Android :: Tab Host - Property In Manifest For Search Activity
Aug 25, 2010
I have a tab host with two tabs. I want one of those tabs to be a search screen. The content for the tab is a ListActivity. I'm pulling the content from a web service. My problem is, when I execute the search a new intent is pushed onto the screen. I've used the android:launchMode="singleTop" property in my manifest for the search activity. What that seems to have done is, once the new intent is pushed on top of the TabActivity, every time I run the search it reuses that intent. But I want the already existing intent which is set as the tab's content to be the one it uses.

I create my Network provider and I want to start Activity from it. Is it necessary to create separate Activity with Manifest and then launch it using startActivity? Can I launch unregistered Activity directly from my provider?

In my thread I create an inner activity 'B' at one point in order to launch another activity for result. I need to declare this in my Android manifest file but can not work out what the name of it is as the standard ".B" does not work as it says that activity does not exist. How can I declare this activity?

I have a launched android application that works fine most of the time. However 1 in about 1000+ runs I get an android.content.ActivityNotFoundException: Unable to find explicit activity class exception. The activity is declared in my manifest and I've never seen it crash myself. It is declared like this...
CODE:..........
The crash reports show it failing on all OS's from 1.5 to 2.1.

I want to create tabs without extending TabActivity. (The reason is that TabActivity cannot handle a custom titlebar as it seems). I have public class startTab extends Activity I read somewhere that I have to use a LocalActivityManager, I assume that I am missing something there. Anyone an idea?

I just created a simple application, that starts the Dial Activity and place a call. I did not provide any permission in the manifest file to start a call, but still the call activity starts. I also checked the AndroidManifest.xml file, there is no permission added, still the activity starts.

I am trying to make an Accordian control where each section would have its own view accompanied with its own activity. With the TabHost I can add tabs based on Intents and it is this behavior I am trying to understand how to use. So given an intent or an activity how can i get the view?

Here's the deal: I have an Android application that needs to call a web service every X seconds (currently 60 seconds). This application has multiple tabs and these tabs all need to interact with the data themselves. One is a MapView, one is a ListView and then the third is irrelevant but will need to also get some global data eventually. The issue is that I want my main activity to have a thread that runs in the background, gets the results and then instructs both child activities in the TabHost to update themselves with the latest data. Also, when the user clicks on the tabs and the onCreate/onResume activities fire, I would also like to force a redraw by getting the latest data from the main activity. I'm really at a loss here. I've tried this with a service and some ghetto static methods to pass an instance of the Activities to the Service to call specific functions to update their views whenever the timer fired, but the slowdowns were pretty bad and the code was just ugly ugly ugly.
So I implemented it as a timer-driven thread in the tabhost activity and then I have timer-driven threads in each child activity that then grab the data (in a synchronized fashion) and update their map/list. It's much faster but still feels slightly hack-ish, especially the part where I'm calling a custom function in the parent activity like so:
((MainActivity)getParent()).getNearbyMatches();
This adds an element of strong coupling that I'm not entirely thrilled with, but from a performance standpoint it's much better than it was. I appreciate the answers that have already been given and will do a bit of research on the content provider front but I'm not sure I want to go back to the service model.

I have a package with two activities
1. A main activity 2. A search activity
The search activity is invoked by a search suggestion provider in two possible ways
1. By clicking directly on a suggestion invoking the search activity through a VIEW action 2. By clicking on the explicit search icon invoking the activity through SEARCH action
If it is invoked through SEARCH I stay on the search activity and show some text to the user. Now when I click the back button I go back CORRECTLY to the home page.
ODD Behaviour: However if I came to the search activity through the VIEW, I invoke a browser activity and call finish() on the search activity. Now I have the browser in my view. If I now go back I would expect to go back to teh device home page. But from now where the "main activity" is showing up.
I see in the logcat a message from ActivityManager indicating
moveTaskToBack: 8
I have tried various flags to invoke the browser activity the tried flags include new task previous is top and I have also tried both a singleTop and otherwise with the SearchActivity as well. Same end result.

However, when I use search from another activity (ACTIVITY_2..x) by implementing onNewIntent and forward the query string to my Search_Activity.class (ACTIVITY_1) it always pauses ACTIVITY_2 first and then goes to onCreate() of ACTIVITY_2..................

The 1.5 AVD doesn't seem to follow the documentation in: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/app/SearchManager.html
which says it's enough to call onSearchRequested() to call the search activity. I need to call startSearch() to make it work. However, when I check the source code of Activity.java, onSearchRequested() does call startSearch().
This works in 1.6.
Is this a bug in 1.5, or did I miss something?

Because Java uses object references and not objects themselves, what prevents me from using setTag() to tag a view with an entire object instead of an object's property? Is it just the attribute lookup time when trying to resolve one of the attributes after the getTag() call or is there any other specific thing I should be concerned about?
As for my specific problem, I am using a custom listview that has an imageview and a textview. Initially I bind the listview to a custom adapter to fetch some xml data and then use certain tags inside each item's xml to populate my listview. So the "entire object" I was referring to was the parsed version of the entire XML of an item...

I would like to have multiple property files checked in to my project that each define the same properties but for different environments. For instance, a development one and an operational one that each point to a different server.
Ex. myapp.properties.dev
-> server.host=1.2.3.4
-> server.port=8080
myapp.properties.ops
-> server.host=5.6.7.8
-> server.port=8081
I would like to have some way when building my android project to an apk to specify which property file to include and rename it to just myapp. properties.
