I am new to android programming and have a strong keen interest to learn it. I want to write a program that fetches the data from a website, segregates it and displays it on the screen of the phone. The data could be grocery list from a supermarket or sale items in a mall. Could you please suggest as to how I can go ahead and start this.

Has anyone else noticed that the text on the mobile version of ESPN's website gets cut off on the Droid's browser? I feel like this is a relatively recent change, but I really couldn't say for sure.

I have been using the default browser on a droid X to access a website on my web-server for weeks but 3 days ago the website became unavailable (showing the "Web page not available" message). Every other domain on the internet seems to work just fine. I then found out that other websites hosted on my server could not load on the droid. I checked the Apache log files and determined that no inbound http connects were being received on my server.
So it seems like a connection was not being established between my droid X and my server using the default browser at all. Then I downloaded a Ping (icmp) app off the market and pinged my server IP and bang, a response. Then I pinged the domain name and received a quick response, meaning that both a connection was possible and that DNS was resolving correctly.
Remembering that Opera browsers use compression and route requests through their servers I thought this could bypass any gateway or proxy Verizon might have in place. The website loaded quickly and completely on the Opera Mini browser. I called Verizon technical support and got through (a bunch of ads) to a nice agent who could not identify any problems on his terminal. He helpfully navigated to my website on his droid X and it worked perfectly. I think he said that he was on the east coast so at least its working there. But there was nothing else he could do so...............

Is it possible to programmatically access the website that is currently displayed within the Android browser?
As far as I know the native Browser doesn't handle plugins (please correct me if I'm wrong), so I thought that reading the browser cache would be an option. Is there a more sophisticated way to get the currently displayed HTML?

I have seen few apps having exact same UI when you access the app through stand alone app or through their mobile website. What are the pros and cons of both approaches while developing the app?

Without going crazy, I've searched the forums and haven't found many topics to address this. Apologies in advance if such topics, in face, exist.I've had my Eris for nine months, and I've never really messed with the Gmail app/storage settings much. But I'm noticing that it's taking up around 50MB of storage on the phone. I have it set to sync 2 days. I have five labels that get synced. My Inbox, and one other label, are set to "Sync all;" the other three labels are set to "Sync 2 days."Any time I try to change the settings or how many days to sync (like changing everything to 2 days, or 1 day), it winds up eating more of my phone's internal storage, but for an app to use a third of the total storage seems a bit extreme to me. My Gmail app is showing 332KB, of which, 52KB is data and 280KB is the app. There is no option to clear the cache. I can Manage Space or Clear Data, though. My Gmail storage is showing 49.89MB, of which, 276KB is the application. There is no option to clear the cache or manage space, only clear the data.Also, while I'm on the topic, is there any reason for the discrepancy between how much space the Market says a given app occupies, versus what the phone says? Example: The Market says Maps uses 4MB, or so. My phone shows it occupying twice that much space. Facebook is allegedly 1.5MB in size, but it takes up four times as much space on the phone. There is no cache to clear, and I have everything disabled that can be disabled. What's using up so much space in these apps?

Is anyone else having a problem with their browser hanging to load a website and then the only thing that corrects it is restarting the phone? I have having zero issues with this phone except for this. And if not for this, I would probably rarely restart my phone. Sometimes I will pull up the browswer and the bar will fill with about 75% green and then just stop. I try to relaunch the browser, refresh and all of that good stuff to no avail. Once I restart the phone, everything is fine. I am using the stock browswer by the way. Is this a browswer problem? Should I try a different one? Or is it a phone/software problem?

I went to the same site via phone,computer, and Ipad...and my ipad in the chrome browser opened it up in a new tab preferred method. On computer using chrome opened in same tab which is ok. But my phone (moto x) just downloaded it. Even if i hold the link for menu, and click open in new tab. it opened a new tab Still just downloads and closes the new tab out. I also tried chrome beta with no luck. My phone doesn't tell me how to open it or what i needed to do next to see it after its downloaded either. (not intuitive enough) Finally saw in notification and clicked there to get a list of apps, which the browser is not listed. This PDF isn't something that I want to keep i just want to view it. and then close the page /tab and be on my way.
Lastly it downloads this file to my phone. How does one find where it put the bogus file that i didn't want to save in the first place, so i can delete it?

is there any way to block this and make it only go to the web version or atleast hide the fact from the internet that I am on a mobile device?

I had recently switched over from HTC's stock browser to Opera Mobile browser and I'm loving it. It's much smoother and just feels better but something that was really well done in the stock browser is Google's site; really easy to use and looks and feels great. However, in Opera Mobile, it's a really bad, watered-down version that just looks ugly. Is there a way to get the good Google site to work on Opera Mobile?

