Android :: Removing Some Permissions Of Already Compiled Applications?

Aug 2, 2010

There are so many apps in the market and I don't trust all of them. Is there a way to remove some permissions of the already compiled APK? It doesn't matter if I cannot sign it anymore with the original certificate of the developer. And is there also a way to add an error-handler into the .apk-file, so that the errors of the requested permissions will also be suppressed?

Android :: Broadcasts Receivers And Permissions In Two Applications?

Sep 15, 2010

I have two applications, one of which (B) implements a broadcast receiver. The application (A) which sends the broadcast, binds a permission to it which the receiver (B) shall possess. The problem is now: If I install the receiver (B) first and the sender (A) afterwards, the receiver will never receive the broadcast. I assume this happens because the installation of the receiver somewhere fails when it comes to the "uses permission" part of the manifest (because this permission is not yet registered/defined).

However, this issue should be resolved as soon as the sender (which defines the permission in the manifest) is installed, but unfortunately isn't. It does not even help to re-install the receiver. The only way to resolve the issue is to completely uninstall the receiver application and do a fresh install. Is this behaviour intended ("not a bug, a feature")?

Android :: Market Fail To List All Permissions Granted To Applications

Oct 7, 2010

When installing applications from android market some permissions are not listed to the user, but are granted to the application upon installation, including the notorious "Phone calls" permission. When installing locally through "Package installer" the full set of permissions is listed. That behavior may be observed with many applications one of which is 'net.jimblackler.newswidget' (no offense Jim - I hope it's true there's no bad publicity).

This bug was reported as issue #9365 [0] back in Jun 27, 2010 but has gone so far unnoticed, perhaps because android market is not part of AOSP, which is why I post here. I consider this a serious problem as it is misleading for users and reflects badly on application developers and the whole android echo system. Hopefully this will get the needed attention and treatment, especially after all the recent noise around applications security and privacy breaches.

Motorola Droid :: Superuser Permissions Blocked For Rooted Applications

Mar 26, 2010

I was messing around with my phone being bored and went into the superuser permissions app. I was looking at all the entries that were in there and I know that it's just a list of permissions you've allowed on your phone. Anyway I wanted to see what would happen if I clicked on one of them. Well it cleared it from the list and I just clicked on all of them so when I'm in the SU app there is nothing there. Now when I try and get into one of my apps that require permission it tells me it requires root and doesn't have permission. So it looks like I blocked all permissions for my rooted apps. The question is how do I get it back? I'm sure I can just reflash a nandroid backup I have but I was wondering if there is any other way?

Samsung Behold 2 :: Downloading Applications From Market

Mar 30, 2010

I have only had my phone for a few days and i'm starting to have some problems with downloading apps. At first I had no problems I downloaded 8 or 9 of them and they installed fine. Then I was not able to download anymore. Each one I tried to download said "download failed and did not install. When I looked at my status bar it showed 10 or 12 apps that did not download. So I did a factory reset and cleared everything out and started again. The same thing happens I get 5 or 6 and then the rest give my error saying not downloaded and not installed. So again I did a factory reset and tried again and came across the same prob. I got a few and then no more. I do not have a data plan yet. So I'm just using the wifi in my house. The ones that did not download i left them over night thinking they might get done by morning but no luck.

Samsung Captivate :: Internet Stops Upon Downloading Applications

Nov 3, 2010

I have been having 3G issues on my captivate for a while. I can browse the web just fine and email, text, mms all fine. But downloading apps or things that need continuous internet download (i.e. speed test) will start then stop very slowly. The 3G window in the status bar will then flash occasionally but primarily stay unlit. I've hoped that it would continue to download, but after leaving my phone with the screen off for over an hour with an app downloading (only 2mb) gone from 20kb downloaded to 50kb and my battery went from 80 to 30. This happens for every app I attempt to download over 3G (wifi is perfectly fine) no matter what the size. Any idea why it seems to put the download into the background. I'm currently running cognition mod v2.3b2. This has happened on all versions of cognition I've had. I'm pretty sure it happened while I had stock 2.1 also.

HTC Incredible :: Downloading Applications Via WiFi - Server Error Occurred?

