I've done a bit of searching but haven't really turned up much.
Basically I just want to know if there's any apps available that will allow me to watch video files on my Desire over my home WiFi network.

I'm new to the Android OS having been a Symbian (2nd phone is a Nokia N97) and Windows Mobile user previously. My question regards a copy of Family Guy (Something, Something, Something, Dark Side) which I purchased yesterday. The standard DVD also comes with a digital copy on the DVD which, when inserted into the drive brings up a choice of transferring the file to my computer to be copied over to my Desire as either a iTunes file or a Windows Media Video (WMV).Ideally I want to avoid the iTunes route as currently I have no use for that program on my system so I would like to be able to use the WMV version. When I copied the file to my Desire, it didn't play and the phone didn't seem to recognise it. Can anyone please give me advice on how to play a WMV on my Desire?

Can anybody advice what is the recommended directory to store files generated by your application: audio files, video files or some images.
If the phone contains SD card, it is clear that files should be saved there, but if there is no any external storage. where would you recommend to save to?

I have a Samsung Galaxy I7500 using android 1.5. I extended my phone with a 16GB microSD. I copied a big music collection (around 800 files) into a folder on this SD. Now the problem is that the music player can't find all the files.
I know that there are several threads about android not finding music. The answers are usually that the library hasn't yet been updated or that the ID3 tags are not correct.
I have checked both.
Btw. I can play the files using ASTRO.
In my opinion it seems as if android can't build up a library with too many entries. If I rename the files or put them into different folders, songs disappear and reappear quite randomly.
Do you have any solutions? Is there a music player which doesn't use the native music players index of files?

I'm using the stock Android 2.1 gallery to view images. I have a large JPG image (approx 7000x7000 pixels) of bicycle route map for my city. I tried zooming and scrolling with the gallery image viewer, but it cannot zoom in close enough to read the map detail.
Is there a better image viewer app out there that is good for zooming and scrolling large JPG images?
I would like to use Google maps, but the bicycle route mode still does not work in the Android app.

So from what I can tell Media.insert Image is locked to heavy compression on all images. This includes when passing in the path to a photo in the filesystem. As a test I used a 3000x2000 pixel jpg which had been previously saved at maximum quality and was ~6MB. After passing the path to Media.insert Image, the resultant copy (still 3000x2000) is 623KB. I passed in another copy of the 3000x2000 image, this one compressed down to 393KB. After Media.insert Image, the image filesize is 492KB. I'm wondering if there's a way to specify the compression when images are saved by insert Image. I'm also wondering why this is recompressing jpgs, rather than simply copying them into DCIM. A side-effect of opening and re-compressing these images is that it imposes a rather low VM cap on what insert Image can handle. I'm getting out-of-memory errors when trying to pass the path of a 10 megapixel image.

I never used an android phone before and i'm thinking to get myself a samung galaxy, but before that I'd like to know a couple of things concerning video playback on android. First of all, is there any way to play DIVX and XVID on an android phone WITHOUT converting? Do you need some particular paid application from the market or you can do it with the default player? How much this application would cost?
Another question: lot of my movies are quite big in resolution (you know the normal size that you use for pc's). Is there any need of resizing the movie to let it play on an android phone? I used to have a samsung omnia (rip); winmo sucked badly but it can play any video at almost any resolution very smoothly with free players also.

What will be the best storage choice for an application with huge amount of mb in media? The application will not be in android market.
First choice was to use assets/ folder. At least, 160MB of audio is shipped with the application. When I moved all the media to the assets/ folder, I end up with:
"Conversion to Dalvik format failed: Unable to execute dex: null"
And reading: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2328 suggest me that maybe it's not such a good idea to ship all the media in an .apk file. I think that the problem has nothing to do with large .java files, as it arises when I copy the bunch of audio to assets/.
I was thinking in using the sd card storage. But, I don't want the user to accidentally remove the media files. I want it to be private, not accesible to possible deletions. So, another approach is to use the private storage and download the media in the application first run, or something like that.

From what I've been able to find, Android apps are sandboxed, and can only list, read, and write files within the application's data directory (e.g. /data/data/<pkgname>). but, what about an application that allows users to view photos on an SD card (or play music, etc)? Surely this must be possible. Does one have to write a Service Provider for this?

I'm trying to play a playlist I get using the MediaStore provider. However, when I try playing a playlist nothing happens. Can a MediaPlayer play a playlist (m3u file) and do I need to set the first track to play? This is my test code in the onCreate() method:
Uri uri = MediaStore.Audio.Playlists.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI;
if(uri == null) { Log.e("Uri = null");
} String[] projection = new String[] { MediaStore.Audio.Playlists._ID,
MediaStore.Audio.Playlists.NAME, MediaStore.Audio.Playlists.DATA };
Cursor c = managedQuery(uri, projection, null, null, null);
if(c == null) { Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(),
R.string.alarm_tone_picker_error, Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
return; } if(!c.moveToFirst()) { c.close();
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), R.string.alarm_tone_picker_no_music,
Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); return; } c.moveToFirst(); try {
MediaPlayer player = new MediaPlayer(); player.setDataSource(c.getString(2));
player.start(); } catch(Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); }
I have turned on every volume stream.

I have an app that displays a video using VideoView. The layout consists of a Clock and a VideoView laid out in a simple vertical LinearLayout. Here's my code snippet that I use:
VideoView mVideoView = new VideoView(this);
mVideoView.setVideoPath(myVideoURL);
mVideoView.requestFocus();
mVideoView.start();
Since the buffering of the video takes about 8-10 seconds, the layout comes up with the Clock, but the VideoView stays blank. What I want to achieve is this:
- Display an ImageView for the 10s while the video is buffering
- Detect when the video is ready to be played (onPrepared?)
- Show the Clock and VideoView and start the Video

I have to make a dedicated image viewer app for Android 2.x.
There are too many jpeg image files: about 2000~ jpegs, over 100MB.
I want access the image files with their file names,
but I couldn't find such an example.
By the way, is it okay to put many image files in /res/drawable folder?
I heard that the android application cannot be installed on sdcard and
the program repository is very small so 100MB app cannot be installed generally.
I found some examples which download the large data files on sdcard online,
but I cannot run a web server to host the data files,
and I must upload the fully packaged program on Android Market. (Should I build one apk file?)
What are the best practices for managing too many resource images (or something) in Android?

I'm developing an application that makes video stream to an internal network, so I need to broadcast to listeners devices (connected to this network), found an application called VPLAYER receiving video stream, but it performs HTTP, which makes the broadcast. So, I wonder if there is any player that receives video stream and run under the UDP or whether it is possible to develop an application that receives the video stream and pass to the player's native android.

I'm torn between which group to post this too, but since it is for an application I am working on, I guess I'll stick it here. So here we go. I have an application which downloads data onto the sdcard to be used by the application. Some of these files are sound or music files and the music player in android seems to parse these directories and add these files to the list. I'd like to somehow block or hide these files from the music player. Is there is a way to do this? I was thinking it may be possible to name my folder with a period at the beginning, since linux hides such files. I'm just not sure if that is going to hide it from the music player or if there is another way to handle this.

How do I transfer Windows Media videos to my HTC Evo? Specifically, digital copy that comes when you buy a Blu-Ray movie. The problem seems to be the codec. I used handbrake to when converting but when I tried it, phone said it couldn't play this video. No reason or error code.
