Android :: Using Layout Includes With Layouts That Are Greedy - Want To Take Entire Screen Space
Jul 31, 2009
I would like to use an <include /> in my XML file to add a layout below a MapView(or any other greedy layout). I have been trying for a few hours now, and no luck so far. I was hoping someone could give me a hand.
Here is what my XML looks like now:
CODE:...................
Optimally, the include could be any sort of other layout. The goal here is to have the Google map on the top, and then have the included layout below it. If I include the content in the layout, such as replacing the <include /> tag with a <TextView /> then that works correctly, so I am thinking I am mis-using the include. A trip to hierarchy viewer shows that the included layout has no height. I have tried putting the include first, and using a RelativeLayout to position the map above the included layout, but I could not get that to work correctly (the included layout took the entire screen space, even though I explicitly said layout_height='wrap_content'

I'm creating a game where there's a screen that, for the most part, is shared by four different activites - but a key portion of the screen will be completely different, depending upon which activity is active. Basically, on the left will be an image of the player and along the bottom there will be a row of buttons (let's say for Armour, Weapons, Magic, Skills). This leaves the top-right portion, which will need to dynamically change to represent the button pressed. (So, one moment the top-right portion is the armour selection activity, and the next it's the weapon selection activity, and so on.)
Is this possible? Can I have a layout within a layout and dynamically point the nested layout at a (nested) layout.xml of my choosing? Or, am I looking at just duplicating most of the layout four times (for the four different activities?) Or, am I going to be looking at linking the four activities to a (the top-right) view component, and then having to dynamically construct all of *that* view's child views based on the currently active activity? Well, that's about as much sense as I can make this question make.

I am having a bit of trouble with my current application. With a button at the beginning of my app, I send out Intents for two activities, one gets a camera object, and starts a preview screen. On top of that, in a separate layout, there is an activity with a translucent view, which shows a resource image (the user is trying to get the image he is actually taking to align with the translucent image) and a couple of textviews displaying a target phone orientation as well as the user's current phone orientation.
when I update the text value of one of my text views in my onSensorChanged() field, the system constantly reallocates 1.22MB and garbage collects it. I can only assume that this is because it is redrawing the entire layout with the translucent image and the text fields, because if I remove the view containing the translucent image from the layout, my text field updates 10x quicker and I don't have ridiculous heap growing / garbage collecting. I am wondering how to go about getting the text fields to update without redrawing the entire surface. I am very new to UI design, and this code was written by someone else before I took over the project, so I don't understand much of what is going on in the custom view he wrote to take care of the translucent image -- called MyView. I will post the code for the layout as well as the MyView code below.................................

I am programatically adding custom views to a vertical LinearLayout, and I would like there to be some space between the views. I have tried adding: setPadding(0, 1, 0, 1) to my CustomView constructor, but this doesn't seem to have any effect. It was pointed out that I should use margins. Since I am dynamically adding views, I need to set the margins from code (not in xml). I believe the way to do this is below, but it isn't working.
public class MyView extends View {
public MyView (Context context) { super(context);
MarginLayoutParams params = new MarginLayoutParams(LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT); params.setMargins(0, 10, 0, 10); setLayoutParams(params);
I also tried using MarginLayoutParams as a parameter while adding the views to the Linear layout (as below). This also did not work:
MarginLayoutParams params = new MarginLayoutParams(linearLayout.getLayoutParams());
linearLayout.setMargins(0, 10, 0, 10); linearLayout.addView(view, params);

Im using a LinearLayout to put two buttons horizontally side-by-side, but I want to each button to size itself to use 50% of the horizontal space. I thought layout_weight of "1" for each button would do the trick, but maybe my layout_width needs to be changed?

supporting multiple screens (sizes and resolutions). I´ve searched not only this forum but many different websites and the android documentation but I´m probably doing a small mistake so things are not working properly.
Well, my main layout was designed with a HVGA screen, and it works great. When I try the same app on a WVGA, FWVGA, WQVGA or FWQVGA, I always get an unused space in the end of the layout because the screen ´s "heightnes" is proportionally bigger than HVGA´s.
So I consulted the documentation and decided to give a try on resource qualifiers, so I then created a nonsense UI and placed it on layout- large, created a new AVD using the WVGA skin and launched the app. Well, all I got was my old and not well stretched layout. The same happened to a FWVGA AVD.
This is the first problem. The second is: medium high density medium size screens and medium density large screens have the same resolution: how can I create a layout that is loaded for both, but not for (for example) medium size medium density or small size medium density screens?