Jun 25, 2010

I just got HTC Incredible, but am still using my blackberry storm and need to for another week or so - do not want to convert prior to the company moving to google mail. Anyhow, I managed to skip the activation and am playing with the phone on WiFi only - problem - I would love to play with some apps, but cannot figure how to get them to my phone! Googling it did not help me, and all I can see is what the apps are, not how to download them. Going into the "Market" app gives me "A server error occurred".

How the heck can I get some apps and play more with the phone prior to activating with Verizon. So far I am rather impressed with this device! Seems like the hardware/OS works very nice! Browsing, doing email some other things over WiFi is blazing fast, and in general the phone interface seems very nice and intuitive! Way better than by BB Storm! Sorry if the answers are out there - I just did not manage to find the right ones.

Is there any way to not grant these permissions and still get updates?

Android :: Reducing Permissions

Aug 30, 2010

I've been following the "Is there a way to request permissions from a user as you need them?" thread with a lot of interest, but even if someone is convinced to make the Android permissions system better, it doesn't do anything for right now.

So, I thought I'd start a thread for coming up with alternative ways to reduce the permissions your app needs.

My app absolutely needs internet access (it's useless without it), and it uses Google Maps extensively (it's the main activity), so I have the following :

CODE:.................

I want to be able to know if I have a network connection, hence the ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE. I also try to use GPS hence the "ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION", and if GPS is not available I try to find the user's location using something else hence "ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION" and of couse the "INTERNET" permission. I also use the "My Location' feature of Google Maps.

So... the question is : Is there a robust way to use Google Maps, and be able to send requests to my server without all those permissions (in a user friendly way) ?

I'm also experimenting with C2DM, so I have the following:

CODE:................

If I want to use C2DM, it seems I am stuck with those... Anybody know

Now... I also want to use the camera (optional) and vibrate (optional but most users will want it) so I have to add :

<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.CAMERA" /> <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.VIBRATE" />

Total 10 lines of permissions in the manifest.... AND this is AFTER removing 4 other permissions that a small percentage of users would have found very handy, AND not adding a few other features because of the permissions bloat they would have added

CALL_PHONE READ_CONTACTS GET_ACCOUNTS SEND_SMS

So... given all of this, is there a way to reduce the permissions I need any more than I already have? AND why do I need a total of 8 permissions just to ask my server for the data they want, and try to keep them current using C2DM? Surely those permissions could be reduced somehow.

Android :: Using Permissions Need To Set Four Levels

Jan 18, 2010

I'm currently reading the specs about Android's Security system and something is not clear on my mind... Can somebody explain me ? About the Permissions, it is possible to set four levels (Normal, Dangerous, Signature and SignatureOrSystem) The documentation is here : http://developer.android.com/reference/android/R.styleable.html#Andro...About the "Dangerous" level, it's written : "For example, any dangerous permissions requested by an application may be displayed to the user and require confirmation before proceeding, or some other approach may be taken to avoid the user automatically allowing the use of such facilities." What does "Some other approach may be taken..." means ? How does that work ? Is there any example?

Android :: Automatic Permissions In TMobile G1

Android :: XML - RPC Interfaces / Exception On Permissions

Mar 4, 2010

I have some well-debugged XML-RPC interfaces on a site that work wonderfully from both PHP and from JAVA. Using Eclipse I am able to write Java apps using either the Redstone or Apache XML-RPC libraries quite simply. These test cases using the 2 libraries utilize JavaSE-1.6 (jre6) libraries as well as one of the 2 xml-rpc libs referenced above.

My problem is making this work on Android. I have added ADT to my Eclipse setup and easily executed the HelloWorld test using a virtual 1.6 or 2.1 Android device - no problems. Whenever I go into the Build Path in Eclipse and add the external jars for either the apache or redstone XML-RPC libs my console goes wacky with a ton of the following:
Ignoring InnerClasses attribute for an anonymous inner class that doesn't come with an associated EnclosingMethod attribute. (This class was probably produced by a broken compiler.)

If I push ahead and debug the code when it actually ships off the XML request I get an exception out of the XML library on permissions of some sort. Why does this only happen in an "Android" project. These libraries seem to have no problem running in Non-Android standard java configs. Once we proof the ability to talk to our server we can proceed down the road of actually porting our app to Android.

id = android.provider.Settings.Secure.getString(getContentResolver(), android.provider.Settings.Secure.ANDROID_ID);
but that just produces "android_id" on my phone. I'm using a Nexus One and Android 2.1.
