Android :: Draw MapView - Rectangles That Automatically Re-size When User Zooms In And Out
Aug 26, 2010
My Android application has a MapView. I want to divide that MapView into a grid according to latitude and longitude, and shade the different cells of that grid different colors based upon a certain criteria. What's the simplest way to do this?
I could create semi-transparent, solid-color PNG Drawable rectangular images and put them in an ItemizedOverlay centered on the central points of the cells, but then the rectangles would grow and shrink as the user zoomed in and out on the map. I could extend MapView and override the zoom functions so that the rectangles got re-sized when the user zoomed, but that seems really complicated for something that should be simple! Please tell me a better way to do it?

I have been able to draw a map using 'MapActivity' class. Am unable to render 3D graphics on the Map. Is there any way to draw something on the foreground with the Map as the background?

i have a problem with my mapView. my app reads "some" gps points out of a file and i want to draw a route (drawing lines between the gps point). If my file contains many gps points, my app works really slow. i think its working slow, because i draw all overlays. now i want to check, whether a point is visible in my mapView or not. so i have to get the mapCenter and Lat/lon span (getLatitudeSpan,..) !? how and where must i save my points and how can i check all my points (after my mapCenter has changed for example). Shall I save my points in a list (in my Overlay class??) and iterate through every list item and check, wheter its visible or not?

I'm trying to draw some text onto an MapView on Android. The drawing of the text goes fine, but it's very hard to read the text because it's white with no black border (like the rest of the text that appears naturally on MapViews to denote cities, states, and countries). I can't seem to figure how to draw the text with a black border. This is the sort of code I'm using right now (this is just example code, found in one of my overlays):
@Override
public void draw(Canvas canvas, MapView mapView, boolean shadow) {
Paint textPaint = new Paint();
textPaint.setARGB(255, 255, 255, 255);
textPaint.setTextAlign(Paint.Align.CENTER);
textPaint.setTextSize(16);
textPaint.setTypeface(Typeface.DEFAULT_BOLD);
canvas.drawText("Some Text", 100, 100, textPaint);
super.draw(canvas, mapView, shadow);}

I am developing an application for the Parisian Metro. One of the functions is a map where you can click the metro stations and see what are the metro lines, and when are the next 4 trains on this station.
I have hence created a MapActivity and an ItemizedOverlay classes.
On my device it is working perfectly, but I am getting some logs from the users with a crash, and I really don't understand what's wrong.
My map activity adds ONE ItemizedOverlay that displays a blue dot for the current user location. This overlay also listens to onTap, which depending on the coordinates of the tap, will try to find metro stations (for which I know the lat/lon coordinates). This is working perfectly.
The stack trace of the crash is:
CODE:.....................
Sometimes it comes from different lines but it always finishes crashing at OverlayBunde.java:42
As is does not mention my code, I don't know what's wrong.
You can get the source code of the MapActivity and the the ItemizedOverlay: http://code.google.com/p/metroparis/source/browse/trunk/src/org/bicou/metro/
The activity class is ACarteStations and the overlay class is StationMetroMapOverlay.

Trying to solve my current problem of drawing an image on an Android MapView and then animate it to represent a moving object, I decided to try to just draw a raw ImageView at a GeoPoint on the map and then try and animate it from there.
This is the code I put in my map activity (extends MapActivity)'s onCreate method:
CODE:..............
Again, I'm just trying to draw the static icon and animate it from there. I can already do this with an ItemizedOverlay, but as far as I can tell, I can't animate the elements of an AnimatedOverlay the way that I can animate a view. Thus, using ImageView.
But the icon doesn't show up.

I am writing a application that needs to draw a "route" comprised of lots of GPS points (long+lat). The points are close together and don't follow roads, simply drawing a line between each point is ideal.
The current implementation I have is very slow as I am looping over all the GPS coordinates and creating a new Point and overlayitem in an itemized overlay. This takes around 20 seconds for it to load all of these points and draw them to the mapview. Is there a way in which I can construct a series of lines or point from the GPS coordinates and draw them onto the mapview?
Example of current implementation:

I have a MapActivity. If it's set to an appropriate location and zoom level to see traffic none is shown after it's first created until you interact with the map (click on it, drag, etc) at which point traffic shows up. Naturally I want traffic to show up without any user interaction after it loads but I've been unable to figure out how to trigger it. Any ideas?

Comparing a MapView as used in an app through Google Maps API against the Google Maps app, I found that the granularity of all elements, most visibly, street labels, in Google Maps is bigger than the street labels in MapView. This is on a Nexus One, presumably other devices show a similar behavior. I did not find any hint in the documentation how to dial this for a MapView.