(1) I have an issue with the following code:
getWindow().setFlags(WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN, WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN);
On my emulator this seems to work fine. The status bar disappears and the empty space is filled with the content view. However on my Nexus One this sometimes works and sometimes the empty space remains empty/black. I tried to counteract this, but my naive approach wasn't fruitful:

So through a weird assortment of events i managed to crack the screen on my Eris. But this is the trippy part, I didnt break the glass but the touch sensors underneath. So now i am unable to use the menu or home buttons and the entire left part of my screen and more. I am unable to unlock my device in anyway that i know(menu button, the slider). Is there any other way to unlock it? I now have 11 unread texts and 4 voicemails that I desperately want to view. Oh and I know some of you won't be happy about what I'm about to say but.... I took the leap to the moto droid. I had the chance to get it on a 1 year because I didnt get insurance and I went for it. I will really miss my Eris but the keyboard lag was just killing me.

What is the best way to properly handle screens resolution/sizes/types? I thought I would create the following resource folders: res/layout res/layout-800x480 res/layout-854x480.Does anyone know if this is the best way to handle specific layouts for specific screens?Doing it by resolution size?

I can't seem to rotate properly an image on the entire screen. The problem is that when the image rotates, you can see the background in some areas. I want the image to fill the screen also when it rotates. Here is the layout.I start the animation in onResume. As I said, the image rotates but there are background areas when it does rotate. I've tried using images much bigger than the screen but still it doesn't do what I want. I don't care that outer regions of the image are not visible. I just want the rotation to fill the screen. I guess ImageView sets its width and height initially and then, when it rotates, it uses those dimensions. Is there a better way to do this?

I'm having trouble with this layout - I need a ScrollView, then a LinearLayout with a button below that:
CODE:........
The scrollview pushes the linear layout under it off the screen. The only way I can get this to work is if I explicitly set the scrollview height in pixels to be less than the total height of the screen, but hardcoding a height isn't going to work on different devices. How can I do this?

I am new in android, i am having few problem in layout alignment. I have divide the screen into three layout,as header, body and footer. I am giving the height dynamically for the three layout in java file, so i need to give 12% of height to header and footer layout, and the remaining 75% i need to assign height to body layout. For that i have made the calculation as follow
first i am getting the height and width for the screen. With the help of the screen height i am getting the 12.5% height for header and footer layout
WindowManager w = getWindowManager(); Display d = w.getDefaultDisplay(); int totalwidth_screen = d.getWidth(); int totalheight_screen = d.getHeight();..................

Is there an app to get a landscape virtual keyboard that is shorter? The text box above the kb is strangely huge and some if not all of that space should just show the page you are entering the text into.
If it's ebuddy, it should show one line of text and let you see the last message sent to you. If it's on a web page, then omit the text box entirely, we can read what we are typing into the boxes on the page last I checked. Anyone know of anything? It's a major annoyance for me.

I have a layout that has just a ScrollView visible. It has a relative layout as its child. This layout has several other layouts (mainly text views) as its children. When the text is not big enough, the scroll view does not expand itself to fit the whole screen. Instead, it shows a gap at the bottom where the background shows. I tried setting fillViewPort=true on the ScrollView, but that just made the first child layout (RL1) to fill the screen.

The reason why I ask is that I may need to do a clean wipe and I don't want to have to waste nearly half an hour or so recreating the folders which store the apps that I want to be on each home screen every time I do a clean wipe to install a new Version of echoeROM.

Last night, I noticed there was a pink blob down in the lower left corner of the screen, it bothered me but wasnt too bad, the rest of the screen looked normal. I went to bed, and when I woke up this morning the ENTIRE screen was pink - apart from that little blob which is now black. The colours are completely ruined, red and white is now pink and it doesnt show yellow at all, the messaging icon etc. is now a dark orange. I just bought the phone on thursday so this is a major problem for me, it's not exactly cheap.
The problem is that I'm from Norway and the Nexus isnt sold here, I bought it from a guy who had bought a lot in the US and was reselling, through our version of eBay. The box was unopened and everything, so it had not been tampered with. The problem is that they maybe won't let me return it because of this, and if I want help I'd have to ship it to the US, no help to get for it here.

Is there a way, or an App that allows us to save the screen configurations /layouts , etc like on the Incredible?
For those that don't know, the Inc has preset themes and you can save whatever layouts, wallpaper setup you come up with. So you can switch whenever the mood strikes.
