Android :: Looking To Eventually Build A Smartphone App / Where To Start?
Feb 5, 2010
I'm a young, inexperienced programmer (I've had a year of Java, some MATLAB, and HTML/CSS in school) but I've decided that to get better, I'm making it my goal to produce a simple smartphone app of some kind this year- probably either webOS or Android since I'm on a PC and can't afford a Mac just to write an iPhone app.
So my question is, where do I start? I've read the threads about How to Write for Android and such, but I'm not sure I have enough Java experience to just jump right in. And then there's webOS which is based on JavaScript, correct?
I guess I'd just like some input from more experienced folks. I have some Barnes and Noble book credit I'm looking to get rid of too, so if there's a guide you think would be useful, feel free to request.
tl;dr: Programming newbie ultimately wants to build a simple smartphone app. Where do I start?

I am available for an annual upgrade on november 9 after. I looked online to make sure i would be able to get the DX on the 15th when it came out. it didn't look like i was able to get a smartphone for the 2 year contract price. so, i called customer service and they said that i am indeed able to upgrade on nov 9 but i'm not eligible for the early upgrade because i am currently a smartphone user.

Is it possible to reboot an Android smartphone as a non-smartphone(Like a Nokia 1100) ? Just enable only services to make phone calls and everything else remain disabled(Slow down the CPU to the lowest clock speeds, lower bit depth, turn off all on-board electronics other than those necessary etc). Motivation is to save power. In my phone most of the power is consumed by Android OS (and not screen). I was wondering if I had a mode like that I could keep the phone alive in case I can't charge the phone immediately, by switching into this power saving mode.

Been trying to update the radio and apply the latest ota , every time I get to apply the update.zip it runs and eventually stops with something similar to the following:
"Can't apply radio"
(No room on device)
"Can't apply firmware"
(No room on device)
Then I can reboot and I get the new droid screen, new widgets, etc. But no wifi, etc. I've done this about 10 times now so I admit I'm bit foggy after 18 hrs of reading and trying to apply froyo.

Just wondering what's usual, I have 114 apps and 29mb phone storage left. I have froyo and force apps to sd. Really interested in how many more apps people can install after rooting and installing apps to sd+. Do you think that apps like google maps will eventually be allowed to be moved to sd?

Whenever I use the speakerphone, it eventually turns the screen off. Fine. But there are times when I want to take it back off speakerphone, so I need to see my screen. But, if I press the power button to turn the screen back on it hangs up the call.

I downloaded the Android 2.2 source code and try to build it. When I executed the make command, I got an error here like this build/core/java.mk:20: *** frameworks/ex/common: Invalid LOCAL_SDK_VERSION '8' Choices are: current 4 5 6 7. Stop. Then I changed the frameworks/ex/common/Android.mk to LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 8 from LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 7. Next place, build/core/java.mk:20: *** external/jsr305: Invalid LOCAL_SDK_VERSION '8' Choices are: current 4 5 6 7. Stop. I changed the external/jsr305/Android.mk to LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 8 from LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 7
Last one, build/core/java.mk:20: *** external/guava: Invalid LOCAL_SDK_VERSION '8' Choices are: current 4 5 6 7. Stop. I changed the external/guava/Android.mk to LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 8 from LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 7
By these changes the code started the compilation.
1. Why the error occured?
2. Changes which I did is correct or not?

I just realized that I posted my last thread in The Lounge rather then Android Lounge which I intended to Makes sense why I haven't gotten any replies. Anywho, this is what I posted earlier Just signed up for your forum to ask for your recommendations for my first smartphone. Now, I'm leaning towards an android mainly because I don't want an iPhone and it seems like it has some great feature as well as a lot of potential. Now, the only issue is that I live in Canada and I'm with Rogers. (Sim cards)My current criteria is that I want a touch phone and it has to support a sim card. External qwerty keyboard is a bonus!I'm sure you all get requests like this all of the time but some help selecting a new phone would be great. I tried doing my own research on what phone to buy but I'm really not great with hacking phones and whatnot to make things work with my carrier but I'm willing to try.tl;dr:Need smartphone with sim card and touchscreen.

