Android : "Unofficial" Phones That Work Well On AT&T 3G Frequencies?
Jun 26, 2010
I am thinking about skipping this round of iPhone and opting for an Android handset for use on AT&T.
I may wait for the Samsung Captivate, but am wary about how it will stack up, particularly when it comes to the feel of the touchscreen compared other handsets. (The sensitivity of the touchscreen on my 3GS is one of the biggest factors that has kept me from switching so far.)
My Question:
Aside from the Nexus One and Milestone (international version), what other high-end Android handsets can be used in one way or another on AT&T's 3G frequencies?
Would the Incredible, Evo, or Droid X support 850MHz and 1900MHz if they are SIM unlocked?
As I am still catching up when it comes to Android, due to lack of a selection of devices to play around with at AT&T.

I currently have a PC, Vista and I am looking to switch to a MAC possibly. My dilemma is I root all my phones and tablets, which would steer me away from a MAC if they weren't compatible.
Use MAC full time to root? Is it very different than a PC? & Would you recommend it even over a PC if you use a MAC?

I want to create an application that is similar to a phone call, where it produces sounds through the speaker and receives sounds through the mic. i want to know if i can have an access to control the speaker and the mic to produce and receive sounds simultaneously (like a regular phone call) in my application. i also want to know if it is possible to specify the range of frequencies of the produced and received sounds.

how to change the cell phone frequencies of a phone. I'm looking into a knock off 4G phone, but the frequencies run on 850mhz. I'm looking to switch it to Verizon's 700mhz 4G LTE network. What are the kernels or ROMs needed in order to do this? The phone has the hardware to support GSM and LTE. I may even test it out on my Droid Razr, as I've heard they have both but Verizon disabled the GSM function on it.

I've just got the x10 last week and was wondering which messenger app was good to use. I know BBM won't work outside of blackberry phones, so I went around searching what apps would work. I've found stuff like PingChat!, Kik, WhatsApp, TextOne...can you guys give me some advice as to which one is the most user-friendly and uses the least data? (I'm on a limited data plan). My main desire for a messenger app on the android is to send msgs to my friends internationally without paying for international text messaging! Please give me your opinions!

I thought It would be nice if people listed the applications that don't work for them, and then say what ROM they are using that It doesn't work on Bugless Beauty.

My desire is currently an orange branded handset.I'm going to be rooting fairly soon, but want to make sure on something first.Several people have said they have rooted orange branded handsets and installed custom Roms. Is there any way to know if a Rom will work before trying it?Plus how do you know that the Rom and radio version will not simlock the phone or knacker the WiFi?Do I just have to read the instructions very carefully on each Rom? Or is there another way?

Whenever I try to set minimum CPU frequencies higher than the default value, no matter what app I'm using or what kernel or Rom it just won't stick. Governors and maximum frequencies stick though.

I don't know if this has been done before but I've created a public Google map for all of you to report any 4G coverage. Hopefully it'll gain some steam.I've left it open for anyone to edit.

Since the HTC Tattoo doesn't support all the applications that are made for Android, I was thinking we could make a list, showing wich apps are working, and who isn't.
So if you download a program, can you be so nice to share your experiences in this thread? I will update this post after people (and myself) tests programs.
Downloads can be found at www.slideme.org

Does anyone know of an app that can test what frequencies are being used in the area? I'm trying to figure out if something is interfering with my wireless router, and if so what it is. I've got "WiFi analyzer", but that doesn't show anything other than wireless signals directly from routers, even though a cordless phone runs on the same basic frequency.
In other words, I'd like to find an app that shows what frequencies are present near my phone, including what my phone is putting out. Is that possible?

This is a general question that should be in everyone's mind who might want to root a phone or tablet or any Android or other mobile OS device:
Is this root exploit or bootloader going to be spyware and collect any and all data of mine (login credentials, keylog my every character, account/bank numbers, identity information, use your evil imagination)?
So, I searched this forum for key words like "trust root" "secure root" "security" and found nothing related to this topic.
So, how am I to trust ANY of the root exploits or bootloaders created and posted to this forum for ANY device?
Have any of the developers developed an audit process using firewall rules to ensure that a posted root exploit or bootloader does not attempt to keylog, report captured information to some obscure IP address (thief/hacker's machine of course)?
Do any of these root exploits or bootloaders or custom unofficial builds of entire android (like Cyanogenmod and the 3rd party variants) get Security Audited?
How am I to believe that the whole lot of you making the root exploits and bootloaders are not a big community of identity thieves and financial fraudsters?
Am I just supposed to trust you?

This is a minor rant, and I'm not attempting to pick on any one individual. I'm just going crazy reading a new thread every 5 minutes of someone discovering a new issue with their X after installing a leaked and of course UNOFFICIAL build of Froyo. I mean you've already been warned of the potential problems and risks you might face with installing the leaked build; so why take the chance of potentially bricking your phone? Either way, maybe the mods can create a separate Froyo sub-forum for the time being, until we finally see an official release.

Do the direct downloads work for you? They are on a different subdomain: http://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r3-windows.zip http://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r3-mac.zip [url]
I'd mirror them for you, but the license forbids redistribution.

I'm searching for android phones that can use video out to the tv for a research project. I'm considering the HTC Touch Pro.
Is there anything I have to do specifically to get the video out to work (for displaying my app on the tv)? or will the phone just display a running app on the tv without extra work?

I have google voice and use it for every phone call I make. I heard that there were issues with several gvoice updates, so I haven't updated google voice since 0.2.8 and it is working just fine- every call connects, no problems. Is it worth updating to the newest version of google voice with push? For those of you with 2.1 on your Eris- does google voice work for you?
