Android :: Turning Gps On - Off

Mar 8, 2009

Anybody nows a code/sample how to turn ON/OFF the GPS location provider *corretcly*. I have found the System.Settings provider and can set / change the corresponding setting, but it seems that the rest of the system does not recgnize the change. Is there a method to be called to notify the system about the settings update?

Android :: Unique Uses For Locale - Turning The Ringer Down - Turning GPS/Bluetooth/wifi

Nov 17, 2009

I see another thread on Locale, but it seems to be focused on it technical shortcomings. I thought a thread about how people are using this app would be helpful.

Now... I use Locale for the following:

- Turning the ringer down when I get to work (obviouse one)
- Turning GPS/Bluetooth/wifi on when I plug it in the phone (think car dock)
- Turn on Wifi when I get near my known hot spots.
- Turn off GPS/Bluetooth/wifi off and turn down brightness when my battery is low.

And the last one is a good one for me...

- I have a GV number. When I call my phone from that number, it turns the ringer volume all the way up and it turns on wifi and GPS. This is my "lost phone aid". It turns on the locating features so I can see where the phone is using iGoogle and Latitude, and I can hear the phone if it is "in the cushions" on vibrate.

Anyone else get creative with Locale?

Android :: Turning Off Screen

May 19, 2010

I'm writing a program that processes SensorEvents. It needs to keep running and keep processing events even when the user isn't directly working with their phone (i.e. when it's just sitting in their pocket). To make that work,I need to prevent the phone from turning off.On the other hand,I don't want to waste power unnecessarily, so I don't want to prevent the screen from turning off.Looking at the documentation, it seems that a WakeLock of type PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK should do exactly what I want. But it doesn't work: as soon as the screen turns off, my program stops running (or at least onSensorChanged() stops getting called). If I instead use a lock of type SCREEN_DIM_WAKE_LOCK, everything works as expected and my program keeps running. But then the screen stays on (although dimmed), which is far from ideal.

Android : Car Home Keeps Turning On

Nov 3, 2010

I don't think this has happened every time, but I've noticed that when I use navigation the phone continues to think its in the dock and will open up car home days after I've used it. It will randomly open up the car home screen, most recently it did this after ending a call, and the speakerphone will turn on whenever there's a call because I have the car dock speakerphone app. A battery pull seems to work some of the time but not all of the time, and really, I don't want to have to pull the battery every time I used navigation.Has anyone else had this problem? Any thoughts?

Android :: Wi-Fi Keeps Turning On And Locale Isn't Working

Jun 16, 2010

I've already read the issues with Locale, and that's sad, because I love the concept of the app. Even before I bought a smartphone and knew about Locale, I wished the existence of such a thing would exist. Hence my excitement when I got it was off the charts, but now, not so much. The situations aren't enabling and it's the same 'ole story of "Defaults" dicking everything up.

Can someone please make a Locale that works? (rhetorical question...).

Anyways, another frustration I've come across is that my Wi-Fi keeps turning on. Does anyone know what setting is causing this? I'm about to do a hard reset again and just say screw it.

Android :: Detect / Intercept Screen Turning Off

Nov 27, 2009

Is there any way where I can detect that the screen is about to turn off, so I can do some work *before* it happens?I need this to work around bug 3755: OpenGL apps sometimes crash when the screen gets turned off because they don't get surfaceDestroyed /surfaceCreated() events. Simply put, I need to shut down OpenGL before the phone has a chance to detach the GPU. The only events I seems to be getting when the screen turns off are onPause() and onWindowFocusChanged both of which turn up *after* the GPU detaches, by which time it's too late.

Android :: Turning Off The Sent Folder On Yahoo Does Not Work

Jan 20, 2010

This has been discussed elsewhere, but no solutions have been posted and some of the advice is flat wrong.

I crowdsourced this problem on my own forum/twitter, and this is what I've learned so far.

1. Connecting to Yahoo Mail is a simple procedure, and following the imap4/smtp directions here will work.

1b. However, step 1 (enter your username) MUST be with x@yahoo.com, not just X. The default the android offers will fail.

1c. If it doesn't load, or the folders don't load, power down and then back up. For people who find it "hangs" (little circle at top left keeps spinning)-- delete the account off of the android and set it back up.

I have tried this on literally dozens of phones, it works just fine.

But:

2. The multiple copies in the sent folder is a serious problem that I cannot fix. TURNING OFF THE SENT FOLDER ON YAHOO DOES NOT WORK-- and this is what amazes me; the Android is somehow able to override Yahoo mail and force copies into the sent box. If you send an email from your desktop, nothing is saved; but sent off the Android and the copies begin.

2b. The copies are generated each time the Android connects to Yahoo to check for mail (this is pull, not push), and whenever you send an email, and whenever you hit refresh. It seems to do it two copies at a time (why?)-- so if I send mail A, it generates two copies. When I send mail B, it generates 2 more copies of A, and 2 copies of B. When I send mail C, then we're up to 6 As, 4 Bs, 2 Cs, etc...

General :: Galaxy S4 Running Android 4.3 Keeps Turning Off?

Feb 19, 2014

I have a Galaxy S4 running android 4.3. Recently it's been randomly shutting off. I ride a motorcycle and most of the time when I get home the phone is off. If I try to turn it on it just goes into a reboot loop and the only way to stop it is to plug it into the charger. At first I thought maybe that the power button gets pressed somehow in my bike jacket pocket and hard shuts it down. But it keeps doing it.

Also I was using it whilst sitting in my house and it just randomly shut off. I'm not too sure whether it does it at a certain percentage or not or whether it only does it when a lot of memory is being used, which I doubt as I'm obviously not using it when it's in my pocket.

Another thing, and I don't know whether it's related or not, but when it shut off the other day whilst I was using it I thought If I took the battery out and back in would it let me boot it up without the need for a charger. But no it didn't work. I plugged it in and then when it came on the language had changed to Slovakian.

Looking on other posts about this some say it's a bad battery. I have AVG anitvirus so I doubt it's a virus although maybe one that isn't yet recognized by AVG? I would like to try and sort out the issue without factory resetting my phone. I have loads of apps and would take ages to back it all up and also the phone is rooted and that's difficult to do as well as install all my root only apps.
