I have noticed that the magnetic flap of my droid pouch has activated the phone every time I insert or pull the phone in/out of the pouch. Even though, the screen will shut off as it supposes to be, but I just wonder will the magnetic will affect, or damage the phone, such as the GPS feature.

I have a HTC Desire and it fits nicely inside a flip case, held closed with a magnet. I am no scientist but a good friend of mine, who is a scientist, seems to think that a magnet could damage the phone!
I have heard that they can mess with the internal compas (i didnt even know i had one until yesterday) but what about the motor in the lens, will this be damaged being an electro magnetic motor?
I am most worried about the screen being effected by a magnetic field always being near (even on) it.
Has anyone had any experience of a HTC Desire being messed up with a magnet or can anyone reassure me that the 3 ebay phone case is phone friendly?

Should I be worried about magnets messing up my phone, or is that just an old wives tale?
I understand that one should not use a case with magnetic closure because it adversely affects the Moto Droid -I believe the concern is the GPS radio. When I first got the Droid I used an old Covertec Palm case, which has magnetic closure, to tide me over until I bought a new case. Did I fry the GPS radio? Google Maps cannot find my location and my SMobile security system cannot find me either. WeatherBug is on and off in knowing my location. Thoughts about magnets and Droid?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI may be purchasing a Droid soon. One thing that worries me a little is the GPS/Dock function that "activates" when you dock it in the media or car dock. From what I understand this triggers due to magnets that the Droid senses.
I use a leather money clip that holds like 10 cards then has a clip with a magnet in it to hold bills. (See picture).
My concern is that if I keep the Dtoid in my right pocket with my wallet it's going to activate and start draining the battery like crazy. As the phone would be too big to fit in the small "change" pocket on jeans that I used to use for my LG Voyager and previous phones it has me a little worried how I'm going to tote it around. I may buy one of those glasses cleaning clothes and wrap it in that, but the magnetic portion could still be an issue.
I originally purchased a holster off of ebay that was meant for an iPhone (seeing as they're about the same dimensions), but its clasp is magnetic and will randomly confuse the phone into thinking it's in car mode.I just got another case (this one) that has a velcro clasp and was marketed for the Droid. Well...it came in the mail today and my phone definitely doesn't fit in it.Has anyone found a decent holster that doesn't use a magnetic clasp? I found that verizon has one, has anyone tried it? I don't ever use the belt clip, so I'd like to get a case that the belt clip is removable.

But I got curious just now, so here is what happens when you put 1/4" cube neodymium magnets on certain spots on the device. If you already figured that this is how it works, good for you.
These pictures are terrible, yes. You can click on them to see them in their full-sized horror. I didn't make a point of being artistic here, I just want to show you what happens. And yes, that is a box of Sensodyne. It was on my bathroom vanity, which is the best-lit area of my house at nighttime.
This is where you want to put the magnet to activate the sensor.
But the polarity is the key to choosing which "dock" gets activated. I don't have a polarity indicator to tell me which pole is which, but suffice it to say that one pole activates multimedia, and the other activates car.
I tried this with 5mm diameter, 1mm thick neodymium disks, but they didn't work. That's the only other size I have besides 1" cubes which I'd be afraid to put by my phone though.
You may want to look into something like 5mm by 2mm or 10mm by 2mm or something. 1/4" cubes aren't very compact if you're looking to be thrifty and make your own dock. You could just slip a thin disk into your design and it'd be totally discreet. Hey, making your own dock or buying an el cheapo one and slipping in a 10 cent magnet sure beats buying a $30 one, doesn't it?
This also shows us that there may not be any more special docks to come, and if there will be, they won't be based on this technology. After all, both poles of the magnetic sensor have already been used.
I have noticed a rash of EMF "detectors" currently available for the iPhone 3GS only.
Does the Milestone/Droid series phones have the capability to detect EMF and if so does anyone know of a current app or one in development that will do this? I've searched the app store without finding a clear result.
I'm working on an application that will randomly point an arrow in a direction, and have that arrow maintain it's direction if the device is moved. All I want to do it get the magnetic field readings as degrees and I can do it from there. The problem I'm having is getting the magnetic field readings. I can't find any tutorials on it and the API demo on google's dev site uses deprecated code (figures, google's sample code is never n00b friendly).
At this point I've got this together but I don't know what I'm missing, all the examples I can find are using SensorListener which has onSensorChanged(int sensor, float[] values) but SensorEventListener does not support "float[] values"