I am a Windows nerd. What I will be using the phone for:
-> Calendering, Contact Management, Outlook 2010 syncing, light email and texting, and few phone calls.
-> Printing to networked printer (wlan)
-> SSH to home computer when I am away. (maybe VPN as well).
-> managing ms office docs, pdfs and printing them to a networked printer (wlan)
-> Change the device's mac address to connect to wifi network.
-> very little "internet browsing."
-> t-mobile
-> some type of "file management" / "file browsing" is a must!
-> keepassdroid + browsing banking sites

I had a Toshiba laptop which after years I sold it off. I am never a big fan of laptops in the first place as my desktop is better, faster and I use multiple screens as work computer. As far as I can tell I only need a portable computing device mainly for office programs like microsoft word and powerpoint, and data storage. I use photoshop but I don't think current smartphones can support it yet. I am reluctant to get a laptop as I know that it will be underutilised. Since my contract phone runs out in June 2011, should I wait for better stuff to come or get a smartphone now? What I really want is a a mobile phone with Sony Vaio P series minature laptop for occasional work. Am I asking too much for the current crop of smartphones?

Smart-phones have built in ROM and RAM separately. Also a few phones has virtual memory support too. I would like to know what these memories are basically used for. I understand that RAM is available to user processes. But why do they have a big chunk of ROM? E.g. The wiki page for Droid Incredible says
512 MB DDR RAM
1 GB ROM (748 MB free to user) - what's this free to user?
plus 8 GB moviNAND - typically used for data storage

I have been developing an Android application for about two months now, and the guy I'm writing it for wants me to use this instead of the android SDK so we can deploy the application for multiple smart phones: http://rhomobile.com/ he says you can write the application in one language and it can be deployed for most smart phones. Has anyone used this website to do something similar? Any advantages or disadvantages I should know about and tell him? Maybe someone could give me a better explanation on what this really does. I'm current a one man army. He wants the application out for most smart phones but can afford to hire more developers.

Or any other smartphone for that matter. I thought this would be a basic feature. I came from the blackberry where this was simple using blackberry messenger. I could send a contact to my wife and when she received it there was an option to save the contact on her end. Is there an app that will do this?

Before publishing a new app on the market, on which devices would you suggest to check whether it runs fine or not? What are your experiences? How do you handle this? Are there some empirical values, for example, do applications that run smoothly on a HTC Desire behave similar on all HTC devices? Are there some devices on which the app should definately be checked?I like to picture myself releasing a high quality product instead of throwing some crap on the market. :) But I suppose I am not the only one who cannot buy like 5 or more devices just to ensure that the apps works fine on every kind of device.

I was wondering if exist, or if it's possible to build, a special android release for old smartphones without basic phone functions, to be used just as standalone media player. I mean a basic distribution that allow just playing local audio files or remote files through wifi home network.
I have an old xperia x8, which is a good phone and there are a lot of android based custom roms, but i need to use it just as a media player. As soon as I power it on it has to show a list of music files to play.

I am undertaking an android dev project for Uni. It requires me to build an app for an android smart phone that will allow me to remotely shutdown a pc. I have never programmed for phones before so am a little lost as to where to begin. Namely:
- Which is the easiest IDE to use for PC to smart phone connectivety
- Is there any examples or tutorials on establishing a connection between a pc and smartphone.

I'm looking into getting a smartphone. Primarily to use as an ipod touch type device and a point and shoot camera. Possibly, also as a phone at a later date.
1) Can sim unlocked phones such as the Xperia Z1, Nexus 5, or Moto X Developer Edition be used this way? Do manufacturers, like Sony, update their unlocked phones?
2) How about carrier unactivated? Such as the Samsung Galaxy S4 or Note 3? Carrier unactivated would have to be activated on the appropriate wireless network to be updated? I'd be stuck with whatever is on the phone, if I'm correct.
