Android :: Droid X And Droid 2 Phones Locked Down - Replace Moto Droid With
Jul 14, 2010
Seeing as Motorola is locking down the Motorola Droid X and likely the Droid 2, what should I replace my Moto Droid with? I've been totally happy with the phone to the extent that I tell people it's the coolest thing I've ever owned in my entire life... that's 51 years for you youngsters. I'm of course on Verizon and will stay with Verizon. I've paid zero attention to any phones other than the Moto Droids. Alas, lockdown is not acceptable. So now I have to go through the whole learning process all over again.

Jus a little background: I have a launch day Moto Droid. Still love it, but it does have some lag issues that are becoming increasingly annoying. I think the issues are caused by either the fact that I'm rooted running one of the first Froyo releases, the fact that the Swype keyboard isn't really meant for this phone, the dropping of the phone (which also cracked the screen, though that doesn't bother me) or some combination of the above. Regardless of the cause, I'm ready for a new phone.
I've been out of the loop, but since I started back in, I've noticed that Gingerbread is on the verge of being released and one of my biggest concerns is buying a new phone that's already outdated. Whatever phone I get, I want it to be able to handle Gingerbread with no problems.
I'm leaning towards the Droid 2, because I like having a qwerty keyboard plus Swype. Will the Droid 2 be OK with gingerbread? Or, should I wait until phones are released that were designed with gingerbread in mind? How lon 'til such phones will be released?

Some of you may remember when I posted about my cell phone contract being sold to AT&T from Verizon. Well, I am very close now to getting a new "comparable" phone from AT&T to replace my Moto Droid. The new phone that they will most likely be sending me is the HTC Aria. Anybody have any thoughts about this phone? Is it a good phone? Is it comparable to the Moto Droid? To be honest, I plan on switching back to Verizon after all this mess anyway. I am just curious (in the rare event that I might be stuck with the phone) as to whether or not this is a good replacement (even though nothing can replace my droid .... I love it so much).

I have a moto droid now and I am unhappy with it. It is way to bulky and I never use the pop out keyboard. I am thinking of getting an eris. Should I make the change to an eris? Does anyone think the eris will get 2.2? Should I just save up to get the incrediable?

I just did a little test and sat them side by side. the moto showed -83 and the inc showed -79. both fluctuated but the inc was consistently 2-4 lower than the droid. if you still have your moto, give it a try...

Hey Android experts -
First off, First Time poster, and long time lurker.
I am thinking about getting the moto droid, and I heard that you can sign into your gmail account and sync all your contacts, but I have a question.
What if I don't want my Gmail contacts to be syncd with the device, but I want to be able to check my gmail accounts, is that possible?
The reason that I am asking is because I have numerous, like 10s of thousand contacts, and I don't want them all on the phone.

Have you seen this? I wonder if this will actually come true:
Motorola Droid X May Already Be Replacing HTC Droid Incredible
According to an unconfirmed report, Verizon is now allowing customers who are getting impatient waiting for their Droid Incredible to be delivered to switch their pre-order to a Droid X.
After the Motorola model launches, the HTC one is supposedly going to be discontinued.

So my beloved Droid is finally starting to show her age. Part of the touch screen has failed on the very right side of the screen as can be seen here:
The phone is still fully functional other than this and appears to be one of the better units out there (runs perfectly stably with 1.2ghz ulv kernels, gets great battery life and has a bubbly keyboard).
Having this portion of the touch screen go out does cause a few major problems though:
-Search hardware button no longer works
-Can't use notification blind in landscape view
-Can't hit backspace on portrait on-screen keyboard
-Many software buttons (like the ones in maps) can't be used in portrait
I have already visited my local VZW store and was assured they have replacement Droid 1s in stock.

