Android : Rooting N Paid Apps - Benefits
Jun 21, 2010
Can someone tell me about the benefits of rooting? Also after rooting, can I see paid apps? I live in a country that doesnt show paid apps. Its like the only reason I would want to root my phone.

Yesterday before rooting my phone i bought DocsToGo 2.0. After buying the software (Last Night) I rooted my phone. I installed the stock sprint rom but with root access. Since then I went to market place and tried to re-download docstogo paid version but I can't find it on the market. I see the free version and I dl that but it comes back and tell me that i need to buy the full version. I am using the same email address that was used when purchasing the app. Does anyone know why I can not see a paid version of DocToGo. Also, I searched for logmein (free) and can't find that app as well.

I am rooting my desire on weds, i have done a backup of everything using mybackup pro. I will also do a complete copy of my sd card before rooting. I know i can restore my paid for apps using the backups, but will the market still authenticate my purchases when an update is available or will i encounter problems??? I have read about the "fingerprint" but not much for the desire. I just dont want to lose the apps i paid good money for (albeit not a lot )

I have just bought a N1 and was surprised when I realised I can only install free apps onto it (I live in Brazil). Is there a way of buying those apps from Brazil? I don't want to root the phone (for now).

I just wanted to know if there are any benefits of rooting without installing custom roms? Now i've seen many threads here listing many benefits but its not clear whether u get those extra features from the custom roms or just from being rooted. So i was to root my phone and then leave the stock rom on, what extra would i be able to do?

I am going to wait to root for a bit but ultimately it is something I think I want to do. I understand how to do it and the risks involved, but what I am not really clear on are the benefits. I know it lets me run certain applications that require root access. But which ones are really that great? I don't need to overclock it. Its fast enough and battery life is bad enough. I don't need tethering although access point capabilities might be cool to show off. So what kind of programs / capabilities would I really be seeing?

Before I get started rooting what would you say the main benefits are over stock 2.1? Just want to make sure it is worth it as my phone is working fine atm. A little extra speed is always nice but anything else?

What are the benefits to my D1 if I transfer all of my apps to the SD card? I once tried it, and immediately after my phone started to lag REALLY bad , so I put everything back on the internal memory.
I assume I did something wrong , and would like to know the correct way to do it and why I should.

I am under the impression that android apps can require other apps to be installed in other to operate. The main example I know is the zxing barCode scanner app, which gets used by a number of other apps. The zxing barcode app is free, but I was wondering what would happen if it wasn't?In particular, what would the user experience be like? How would they be notified, if at all, about the paid app requirement?

I believe I have been quite reasonable, patiently waiting for you to deploy the paid application solution. I adopted Android early, took many punches and setbacks each time you rolled out a new SDK making major changes to the API. Now I am frustrated with how you are handling this situation. Everyday more and more applications hit the market for "free", in effect watering down the market and reducing my chance of making money on your platform.Does this sound greedy? Perhaps, but this is the real world. If I can't support my development by selling my product, I can't feed my family. Looks like it is back to the iPhone and the new Blackberry store.

The X is my first Android phone, and I am loving it. Night and day difference from the Storm I had. I have installed some free apps from the market. I am, however, unable to install any paid apps. I have tried a couple different ones so far. One was Beautiful Widgets and the other was Tapa talk. After selecting the Buy Now button, it prompts you to log in to your Google account. I do this and then it asks what you want to sync, not sure why that comes up. But then after selecting next, it just goes right back to the app with the Buy Now option. Anyone else seen this that can tell me what I am doing wrong?

I have been looking around for a solution but didnt find one. I have some paid apps that I got on the Android Market. They were TERRIBLE. I uninstalled them and am now trying to get them to get off my "My Downloads" section of the android market. I know that free apps are supposed to go away after time but that isnt always happening. Anyone have any ideas besides clearing Market Cache? Tried that and didnt work.

Definately something to do with my google account but i have no idea what it could be especially that it worked yesterday. Anyone have any ideas because i really dont want to change my email address

I have a Vodafone NZ 'Google Experience' HTC Magic. This phone was released in NZ back in late July, but as of yet we still have no access to paid apps in the Android Market. It would appear we are not alone, as posts to the market help forum reveal similar concerns for the likes of Switzerland, Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Israel, Czech Republic and mainland China. Now in and of itself I can accept a delay while all the nuts and bolts of international tax laws etc are worked out, but what is particulalrly galling here is the total lack of information on what is going on.Locally, vodafone are polite but basically seem as much in the dark as I am. This seems strange given that Vodafone group obviously have a worldwide agreement with Google to market the Magic as a 'Google Experience' product.Google simply don't respond personally on the forum and the only help comes from forum long timers who link to a page on the market site that is completely out of date - it has had the same typos for months!
As far as I can work out, availability of paid apps to customers seems to be somehow coupled to whether developers in your country can submit paid apps to the market at large. I'm sure there is a reason for this, but it seems pretty weird, given that Google Checkout works in NZ already. If Google are serious about taking on the iPhone store, then they really need to address this urgently, crippling their users by only allowing distribution of paid apps in half a dozen (mostly European) markets is crazy - especially given the enormous potential of markets like China, which doesn't have the iPhone. The other worrying aspect is the lack of professionalism in the handling of this by whoever is responsible for the Market project. If Google wants to play with the big boys then they need to start behaving like grown-ups and take some lessons in customer service.

So I recently bought a Droid, and I haven't bought any apps yet, but I've been using the free trail of Eray, and I really like the functionality of it so I'm thinking of purchasing it. My question is, what happens when there is eventually an upgrade for an app you have paid for? Are those upgrades free, or do have to pay for the upgrades?

With the imminent arrival of the Magic I was wondering what impact this would have on both end users and developers who want to transfer their apps over, or may even have both handsets for whatever reason. Is there a licensing provision for it? A means via software? This will become more of an issue as the other new Android handsets are launched.

I'm totally new to the android system.i am borrowing the g1 from a buddy considering this over my current phone.there is no Sim inside but it was activated before me using it.(so its running off wifi).i see nothing but free apps and it tells me there is no content for paid apps.i know the phone is fully updated, but is this due to me not having a Sim inside?i didn't think that would make a difference.
