I'm reworking some of my layouts to use Relative layout. I have some building blocks which I'd like to reuse. The problem I seems to have with the include of the layout and position other layouts out of this include. Example:
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height=wrap_content"
I need to implement a screen containing a list of blocks one below the other. Each block will contain mutiple superimpose elements (Images, text) for which the relative position needs to be specified with respect to the top left corner of the block.
For creating the list of blocks i have used listview. For each block i tried to use relative layout.This works ok when the phone is in landscape mode and absolute position is specified relative to left edge of the phone. But when the phone is put in the portrait mode the layout gets distorted.
1) What layout can be used for this scenario?
2) Can relative positions be specified in terms of percentage of screen width/height instead of pixels?
What is the main use of relative layout?

However if I give it the value android:layout_width="wrap_content" only a small seek control is displayed and if I set the value to fill_parent it overwrites the radio control. I would have thought there would be a mechanism to occupy the free space between the text and radio controls dynamically. how to make the onTouchEvent() work on the TableLayout and ImageButton views?
The purpose of the exercise was to have a drag method working over the relative layout,no
Maybe manipulating the layout_margin values? I was contemplating a transparent canvas overlay but haven't figured that out yet.

Here is how I would like it to work
I have the following layout in my xml file:

How do I make multiline EditText within a Relative Layout wrap the lines of text that were entered? I want the user to enter one line of text without allowing line breaks, but show it broken up by words into multiple lines inside a rather smallish, square EditText window.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs it true that if you have a ViewGroup, say a RadioGroup, you can't align items outside the group to ones inside the group (using toRightOf, alignTop, etc.) That is, does toRightOf, toLeftOf and the rest only work with views at the same hierarchy level? I was trying to label some vertical radio buttons today and find I can only align to the RadioGroup and not the buttons inside the group.
If I remove the RadioGroup, then I can align things OK. There are lots of workarounds, of course, so I'm not stuck. Just thought I'd ask and document. And, BTW, where is the hot sh*t resource editor for Android so I can bang out screens quickly like the iphone guys, using a visual interface designer that knows all these silly interactions? The tools I've seen so far have been toys.
If a RelativeLayout must be generated at run time, what are the equivalent API calls for the attributes set in the XML Layout editor? Take for example this very simple RelativeLayout that places the second ImageView to the right of the first ImageView:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/ android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="horizontal" android:background="@drawable/ bg_sunrise"
android:layout_gravity="center" android:gravity="center">
<ImageView android:id="@+id/ImageView01" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:src="@drawable/icon"></ ImageView>
<ImageView android:id="@+id/ImageView02" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_toRightOf="@id/ ImageView01" android:src="@drawable/icon"></ImageView> </RelativeLayout>
Of the many, variations I tried, I had the most hope for this one, but it didn't work either:
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
this.requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE);
RelativeLayout layout = new RelativeLayout(this);
layout.setLayoutParams( new ViewGroup.LayoutParams (
LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT, LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT ) );
ImageView imageView1 = new ImageView(this);
imageView1.setImageResource(R.drawable.icon);
imageView1.setAdjustViewBounds(true);
// set the ImageView bounds to match the Drawable's dimensions
RelativeLayout.LayoutParams params1 = new RelativeLayout.LayoutParams (LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT);
params1.addRule(RelativeLayout.ALIGN_PARENT_TOP); layout.addView(imageView1, params1);
ImageView imageView2 = new ImageView(this); imageView2.setImageResource(R.drawable.icon);
imageView2.setAdjustViewBounds(true); // set the ImageView bounds to match the Drawable's dimensions
RelativeLayout.LayoutParams params2 = new RelativeLayout.LayoutParams
(LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT);
params2.addRule(RelativeLayout.RIGHT_OF, imageView1.getId());
layout.addView(imageView2, params2); this.setContentView(layout); }
Can anyone offer the Java equivalent to the above XML? Can anyone explain why there is no attribute, getter/setter, or method for accessing the properties that can be set in XML? What is the most elegant solution for dynamically creating Layouts, Views, and other Resources on the Android platform when there is no Java programmatic equivalent?
I have problems getting some of my views aligned in a relative layout that I use inside a row of my listview.

I am using relative layout to superimpose one smaller image on top of a larger one. I want the bottom-right corner of the smaller image to coincide with B-R corner of the larger image. Im using margin parameters in my layout xml (specifying measurement in dips) but this doesnt seem to work for all devices and resolutions - in some cases the small image is shifted by 4-5px from the border. Is it possible to specify the position of the smaller image without pixel values? Ie with gravity or something?

I have a custom view that I had to write for a large scrollable image, as the images are larger than the size of the screen. Before, I had tried to do it by putting the image into a ScrollView but that of course didn't work. The view itself is within a RelativeLayout within the activity and at the bottom of the screen I have two buttons that are used for navigation and at the top a TextView with a caption for the activity (the main header is already being used here for instruction). In my below code, I've checked the Hierachy Viewer to confirm all the elements are loaded and in the Activity I can see the TextView, however it overlays the ZN5ScrollView area and below the image I just have a blank area of the size defined rather than my buttons. For the bottom navigation, the Hierachy Viewer is saying the absolute_y of the bottom navigation is 480. I'm wondering if anyone can help with my layout code here to get this working correctly? Bottom navigation is 50px high, ZN5ScrollView is 365px above the navigation, and the TextView takes up the rest of the area at the top
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having a bit of trouble with my current application. With a button at the beginning of my app, I send out Intents for two activities, one gets a camera object, and starts a preview screen. On top of that, in a separate layout, there is an activity with a translucent view, which shows a resource image (the user is trying to get the image he is actually taking to align with the translucent image) and a couple of textviews displaying a target phone orientation as well as the user's current phone orientation.
when I update the text value of one of my text views in my onSensorChanged() field, the system constantly reallocates 1.22MB and garbage collects it. I can only assume that this is because it is redrawing the entire layout with the translucent image and the text fields, because if I remove the view containing the translucent image from the layout, my text field updates 10x quicker and I don't have ridiculous heap growing / garbage collecting. I am wondering how to go about getting the text fields to update without redrawing the entire surface. I am very new to UI design, and this code was written by someone else before I took over the project, so I don't understand much of what is going on in the custom view he wrote to take care of the translucent image -- called MyView. I will post the code for the layout as well as the MyView code below.................................
I would like to use an <include /> in my XML file to add a layout below a MapView(or any other greedy layout). I have been trying for a few hours now, and no luck so far. I was hoping someone could give me a hand.
Here is what my XML looks like now:
CODE:...................
Optimally, the include could be any sort of other layout. The goal here is to have the Google map on the top, and then have the included layout below it. If I include the content in the layout, such as replacing the <include /> tag with a <TextView /> then that works correctly, so I am thinking I am mis-using the include. A trip to hierarchy viewer shows that the included layout has no height. I have tried putting the include first, and using a RelativeLayout to position the map above the included layout, but I could not get that to work correctly (the included layout took the entire screen space, even though I explicitly said layout_height='wrap_content'
I am trying to assign relative widths to columns in a ListView that is in a TabHost, using layout_weight as suggested here:Unfortunately, it seems to want to fit all the columns into the space that the button occupies, as opposed to the width of the screen. Or maybe there is another constraint that I do not understand.