Took a ride on my motorcycle last night with Droid in clip on case on my pocket. Drove about 1 1/2 miles when I realized it had fallen out of its holder. I back tracked and found nothing. Then my wife and I took my truck and went along the same route-nothing. Then (at this point mainly worrying about all the data in it if someone had picked it up) I walked with a flashlight the whole route while looking off the side of the road-still nothing. This morning I decided to take my bicycle and give it another try. About 1 mile from my house I spotted the rubber protector that surrounds the screen still near the edge of the road. I got off the bike and found the main section in a hedge so I have the battery and sim card. About 30 ft further I found the screen folded over and crushed. So I guess the battery and card might be ok but the rest is trashed. This one is insured by Asurion with an $89. deductible. (I ran over my previous Droid with my riding mower just this last May and I had to pay full price for a new one as it was not insured). I started a claim online with Asurion and the Droids are on backorder according to the site. I did this last night and reported it lost and possibly then stolen. Now at least I have the pieces.Does anyone think I might have a chance to get it replaced at the Verizon store?

I am on my second defective Droid. My newest one has rebooted more than 10 times in less then 24 hours. I am going to take it back for a replacement again, however I am wondering if Bestbuy got a bad batch and maybe I should get a replacement from the Verizon store. Does anyone know if Verizon will replace it even though I got it at Bestbuy?

I am an avid motorcyclist and lifelong geek.
I am looking for a GPS for my motorcycle but find the TomTom Rider 2($400) and the Garmin Zumo ($600) to be too dumbed down for my taste.
I know I may want a lot in my wish list below, but believe the droid just might have what I need to do it all with one device as opposed to the phone, gps, ipod I am using now.
My thoughts on mounting would be to find a waterproof enclosure similar to below so I can do basic operations with a stylus and the majority of operations from voice commands.
*Negative comments about operating a motorcycle and a GPS will go unanswered. Please trust me that no one wants to ride safer than I do, and I never operate my current GPS while moving.
OK, here we go: Updated answers in RED
Can I use the voice search feature with a bluetooth headset? (even when stopped, searching for an address stinks with gloves on) YES
Does Google Navigation have an option to avoid unpaved roads? (My digiwalker sent me down a logging road once....never again.) NO
Does the Droid do A2DP? Its a delayed connection, needs work, but works.
Can I listen to music and navigation at the same time over bluetooth? Yes, Music is lowered or muted?
If I can, can I receive a call without interrupting navigation and have it mute/pause music? Music is paused, see below
How does Navigation behave when there is an incoming e-mail or Text message? See Vid below, call come to front and hides Nav, but you can hear Nav commands. Txt is icon at top of screen.
Can you create a loop/route with Google Navigation? (Motorcyclists tend to plan out scenic loops, because often riding is for pleasure and not for A to B driving.)Not currently
If so can these routes be shared with other Droids wirelessly? Not currently
Can you share locations wirelessly? (ie. I can share my destination to another person in my address book) Yes, With Latitude
Is there a weather layer for navigation, so I can zoom out to see an incoming storm and route myself around it? No/Not yet...
New Questions:
Can you use voice commands to search for and dial a contact, or voice dialing?
Notes pertaining to Motorcyclists:
-Will need a stylus that works on a capacitive screen through the enclosure.
-Cornering and bumps tends to activate vertical orientation, might need to stabilize/pivot mount.
-So long as you give the Nav time to download the entire route to the finish, GPS will work with now signal. Rerouting does not work outside coverage area.

this is just one more reason that the eris is better (IMO) than the moto droid.
and it makes sense that the nexus 1 screen is tied with the eris since they are both HTC *sigh* and of course the iphone beats all what a surprise ... heres the link:

My Motorola Droid will turn on, but it will not go to my home. It will just stay on the start up screen (black background with white logo in the center).
Now this didn't happen until i decided i wanted the CyanogenMod on my phone. I used this tutorial: Full Update Guide - Motorola Droid - CyanogenMod Wiki.
So I started with the first step and I installed SPRecovery succesfully using RSDLite, but when it rebooted it wouldn't get to the home screen. Then on RSDLite it said "REBOOT MANUALLY". I waited longer to make sure it wouldn't turn on eventually but it didn't. I finally disconnected it and tried various things... to try and get it back to normal. Did i brick it? also my phone was already rooted.
