Came across this helpful link. It only applies to those tunes post-DRMed by Apple, purchased after April 2009, but still a good thing.

I am available for an annual upgrade on november 9 after. I looked online to make sure i would be able to get the DX on the 15th when it came out. it didn't look like i was able to get a smartphone for the 2 year contract price. so, i called customer service and they said that i am indeed able to upgrade on nov 9 but i'm not eligible for the early upgrade because i am currently a smartphone user.

Is it possible to reboot an Android smartphone as a non-smartphone(Like a Nokia 1100) ? Just enable only services to make phone calls and everything else remain disabled(Slow down the CPU to the lowest clock speeds, lower bit depth, turn off all on-board electronics other than those necessary etc). Motivation is to save power. In my phone most of the power is consumed by Android OS (and not screen). I was wondering if I had a mode like that I could keep the phone alive in case I can't charge the phone immediately, by switching into this power saving mode.

I have music that is playable with Google Play Music player, but not with other players. I have chosen for the music to be "on the device", and it plays when even in Airplane Mode, so I know it is not streaming, but the music files do not show up in my "Music" directory tree, or under any other file trees that I can find. I have used ES File Explorer to do a top down search for some of the missing titles, but it doesn't find them. I'm perplexed. There must be a cache somewhere, but I can't find it.

I originally used double twist to sync up my music and pictures and all, but it kinda became a mess so I bagged it. Now I am trying to straighten my phones card out a bit, and i have 3 different album arts for each music album. Where and how is the album art stored that the droid actually uses for its music player?

Does anyone know how to store the album art of a music album into a cache? I already have my album arts fetched from my content resolver. But I would like to store them inside a cache (probably, a hash map) so that it will not need to fetch the images from the content resolver again but from the cache.

I am working on an app that connects to a media providing site and downloads mp3 files to the user phone. I would like for the user to be unable to copy these files off the phone but only listen to them through my app. I am currently trying to encrypt the files using DES and encryption and decrypt and play the file in bits in the app. This is however not working. Is there a better way of achieving my end goal or has anyone else implemented a similar solution?

I added about 4 gigs of music and 2 gigs of movies to the internal memory of my Inc. Now the music files play when I go into the music player, but when I go into Astro file manager, I can't find the videos or music anywhere. I put them under music and video folders, but nothing. They still show when I am on the computer connected to the phone.I know it isn't the file either, because I added the same movie to the 2 gig card, and it's showing up under astro for that.

I just realized that I posted my last thread in The Lounge rather then Android Lounge which I intended to Makes sense why I haven't gotten any replies. Anywho, this is what I posted earlier Just signed up for your forum to ask for your recommendations for my first smartphone. Now, I'm leaning towards an android mainly because I don't want an iPhone and it seems like it has some great feature as well as a lot of potential.Now, the only issue is that I live in Canada and I'm with Rogers. (Sim cards)My current criteria is that I want a touch phone and it has to support a sim card. External qwerty keyboard is a bonus!I'm sure you all get requests like this all of the time but some help selecting a new phone would be great. I tried doing my own research on what phone to buy but I'm really not great with hacking phones and whatnot to make things work with my carrier but I'm willing to try.tl;dr:Need smartphone with sim card and touchscreen.

I am a Windows nerd. What I will be using the phone for:
-> Calendering, Contact Management, Outlook 2010 syncing, light email and texting, and few phone calls.
-> Printing to networked printer (wlan)
-> SSH to home computer when I am away. (maybe VPN as well).
-> managing ms office docs, pdfs and printing them to a networked printer (wlan)
-> Change the device's mac address to connect to wifi network.
-> very little "internet browsing."
-> t-mobile
-> some type of "file management" / "file browsing" is a must!
-> keepassdroid + browsing banking sites

I had a Toshiba laptop which after years I sold it off. I am never a big fan of laptops in the first place as my desktop is better, faster and I use multiple screens as work computer. As far as I can tell I only need a portable computing device mainly for office programs like microsoft word and powerpoint, and data storage. I use photoshop but I don't think current smartphones can support it yet. I am reluctant to get a laptop as I know that it will be underutilised. Since my contract phone runs out in June 2011, should I wait for better stuff to come or get a smartphone now? What I really want is a a mobile phone with Sony Vaio P series minature laptop for occasional work. Am I asking too much for the current crop of smartphones?

Smart-phones have built in ROM and RAM separately. Also a few phones has virtual memory support too. I would like to know what these memories are basically used for. I understand that RAM is available to user processes. But why do they have a big chunk of ROM? E.g. The wiki page for Droid Incredible says
512 MB DDR RAM
1 GB ROM (748 MB free to user) - what's this free to user?
plus 8 GB moviNAND - typically used for data storage

I have been developing an Android application for about two months now, and the guy I'm writing it for wants me to use this instead of the android SDK so we can deploy the application for multiple smart phones: http://rhomobile.com/ he says you can write the application in one language and it can be deployed for most smart phones. Has anyone used this website to do something similar? Any advantages or disadvantages I should know about and tell him? Maybe someone could give me a better explanation on what this really does. I'm current a one man army. He wants the application out for most smart phones but can afford to hire more developers.

I'm a young, inexperienced programmer (I've had a year of Java, some MATLAB, and HTML/CSS in school) but I've decided that to get better, I'm making it my goal to produce a simple smartphone app of some kind this year- probably either webOS or Android since I'm on a PC and can't afford a Mac just to write an iPhone app.
So my question is, where do I start? I've read the threads about How to Write for Android and such, but I'm not sure I have enough Java experience to just jump right in. And then there's webOS which is based on JavaScript, correct?
I guess I'd just like some input from more experienced folks. I have some Barnes and Noble book credit I'm looking to get rid of too, so if there's a guide you think would be useful, feel free to request.
tl;dr: Programming newbie ultimately wants to build a simple smartphone app. Where do I start?
