Android :: App For Sms & Mms Messaging?
Oct 2, 2010
1. is there a 'better' app for sms & mms messaging? like with more smiley faces? my boyfriend sends smileys and he has a blackberry bold.. but half the time I can't see them unless its a smiley I also have.
2. is there an app that supports blackberry messenger?
3. also, I used to have a palm pilot... and I loved their calendar program. I also loved how I could type everything in on the computer and sync it up to my palm pilot... blackberry never came out with anything like that. So I'm curious if there is a program that could do the same thing for android? type on computer program, sync it up to my htc aria.

Whats the scoop behind which one is really better? The stock messaging app or aftermarket apps (handcent and chomp). I use Handcent, and lately I have been finding it to be quite laggy and slow, even with cache cleared and all threads deleted. Is the only difference between stock and aftermarket, the fact that you can customize? I would much rather have a plain looking stock app that performs well, then a customizable aftermarket app that is slow. I am just looking for some opinions.

I think I know the answer already but it's worth asking again! Is there any way to set the stock messaging app so that you get a constant reminder that a text message has been received? I've missed quite a few already because the led light only flashes for a short time. I uninstalled handcent as I was unable to send or receive picture messages with it, and the app was slightly laggy when quite a few messages were stored. Looks like I'll have to go back to handcent if I want a constant flashing led as a reminder. Does chomp offer the same customization?

Coming from the LG Voyager, I really hate the stock Droid X messaging app. Are there any better messaging apps out there? This is my first smartphone/Android device so I'm new to the market.

75% of my phone use is attributed to text messaging. So I recently downloaded Handcent and I'm liking it a lot. It's a lot better than the bland default messaging application. I really like how customizable it is. My only gripes are that I wish I could change the physical Handcent icon itself and maybe rename it to "Messaging" or something, also wish the reminder notifications had a few more options. Other than that it's a great app. Any other good or better apps out there for text messaging?

I've just got a milestone and the Messaging app that comes with it only supports sms... unlike the droid's one which supports sms, msn and yahoo. Can somebody help me get the droid's Messaging app? Should I have any problems installing it on my milestone?

I'm sure some of you have had this problem, well hopefully, but my messaging apparently is suddenly going weird and shuting down randomly. And its hit or miss with receiving messages. Handcent is sorta messing up to. Not receiving the messages. It's receiving messages. Handcent is sorta messing up to. Not receiving the messages. It's showing up sometimes in the notification bar but then when I go into the app it dissappears most of the time. Please tell Mr there is a known fix for all of this.

I'm using an HTC Evo, running Android 2.2, and I recently downloaded ChompSMS and have it as my default messaging app. I was just curious if anyone knows if there is a way to have the native messaging icon be the icon to open Chomp SMS? Basically I'm being picky and I like the native icon better, but like the Chomp app

I use Handcent for my messaging. For the last two days I have been experiencing some slow messaging. By this I mean that when I send a message or receive a message, there is a delay before the message being sent or received pops up on my screen. I don't know why that is. Sometimes it is delayed for 15 seconds before showing on the screen. I have not done anything to cause this change. Otherwise the handcent has been working perfectly.

Found similar examples--not exactly what I need. I simply need to start messaging (SMS) and email intents from my app with their "to" fields already populated. So I need to send a number with the sms intent and an email address with the email intent.

I was a huge advocate for ebuddy, but the app doesn't support Froyo, and I'm using a 2.2 rom. So, I'm hoping one of you can recommend an instant messaging app to try out. I've tried a few and can't find one I like.
ebuddy: No froyo support
Meebo: Blows. Constant disconnects.
IM+: No longer supported
What I need:
1. AIM, Facebook, GChat, MSN
2. Remain signed in 24/7
3. Froyo support

I know there had been a buzz around push messaging. my client has a chat application that allows chat/collaboration on desktops on which i use AJAX. We are using PHP for this on server end.
What i have to develop a client for android. here i have to develop a system using Push Technology, since it is not expected when the next message come.
I cannot use polling (at specified time) since this will cause battery lag.

