gotten it to do so that would be useful as well as what to say to get those actions.

I remember sometime in 2009, when google navigation was restrict to US, some people used to Hack it to make it work outside the US..Voice Action is restrict in english. The app is there.. if I change my locale settings to English US, it works... But when I set it back to portuguese, it only works in search mode...I was then wondering if it was possible to hack it to make it work in other languages, since it can already recognize speech pretty well in portuguese...

Is anyone else getting the "unable to install error" when trying to install the new "Voice Actions for Android" (known as Voice Search in the marketplace) when using Cyanogen-RC1? I want to be able to do these things with nothing but my voice!

My friend with an iphone has the Nuance speech recognition SW and it's great. Looking for similar for my X, but all I see that's close is Google's new Voice Actions. It only compatible with 2.2. Is there another option until my OS is upgraded OTA by VZW? I'm not comfortable rooting.

HTC Desire, Android 2.2, new Google Voice Search
Several commands - 'send text to', 'send mail to', 'note to self' and 'go to' - are missing. They are not parsed, and they do not appear in the Help list when voice search is launched.
Is this because I don't use the standard HTC message, mail and browser apps, by any chance? (But they are still on the phone, of course.)
I noticed that if I just speak a web search, it launches the HTC browser, whereas Dolphin is my dafault browser.

This isn't really Incredible specific -- more of a general Android 2.2 complaint, but the inability to access Google Voice Actions/Search over bluetooth is a HUGE missed opportunity by Google, in my opinion. I mean, I LOVE the new voice actions -- it's such a great feature and really makes the phone easy to use. However, it's inability to work over bluetooth makes it difficult, if not impossible to use in the car -- a place it would be perfect for. If you want to use it in the car, you basically have to scream loud enough so the phone mic can pick you up over the road noise and it also requires holding down the search button to initiate, so it's not exactly hands free.
As it stands now, if you access the phone via Bluetooth, all you get is the voice dialer, which only provides the ability to dial names and numbers via voice commands. Imagine if you could access voice commands via bluetooth and create text messages and emails while driving, notes to self, get directions, etc. Since voice actions can also handle calling contacts, I'm not even sure what remaining value the "voice dialer" has over the Voice Actions/Search functionality. At a minimum, Google should at least provide a setting for specifying which voice app (voice dialer or voice actions/search) would be accessed when connecting via bluetooth.
Anyone know if it would be possible for a developer to come up with a custom application that would allow voice actions via bluetooth? My guess is that Google will fix this eventually, so maybe I just need to be patient. It just seems like it would be relatively easy and could be included with an update to the Voice Search app.

I would like to use Google voice actions to add a task to my Google tasks list. And no, using voice actions to text twitter to direct message Remember the Milk is not good enough. That's just silly. I want to hit the microphone button, say, "new task buy more bacon" and have it show up in my pure calendar widget.

So you decide that you want to add your password to your voice-mail on your eris, this is helpful especially with the proximity sensor, as it appears to disable the screen for a couple of seconds when listening for please enter password. So you input your password for your voice-mail on your phone and now when someone call and leaves a message, it shows on the bottom of the lock screen you have a new message and *86ppXXXX# and your password.Anyone know how to hide the voice-mail password from showing on the lock screen?

I flashed jelly bean onto my galaxy nexus over the past weekend.Playing around with it, I've noticed that voice actions just don't work.Every time I say 'Call Contact', it searches for the phrase instead of performing the action. I've tried other voice actions too like setting alarms, writing emails but nothing works. My phone just performs a web query each time.
