Android :: What App Should Use While Moto Droid Sits Idle On Desk
Jan 15, 2010
Generally while I'm at work my Droid sits on my desk, leaning up against my laptop. Usually I have it plugged in to the USB cable so it can charge while I'm using my computer.
I'm at my desk for approximately 4 hours out of the day.
What app should I be running while it sits there so I can see something more interesting than my finger prints reflecting back at me?

With the kickstand, the phone makes for a great desk clock when I'm just sitting at my desk. I was wondering if you could recommend other apps that would be useful while my phone is idle? A better desk clock, besides the stock HTC one? Weather? News ticker? etc.

I want the HTC Desk Clock Widget (the one with great weather animations, etc) on my Droid X. I was thinking it would be easy, but I'm guessing I'll have to "root" both devices. In lieu of that, does anyone know of a Desktop Clock app WITH weather that actually works properly on the Droid X. The one I purchased the other day (and since returned for refund) (from "Apps4Cause") was virtually non-functional.

I have an android tablet (I'm not really sure what brand it is, but on the back it says m706b) that does not boot anymore.... it just sits at the "loading..." screen. Can I factory reset the device somehow?

Anyone figure out how to get out working? Double tap home gives voice command and holding search gives voice search and no way to change default.

I've been running White Widow 4.3 and wanted to try out a new ROM. I've heard so many good things about xtrROM 3.03 that I decided to give it a shot. However, after installing the rom, my phone just sits at the boot screen. I've let it sit there for somewhere around 20 minutes and it just keeps looping the boot screen over and over. Has this ever happened to anyone else before? Or does anyone know what I should do to get this rom going?

So I'm loving 2.1, but Well, when I started up the desk clock application, I excepted to see some links to media and stuff, like on the Droid. Was I just assuming that was going to be there instead of JUST a clock, or am I missing something?

I have been using my Bionic as my alarm clock since I got it. I have a dock at home, and the display stays on all night when docked. I also periodically dock my phone while at work, which also keeps the display on.
I realize that the phones are meant to be used and they wouldn't build these features into these phones if they were bad for them... right?
My question is this: How many people dock their phones and use them as alarm clocks, and have you ever encountered any problems with prolonged use and the brightness or sharpness of the screens?
I am concerned that I am wearing out my display by keeping it on all night while I am asleep.

Micro usb used in the droid desk dock has a specific name or type? The usb plug used in it does not have the little locking tabs that are traditionally present in micro-usb plugs. The absence of them makes it really easy to remove the droid from the dock and I want to buy one to try to incorporate into another dock. I suppose I could always try to break off the tabs, but I would prefer to find an off the shelf solution since it already exists.

I tried doing the Airplane trick...I am not sure this is the 50% issue others have mentioned because when I go to view my battery statistics, it doesn't show the 2 lines of information like it did before (i.e, 50%), but my phone idle and cell standby are Both hanging around 36%...seems kind of high in my opinion.

I was curious why at home when I'm connect all the time with wireless that the wireless status would not display immediately when I unlock my phone.
So today I left my wireless settings page up. Then let the phone lock and sit idle. When I opened it sure enough the wireless had diconnected and as soon as it was unlocked began obtaining an IP from my network.
THIS IS NOT THE BEHAVIOR I'M LOOKING FOR!!
I like to have various apps running while at home and I want them to go through my home wireless not 3G.
This seems like something Verizon would probably prefer as well.
Is there some setting I'm missing?
It's not immediate when the phone locks it's after some amount of time .
Anyone else notices this?
I've noticed a lot of bugs but I can work around them, but this one now tops my list. What can I do to try to resolve this problem?