I would like to further annotate the custom markers I have placed on a MapView (using ItemizedOverlay) by displaying a simple text label that appears for a particular item when the onTap event is fired.
This is a trivial exercise in the Google Maps JavaScript API and in MapKit on iPhone, but it is not obvious to me what the best or easiest way to do this is on Android.

I'm using the following to draw rounded-corner rectangles in my Android application and it seems to be working alright but with one minor problem:
CODE:.......
(Adding labels to the rectF's defined above follows) ...
The strange thing is that the two ends of the rectangle aren't rounded over the same. The left-size quarter circles are noticeably smaller than the ones on the right.
Anybody experienced anything similar? It's weird enough that I might change my mind about the round corners if I can't do anything about it.... And if I knew how to do a screen capture from my Android, I would.
The rectangles in question are 78 pixels wide and 48 tall, if that helps (and since ykatchou may be onto something).

I am trying to find the number of rectangles per sec in three different size rectangles. I did find it though. But the only problem is that I see all the rectangles after it ran the program completely. But I would like to have rectangles drawn, when I call canvas.drawRect(rec1,paint); function.
I am also looking to keep the old rectangles on the screen while new ones are drawn. I tried with lots of different options nothing worked. To display the rectangles. Can anybody show me the direction to which way to go?

How do I detect changes of boundaries and zooms in a map? Is there an event that is called whenever there is a drag or a zoom? I want to update the overlays when this happens with new data requested from a web server.

I have recently purchased Xolo Q1000 and i installed subway surfers. The game has a function to double tap for hover board. But when i double tap on the screen for the hoverboard the screen zooms in and out but I do not get a hover board.
My device is rooted but i have the original rom from the company.
The phone comes preinstalled with android 4.2.1
The double tap function has similar effect in the dialar screen as well
I presume it is a software glitch. Is there any fix for this.

So I'm loading images from a web service, but the size of the images are sometimes smaller or bigger than other images and the visualization looks silly when I put them in a ListView in android. I'd like to fix the size of my ImageView so that it only shows a portion of the image if it's larger than a preset amount. I've tried everything I can think of setting the setMaxWidth/setMaxHeight, setting the scale type to centerCrop, using ClipableDrawable wrapping my BitmapDrawable, setting using Drawable.setBounds(). I've tried setting in the XML and programmatically, but neither worked. I'm very surprised setting max width/height didn't do anything. Below is the XML I'm using ImageView definition in my layout file

I am currently developing a dictionary application with voice database. I would like to know about the current Android limitation on the file size. I am using a self-provided sqlite database ( > 50mb ) . I tested that once the built .apk size exceeds ~30mb the app will not be installed onto the simulator (INSTALL_FAILED_ INSUFFICIENT _STORAGE). Could anyone confirm me that if up until now there is no way to embed such large size files in a single apk ( Aimed to sell at Google Market without requiring user to download datafile afterwards). Also, is there a limitation of 1,048,576 bytes for a single file in the assets folder ?

Can somebody explain to me what makes up the installed application size? I have an apk that is about 8 MB, and often when I install I get the INSUFFICIENT_STORAGE error. I have around 25-30 MB free space on the phone. I'm doing debugging so I have to upload lots of new versions. If I uninstall the previous version then I can install the new version. The application manager claims that the app is taking up 22 MB. So back to the original question, how come the app is taking up 22 MB when it really only is 8 MB?

What is strange is after having installed it in the device (2.1 firmware) I checked the size of the apk when I uninstalled it from the device and surprisingly the apk size indicated is bigger even than the .so one. Is there any explaination of that?

My app downloads .png files to the sd card for later use. I kept getting OutOfMemoryErrors (if anyone could explain this too, that'd be great!) and so I took a look at the sizes of the images saved to the sd card, and they seem to be roughly double what they are on the server. Why is this, and how can I make them smaller?
public void onCreate(Bundle saved)
setContentView(R.layout.namedrxnscreen);
TextView t1 = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.rxn_text1);
TextView t2 = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.rxn_text2);
TextView t3 = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.rxn_text3);
TextView t4 = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.rxn_text4);
iv = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.rxn_image);

I want to have a elmenent with a 2 color border outline. I can do a single color outline using the element, but this only allows me to draw a single line. I tried using 2 elements within my but that didnt work either. Is there a way to either draw a shape within a shape or draw 2 lines around my shape (which has rounded corners btw).