Got a T-mobile pulse with unlimited txt's and data.
When i type a txt message, as soon as i hit 4 txt,s in length a message flags us saying 'converting message to mms'. Which it promptly does. If i send the message it does indeed send it as an mms. Anything under 4 in length is sent as a txt message
I spoke to T-mobile and they said update software to fix it. Which i did. And it did not fix it.
Phoned them back and they did not have a clue.
Not being able to send long text messages without being charged mms service rate.

What is the recommended way to launch the messaging app (for sending an MMS message) via an intent? The following code works on my HTC Magic ... code..
... but it first launches the Resolver activity (com.android.internal.app.ResolverActivity), prompting the user to select the appropriate app (Email, Gmail, Messaging, Picasa). The user has to select Messaging before proceeding.
The only way I've found to bypass the resolver is to explicity set the desired component on the intent before starting the activity as follows:
intent.setClassName("com.android.mms", "com.android.mms.ui.ComposeMessageActivity");
However, I'm guessing this approach will not work on devices that have a customised UI, like the HTC Hero. Can someone confirm/deny?
I'm also struggling to find official documentation for the "address" and "sms_body" fields that can be supplied as extra data as per the above example. Is it expected that these will be supported by the default messaging app in future SDK versions and in customised UIs (like HTC's Sense UI)?

I'm curious as to how to setup a profile picture for myself on the phone.
Basically, in Messaging, I can see photos for other people, but "Me" just has the default Android icon.
Is there any way of setting a photo for that ("Me"). I suppose I can create a contact in my address book for myself, but I feel a bit silly doing that, lol. Surely there's a way of just setting a profile picture somewhere?
(My Google account has a profile pic, as does my Twitter etc - I thought it would have just grabbed it from tha.).

I've been working with Android for well over a year now, but I still have trouble determining when different types of messaging/communication between processes/threads should be used. I'm mainly talking about broadcasting Intents, using AIDL for services, using Handlers to send messages and socket communication.
Many of these tools can be used to accomplish similar tasks, but which is better suited to particular situations?

I installed handcent and really really like it but how do I stop the default messaging app from popping up with alerts for new texts. It keeps popping up on the top bar whenever I get a text from anyone even after accessing that text in Handcent. It's not that big a deal but I need to go into my messaging app and view it to get rid of that notification. Is there a way to stop the notifications for the messaging app? Thank you.

when I was using my Omnia, I noticed that when sending text messages it was the smartest phone I'd ever used. On Verizon, if you write a text message longer than 160 characters, it won't send any more than that to a non-Verizon subscriber. The Omnia inherently split excessively long text messages into separate messages, instead of what normal phones do, by sending the whole thing and hoping the server splits it for you.
The Droid acts like a dumbphone with both the stock SMS app as well as Handcent. I want it to split messages when they are longer than 160 characters, because I have a lot of friends that aren't Verizon members - or worse yet that it doesn't send the whole thing, Google Voice users. Is there a text messaging app that doesn't have this issue of sending long text messages to non-verizon subscribers?

I started using Handcent's SMS to manage my phone's messages and I really like it. But now I want to disable the standard messaging app that was included with my Evo because I get two notifications, I'd like to just get handcent's SMS. So how do I disable HTC's messaging app so that I can use Handcent's SMS only?

I have a new Samsung Captivate, I switched over from a Samsung Vibrant, not a drastic switch.
I have installed Handcent SMS installed. I have the Handcent Popup and Notifications set. I have disabled the default messaging app's Notifications and Auto-retrieve. I no longer get notifications from the default but still get a pop up from both Handcent and the default. I still receive both the default app pop up and the Handcent pop up. I never had this problem with my Vibrant. I can't find anyway to stop this and am at a standstill.

With this code: http://jtribe.blogspot.com/2008/12/sending-sms-using-android-intents....
I tried setting an Uri of sms:number, and changing the action to ACTION_SENDTO. But, it's not filled up.
I guess it's not supported? This is on both the dev phone (original firmware) and the emulator of the 1.0R2 SDK.

Is there a way for Chomp only to get the messages, and the standard one to stay blank?