My Motorola Droid will turn on, but it will not go to my home. It will just stay on the start up screen (black background with white logo in the center).
Now this didn't happen until i decided i wanted the CyanogenMod on my phone. I used this tutorial: Full Update Guide - Motorola Droid - CyanogenMod Wiki.
So I started with the first step and I installed SPRecovery succesfully using RSDLite, but when it rebooted it wouldn't get to the home screen. Then on RSDLite it said "REBOOT MANUALLY". I waited longer to make sure it wouldn't turn on eventually but it didn't. I finally disconnected it and tried various things... to try and get it back to normal. Did i brick it? also my phone was already rooted.

Seeing as Motorola is locking down the Motorola Droid X and likely the Droid 2, what should I replace my Moto Droid with? I've been totally happy with the phone to the extent that I tell people it's the coolest thing I've ever owned in my entire life... that's 51 years for you youngsters. I'm of course on Verizon and will stay with Verizon. I've paid zero attention to any phones other than the Moto Droids. Alas, lockdown is not acceptable. So now I have to go through the whole learning process all over again.

I id a search, and the results were wide, varied and not to my point, so no I am asking the veterans.I would like to know how to initiate a text message on my Motorola droid. If I click the messaging icon on my home screen it takes me to gmail. if i open my phone and contacts, i get the email address and phone number displayed only, no option to text the desired contact.the only thing i seem to grasp is the call log. from there i can text or call again. seems like i can only text from call log, but if i have no call to tor from them in my log, and i want to text them, i do not know how. is there a good tutorial for texting and contacts? sorry if it seems like a dumb question, i just got my droid a couple hours ago. i am stokes because it was a sweet deal and i am not due to upgrade from my lame omnia for awhile. but i need to know how to text and initiate calls instead of just emailing everyone. the phone is sick sweet though.

Does anyone know of a better VPN app than the stock app for the Moto Droid?
A couple key features that woud make this a great application:
1) Ability to store the password (though not visible)
2) Ability to automatically redial when disconnected.
I hate having to retype my password everytime the network (verizion not work) bumps me off and it is anoying to have the vpn disconnect and not realize it until I haven't gotten any new messages for a while.

I had been using Barnacle with my Motorola Droid (upgraded to Froyo), and it connected to my iPad and laptop without any issues.Just tried it the other day, and I get a message stating "Baranacle requires 'su' to access the hardware! Please, make sure you have root access".The phone is obviously rooted (easy root), since I had been using Barnacle before.Any reason why it's not working now? what exactly IS 'su'?

Yesterday my Verizon Motorola droid was automatically updated from Android 2.1 to 2.2. I was informed that it had been done via text message. I was not consulted or warned, only informed after the fact. It does not cause any problem in my app. I used the getSDcardPath (syntax approx) rather than hard-coding /sdcard/data..... and I have not found any other conflicts.
How are Android updates handled on devices? Always done automatically, this instance of auto update was unusual, or what?
If it is always done automatically then we MUST incorporate all accommodations for future changes that are not backwards compatible just to keep our apps running on machines that they were designed to run on. (it is difficult to anticipate all future changes!)
Previous to this automatic update, I was thinking that we should incorporate all accommodations for future changes that are not backwards compatible so the app would run on future Android versions. (this option does not require knowledge of the future.)

Can anyone call the last number they dialed in less than 5 moves on Motorola Droid without having that contact set as a direct dial shortcut on their Home screen? This is after screen has timed out and phone shotcut is not already open. I currently have to>press power>swipe or use pattern>press phone>press call log> press phone icon next to name. If the answer is no, people really need to think twice when they say how the phone is so easy to use. If it can be done quicker, please show how.

I have owned my Droid since day 1 and I have been doing Android development, with ADB working, on my Windows 2003 Server laptop all this time. I'll try to be as detailed as possible. Things to note right off the bat: - Motorola Droid 2.1 - Windows Server 2003 laptop - ADB has worked perfectly with this for ~ 8 months My work gave me a HTC Evo to do some development on. I installed the HTC drivers, ADB worked fine, did my development and now I am done with the Evo. The problem is my Droid no longer works with ADB.