I wanted to go over a few things with everyone. Don't any of you take this the wrong way as I am just writing this to try and help everyone new to the scene.
When I first got into Android I had a G1, that was a little over a year ago. I used it stock for about 2 months and then started going to a site called xda developers. Some of you probably know about it, for those who don't it is a site that focuses on developing and hacking WinMo and Android. I learned a ton of stuff there, but at first it was SCARY, so much information and so many new technical terms I had never heard of before. I took my time reading things and asking people questions for about 2 weeks and when I was finally confident in myself I rooted my G1. It took me like 2+ hours to do it, I installed a new Recovery, flashed a new SPL and Radio, I even got a Sense UI ROM installed on it. It felt great.
Now here we are with a much higher spec'd phone, the Droid, and it has attracted a TON of new users. It is great because now Android is evolving faster then it ever has, and we are getting tons of new developers creating some amazing stuff. It has all happened so fast and a lot of you are trying to learn everything as quickly as possible. The Sholes SMUpdater app has made all of this VERY easy for anyone to do, but the problem with this is that now when something goes wrong you have no idea how to fix it. When you want to do some modifications that involve ADB or Terminal Emulator you have no knowledge on how they work. By skipping all the hard parts you have basically shorted yourself on TONS of knowledge which, to me, is sort of a requirement to rooting/rom flashing.
Now I agree that SMUpdater is a great tool to save time from having to learn everything, and it makes it easy to get the newest Sholes ROM. But there is SOOO much more to Android hacking/development then Sholes. When you want to try something new and different then what will you do? This is why I HIGHLY recommend that everyone does some heavy researching, take a weekend, or some blocks of free time, and read. Read until you can't see straight. Let it all sink in, and practice practice practice. I promise you will become such a better user, you will understand what is going on with the system.
If you don't study and learn, then what happens when something breaks? You can't always expect someone on a forum to come to your rescue. Of course there will always be things that happen which require some really advanced users to fix, and even I have t ask for help from time to time. But to not learn even the basics is just absurd, it hurts you and it hurts the community because we have to spend all our time fixing very basic and simple problems.
I hope no one here took offense to this because I am doing this to really help everyone here out. The more we all know then the more we can do.

I am developing a mobile application that involves complex image processing operations. The app is designed in Java while the core image processing ops are implemented in native code, and compiled using the Android NDK.Now, I know that native code will *not* yield any significant performance improvement over Java code, and that the NDK purpose is only to support re-use of code libs (or to quickly integrate legacy code).are there any resources/tips-n-tricks/white papers/ samples on optimizing image processing algorithms for Android? To be even more specific, I am looking out for optimizing memory operations (cache misses, memory stalls, etc.). I profiled my application code and came to the conclusion that memory issues are causing the *maximum* performance penalty. (Nothing surprising over there, it is expected, but just verified with profile data as well).

I have been trying to optimize my single thread app which loads a bunch of tiles that makeup a large bitmap.The app was becoming very sluggish when it would load the new tiles into system memory.I'm now looking trying to use Async Tasks for this purpose. The app detects which tile is in the top left in a method called by onDraw, creates a string that contains the path of the bitmap in the Assets folder, and then checks to see if the bitmap is null before drawing. If it is null, it will load it into memory. My idea was to process the bitmap in DoBackground, and in postExecute trigger a view invalidate to display the async loaded bitmap. Few questions:
1.) can i execute my aSync task for each bitmap? (this statement: new myAsyncTaskManager().execute(bitmapPath); if not, what is the best way to go about it since the only thing aSync will do is just load bitmaps into memory?
2.) Is it possible to set the priority aSyncTask if the bitmaps load too slow?
3.) Is there a better way to go about this? im certain it is the bitmap loading, and not the canvas drawing that slows down the app.
My temporary aSync code:
private class myAsyncTaskManager extends AsyncTask<String, Void, String> {
@Override
protected String doInBackground(String... bitmapPath) {
Log.e("sys","i ran using aTask");
try {
bitmapArray[rectBeingDrawn] = BitmapFactory.decodeStream(assetManager.open(imagePathToLoad));
} catch (IOException e) {
// TODO Auto-generated catch block
e.printStackTrace();
} return null;
}
@Override
protected void onPostExecute(String result) {
// execution of result of Long time consuming operation
mCampusMap.invalidate()

I have list view with fairly complex list view items consisting of several image views, several text views, progress bars, etc. Depending on the state of the item some of these elements can be show and some are hidden. I understand that listview recycles views. Right now I am dealing with slow listview scrolling especially on lower powered devices. What's the best way to deal with this problem?
I already optimized each list item view as much as I could. Now I am facing with what's the best? Use one single view with many children for all items and hide and show various children depending on the item state. This way I do not inflate each item view as list is being scrolled but need to show and hide constantly various child views.
Another approach is to build item view dynamically each time view is requested in the adapter getView method. In this case I can only add at run time those elements that are truly needed for current item state but this requires inflating item view every time.
Finally the third approach is most extreme is to have one custom view and draw everything myself. This of cause requires a lot of work.

I have the Optimus 2X, which seems to struggle playing flash videos that are higher than 480p, yet the Motorola Atrix which also uses the Tegra 2 SoC manages to play 720p flash videos smoothly.
Could this be caused by LG not optimizing the software properly? Would a custom ROM possibly fix this problem?

This is my first attempt to write applications on a mobile platform but i hope that my experience in programming will help.I have in mind the "Better, Faster, Lighter Java" book, but will this be "the" answer to my question? Are there any tips specific for the Android Platform that will allow me to build lightweight applications?