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have been having problems with my G2x's this is the 4th G2x I've had. My first one had a short, second one would randomly flash when I didnt even have the camera on and the screen would flicker like crazy, third one gave me the black screen of death were it was just all black and the phone would not work at all. The fourth one I have now is constantly shutting off on me all the time. I called T-mobile and told them that IDK what the problem is... I don't DL anything crazy and I really love the G2x when it works could it possibly be the battery because that is the only thing that is the same with the phones. So they are sending me out a new battery. Fast forward four days battery still isn't here and I am having the same problems and occasionally have to take out the battery and put it back in so the phone will power on. This morning I noticed my phone did not charge at all. So I pull off the back and what do I see under the battery and small amount of moisture and the white water damage indicator is now RED!
My phone has never been in water or near water or in the rain hasnt even rained for weeks and weeks now. The thing is if it truly got wet wouldn't the white water damage indicator on the battery be red too? Because that one is still white. I called T-mobile and asked them and they said I would have to do an insurance exchange. I told them I am not trying to exchange the phone, but when my new battery comes in and if it doesnt solve the turning off problem I don't want to have to pay for a new phone when I never got my phone wet. The lady said well maybe when it gets humid but IDK. You will have to do an insurance exchange which is 130 for a phone I did not get wet. Experience this and never got there phone wet. Are there anymore indicators on the phone that would show maybe it didnt get wet like can I ask them to open the phone so they know I am not lying. I am getting sick of dealing with T-mobile now. I always have to fight with them about my rebates, getting phone replaced, bogus charges, ect... Now water damage for non-water damage phone.
Where exactly is this sticker on the eris? I was having a conversation about phones earlier with a friend and I couldn't seem to find mine?
View 27 Replies View RelatedI got my first smart phone on 15 July, a Droid X. Everything was OK till last week when it died. I took the dead phone to VZ and they examined it and said there was moisture damage. Seems like there are some places on the phone that turn red when exposed to moisture. Bottom line was they are replacing the phone, but I had to buy a new battery and sign up for the $US4.95 a month insurance.
I do live in Florida and it can get hot and humid in the summer here. So my question is just how much do you have to baby a phone like the DX?
I thought I was careful with mine. Did not every carry it with me in the swimming pool. Kept in a nice silicon case to protect from bumps, and had another old HP calculator case that I often kept it in for more protection. Never had anything happen like dropping a Coke on the DX.
The lady at VZ was kind of a bozo, she even wanted to over charge me for the battery; but some guy in a suit came out of the back room and said I was a preferred customer and gave me a discount. When I asked about buying a different case that would protect my phone from water (I have seen OEM water proof cases advertised on the internet) she said that was not necessary.
Do other peeps have "moisture" issues with their phones, and if so how do you deal with them? Now that I know where the red spots show up if there is moisture damage I will probably start checking them. But if smart phones are so fragile that I have to baby them so they last more than three months I may have to review my decision to buy one.
How hard is it to remove the water damage indicator from the back of the phone? What tools would I need?
View 32 Replies View RelatedSo as the title states my Droid has some major water damage, but after about 30 min of low heat in my oven and a few more hours of drying it now powers on. Problem it is stuck on the bootloader. So my question is do you guys think I screwed up whatever part of the phone that stores the ROM, does it need more dry time (this only happened about 4 hours ago), or should I just try reinstalling my ROMS off my SD card without waiting any longer? I'm planning on giving it another cycle of heat/dry time then reflashing everything but don't really want to go through all the hassle.

Will they accept it, or do I need to spend another ridiculous amount of money for the phone? I was going to take the phone back anyway for massive amounts of dropped calls and desktop wont rotate horizontally. You can't really tell it has been damaged, it just wont turn on. The water damage sticker is still red.

After putting the battery in the phone, the phone works.. It's just the touch screen part doesn't fully work. Everything on the touch screen is fine except for the home button, the clr button, the menu button, and the search button don't work. Usually when you press them they kind of vibrate but they don't know and they just don't press basically. Is there anyway to replace the screen?

I dropped my phone in a toilet (recently flushed thank god) in the Staten Island Ferry Terminal (see, nothing good comes of traveling to SI!) and grabbed it out as soon as I saw it. I had a plastic case on the back of it. Took it apart as soon as I got my wits about me. And no, I wasn't using it - It flew out of my backpack when I turned around.
It will turn on but has this odd boot up screen. I don't believe rice will get the water out of the inside, and I don't have a screw driver tiny enough. If I bring it to the Verizon store will they know it had water damage from the screen alone? It looks normal almost like the DOS blue screen of death sort. Also, the little tiny green sticker in the lower right hand corner that says VOID - is that a water damage indicator too? I don't recall ever caring what it was.
My eris water damage sticker is just light pink in color at the top of the sticker, but you can still see all the lines on the sticker. Would Verizon deny my insurance for this?

I own a motorola milestone, and I love it to pieces. However, I am finding that the leather case I have has a magnetic clasp which triggers the phone to enter into multimedia mode. This is very annoying, as I never plan to use this mode so I was wondering one of two things.
1. am I able to reassign the magnetic trigger from "open multimedia dock app" to "enter standby". Considering I just rooted the phone, i would imagine that I have the priveledges to do so, but I'm unaware of what level that control would be on and if I could manipulate it without bricking the phone.
2. am I able to completely remove this app? so that the magnetic trigger just does nothing?
Has anyone used those magnetic macro or optical zoom lenses you can attach to the camera lens?

I pressed *#0*#. There's nothing unusual on the Spica. The S' Magnetic Sensor Test Self Test says "PASS". However, under sensor, under MAGNETIC Sensor, it says "Need for calibration #". The # fluctuates from 0 to 3 (0, 1, 2, and 3). What does this mean? It says "Need for calibration" but I don't see any options to calibrate the magnetic sensor.
I've already tried the #8 motion in different axes & it didn't fix anything. Is this normal? Is the S supposed to say "Need for calibration" under the MAGNETIC Sensor section?

I've wanted a leather holster since I got the EVO, but could find one I like and fit the phone. Yesterday, I decided to purchase the HTC holster from Sprint ($29.99). Since then, my phone as rebooted at least 6 times this morning - kinda annoying. It's not an app 'cause I haven't downloaded anything in days, so I figured that maybe the magnets (which are right there by the back of the phone) are interupting something.
