View 5 RepliesI used the the Lagfix app to "root" my captivate. so i'm wondering what's the difference between doing it this way vs. doing it through a computer or some other way? Also, how can install non-market apps now? Well I know how, but what's the easiest way to do it? is the an app market I can get?

I would like an Android Phone, which android phone would be the best one that ATT has? Also, which is the best one for ATT for rooting?
Im asking for my brother, as he has seen and loves my rooted Droid, but he is with ATT, likes them, was wondering what is a good android phone on ATT of the likes of the Droid/Droidx??
I've seen posts on how, but don't understand what rooting is. Been anxiously awaiting the first VZW android phones, so am now trying to quickly immerse myself.
View 46 Replies View RelatedAll I keep seeing is people asking for an app that allow screenshots without root. The only solution all have given is installing sdk which is a pain in the bum to do. I have another mini-solution until such an app is developed.
Both Open Home and Home++ have this feature built in. Only negative to it is, you won't be able to take a screenshot of your HTC Sense UI home screen or Android stock home screen only the open home or home++ screen. But for many who are like me and could not run the SDK correctly, this works just fine.
I have an EVO 4G, while running 2.1 I rooted the phone so i can thether. all works fine. My question is do I need to reflash to an original 2.1 rom in order to upgrade to 2.2 or higher. The reason I ask is when I try to upgrade the software through Sprint to 2.2 it crashes. So Im thinking it senses the phone has been rooted. If the answer is yes. I have 2 more questions. 1. Will the flash reset my entire phone reseting everything Ie contacts and such or will it just reset the android. And the other is where can you get an original virgin 2.1 or pos a 2.2 rom thats has not been messed with and is safe safe.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am sure this issue has been thrashed to death but it just isn't working for me and the comments I posted on the guide I was using yielded no responses. After a number of people convinced me to root my phone I used THIS GUIDE to try and root my phone.I am currently using an HTC Magic (Singtel, Singapore) running Android 1.5 with Sense UI (which you can download from the HTC website). So, my phone is completely unrooted, however, I have applied the HTC (official) Sense UI package. I'm not sure if this makes any difference to the settings or method I need to use. When I click on Backup recovery image I got the Failed message. So, I clicked on the hidden asterix and tried to flash the image but I got the same message again. So, essentially I am unable to root using the 1 click method (why is it called one click anyway?)I have looked for a comprehensive guide but wherever I go and whatever I try there seems to be something missing. The CyanogenMod guide was pretty good but it seemed like it expected you to know a few things along the way.

I've been researching the possibilities of rooting my Motorola Droid for some time now (against the strong recommendation that I don't from my girlfriend, who works for Best Buy as Mobile Rep); I want to root primarily to utilize the tethering capabilities of the rooted Droid (I'm a touring musician and it's always nice to have the web on the road)
Of all the information I've dug through, it seems there are only guides, FAQs, tutorials and walkthroughs for rooting Android on IBM PC via Windows. I'm on OSX user on a MacBook Pro.
I just bought an EVO and like the features however its just to bulky of a phone for me . So I am going to go with the HERO.
I was told by sprint that if I upgrade to the 2.1 with the HERO I may have issues, that it was not designed for this upgrade in mind. Should I stick with the previous release?
Another option is, should I root the phone ( which I have no idea what that is) so I can get the 2.2 version when it comes out or maybe stick with the 2.1 version and with the rooted phone it will work properly.
I'm so confused, I consider myself pretty tech savvy but coming from a BB I'm new to all of this. Any help would be appreciated. I am also concerned about battery life. I understand how to turn off all the unneccessary crap like Wi-Fi, GPS, Messenger, etc when not in use, but will rooting the phone or upgrading to 2.1 or 2.2 help with that issue as well.
is there a good app that can clear my phones cache without having to root my phone, a free app? i couldn't find one and is it bad to delete cache? dont i need it on my phone, at least some?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm a Linux user, so the idea of rooting the phone is one of the many reasons I picked up this phone. However, I've been reading the forums and searching around, and have yet to find anything about rooting *from* Linux. Ubuntu and Fedora find the Hero beautifully; I've had better response mounting this than some portable hds I own. But has anyone successfully tried rooting any Android phone from a Linux OS? I'd really rather not install Windows just to do this. I imagine Wine might help, but there's got to be a better way to access Linux-to-Linux than using Windows.

I'm willing to pay someone for their time for this: I need someone to walk me through the whole process of rooting my phone and then be able to move my downloaded apps onto my SD card.If someone is interested in helping, please let me know. I'm sure for a lot of you this is a pretty simple thing, but for myself, well I have two left hands.
Just wondering what I can expect to lose or notice that's different after rooting my wife's (and my, on Tuesday) Samsung Vibrant. I've been reading lots of threads, and some people have reported apps not working, things different, etc. The only thing I'm looking to apply right now is the lag fix, since the GPS will supposedly be fixed in next months Frodo 2.2.

Are these official Samsung versions? If so, why does Kies not offer to upgrade my phone if there are later versions? If not and I upgrade to a later firmware version:Which version should I upgrade to? Do I need to root the phone? What happens if Samsung release later versions - will there be a conflict etc? Will it affect any of the apps I currently have? Will there be a problem upgrading to v2.2 Froyo?

The reason i would like to upgrade the firmware is the lag - I can live with it, but if there is a solution I would rather not. If I could remove the lag it woulld be the perfect phone.
One thing I am not too keen on, is ending up in a similar situation to my jailbroken iphone - became a pain in the arse everytime a new version of the OS was released.

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhy do Android screenshot utilities only work on rooted devices? Linux distributions and desktop environments provide user-space screen capture tools. Why can't Android? I wonder what are the technical issues, if any, that prevent this. The only user-space procedure I am aware of, i.e. installing about 1 GB worth of development tools on a PC, hooking it to an Android device via USB, and disabling some of its funzionality (e.g. SD card access), is not user-friendly.
