Android :: ActivityNotFoundException For An Activity Declared In Manifest.xml
Jul 5, 2010
I have a launched android application that works fine most of the time. However 1 in about 1000+ runs I get an android.content.ActivityNotFoundException: Unable to find explicit activity class exception. The activity is declared in my manifest and I've never seen it crash myself. It is declared like this...
CODE:..........
The crash reports show it failing on all OS's from 1.5 to 2.1.

I have some code that starts another activity based on a menu item selection:
..........
I've spent quite a bit of time on this and am inclined to file a bug report at this point. I can see a reference to the allegedly missing class in the classes.dex file inside the APK and the code works properly in the emulator. I haven't been able to find anything like this, so if there is, an RTFM pointer will be humbly accepted.

I am getting this exception while I am trying to call an activity from another one.. .The complete exception is android.content.ActivityNotFoundException:Unable to find explicit activity class {com.x.y/com.x.y.class};
I am doing an intent.setClass("com.x.y","com.x.y.className") where className is the name of my activity class and com.x.y is the package it resides in.
My AndroidManifest.xml has the following content:

The JavaDoc of Context's public abstract void startActivity (Intent intent) said:
This method throws ActivityNotFoundException if there was no Activity found to run the given Intent.
But when I look at the android source code, it does not catch ActivityNotFoundException.
For example in AlarmClock.java:
CODE:..................
what is the code which handles the case when there is no activity for that intent?

I am trying to start a new activity from a menu action, as follows:
CODE:.............
The class exists, and has the OnCreate method over-ridden, but whenever I try to perform the action in the simulator I get an ActivityNotFoundException raised. I have looked through the documents and as far as I can read, I do not need to create an Intent in the manifest.xml for this to work.

I create my Network provider and I want to start Activity from it. Is it necessary to create separate Activity with Manifest and then launch it using startActivity? Can I launch unregistered Activity directly from my provider?

In my thread I create an inner activity 'B' at one point in order to launch another activity for result. I need to declare this in my Android manifest file but can not work out what the name of it is as the standard ".B" does not work as it says that activity does not exist. How can I declare this activity?

I have a tab host with two tabs. I want one of those tabs to be a search screen. The content for the tab is a ListActivity. I'm pulling the content from a web service. My problem is, when I execute the search a new intent is pushed onto the screen. I've used the android:launchMode="singleTop" property in my manifest for the search activity. What that seems to have done is, once the new intent is pushed on top of the TabActivity, every time I run the search it reuses that intent. But I want the already existing intent which is set as the tab's content to be the one it uses.

I just created a simple application, that starts the Dial Activity and place a call. I did not provide any permission in the manifest file to start a call, but still the call activity starts. I also checked the AndroidManifest.xml file, there is no permission added, still the activity starts.

According to the doc, if the intent in startActivity(intent) is not found, there will be an exception raised. Therefore I use a try/catch block. However, even if I use a random string as the intent, the promised exception does not occur.Instead I see a dialog that says: "No application can perform this function". I also get the same dialog if the intent is valid (picked up by an app) but apparently doesn't want to act when the extras are not what the app expects (e.g. my earlier question about Intent.ACTION_SEND and mime types). I am using the 1.5_r2 SDK on an AVD running 1.5, with the app running at version 1.1 (sdk=2). Is this a doc error, a bug or am I misunderstanding something? Can I simply delete the try/catch block?

However, I am looking at logcat, and when I share an image from the camera application, it sends this exact same intent. Not sure what I'm missing here.

I am having a static method .In the method when I decalare a variable , it was showing an error in eclipse saying that the variable should be decalared as final.
Can I know the reason for this , y should a variable in a static method be declared as final? is there some way to retrieve the manifest.xml of an application from the market, without installing the application? I think the official Market Application somehow get this file (or at least parts of it) to show needed permissions, etc. before installing. I'd be interested in seeing the IntentFilters defined by applications and their activities and processing this information in my application.

I am writing an application that will run on 2.0 and above. Now, I am thinking of adding the Data backup feature to the application. Is there anyway to modify the manifest file to include the metadata only if the phone is using Froyo(2.2). Ideally, i would like to avoid creating a separate application for just Froyo.

This should be simple but I can't find any info on this...
I simply want to read the package value in the android manifest...
CODE:......
The reason is simple I have to call context.getResources().getIdentifier(...)and I need the package.
Since this code will be reused in other apps I want to make it fool proof when I export it and therefore not have to change the value each time.

I am trying to add permissions to my application manifest, so it can access other apps that the user installs at runtime. I thought the way to do this was to define a permission-tree in the manifest, and then use PackageManager.addPermission() to add permissions under that tree. However, I can't get this to work and the documentation I found wasn't conclusive. Could anybody show me how to do this by means of a simple example?

I am having a hard time understanding content providers. In the notepad example and others, the content provider never even declares its CONTENT_URI anywhere inside itself, yet the docs say to publicly declare this. It's declared in a different class. So when an activity queries a content provider with a CONTENT_URI, how does Android know which one I want. I see no link between a content provider and its CONTENT_URI declared in another class.
I also don't how to think about intents and content providers. I know that you don't call an intent on a content provider. But an activity queries a content provider without an intent, and an activity has a mimetype attribute in the manifest that would seem to tie it to a content provider.

I have two applications A and B (in different packages). A can send an explicit intent to B to perform some kind of action. Then,I enforced a permission in application B called "my.permissions.B_PERMISSION ". The A application can still call B despite the fact that it doesn't have the appropriate <uses-permission> in its manifest. Have I understood something wrong?
