Android :: Smartphone Memory Configuration - Inbuilt ROM And RAM
Jul 17, 2010
Smart-phones have built in ROM and RAM separately. Also a few phones has virtual memory support too. I would like to know what these memories are basically used for. I understand that RAM is available to user processes. But why do they have a big chunk of ROM? E.g. The wiki page for Droid Incredible says
512 MB DDR RAM
1 GB ROM (748 MB free to user) - what's this free to user?
plus 8 GB moviNAND - typically used for data storage

I have a large bitmap that i would like to keep in memory when the qwerty keyboard is visible. My app is always in landscape, so this is the only configuration change that will cause a reDraw. I heard this is what onRetainNonConfigurationinstance() is for...but cant figure it out. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Is it possible to reboot an Android smartphone as a non-smartphone(Like a Nokia 1100) ? Just enable only services to make phone calls and everything else remain disabled(Slow down the CPU to the lowest clock speeds, lower bit depth, turn off all on-board electronics other than those necessary etc). Motivation is to save power. In my phone most of the power is consumed by Android OS (and not screen). I was wondering if I had a mode like that I could keep the phone alive in case I can't charge the phone immediately, by switching into this power saving mode.

I want to design an application that would use the android's inbuilt "Maps " application . I want to add the extra functionality to this application . Like , in my application , It would take 2 User inputs (i) Where the user currently is (ii) and where he wants to go (destination) . and I'll show the public transport options available for his journey . ( I'll hard code this part of the program) . But I want this application to have an extra functionality that this application will also show the traffic route of his journey . but for this part I want to use the inbuilt "Maps" application . Is there any way I can do that .

I am using vpnc on my computer to connect on my university VPN. Once again, the configuration is not straightforward, but, mainly, I use IPSec, I have an ID for the VPN, a gateway URL, a secret word, IKE Authmode of PSK, IKE DH Group, Xauth username, Xauth password, I need to enable Single DES, and I have two 'target networks'.
The fact is that Android (2.1)'s built-in VPN does not ask me all these info. It keeps asking for a pre-shared key (this is evidently the contrary of the certificate method), but I do not have such a pre-shared key. Connecting (to the VPN) through my computer works perfectly. What can I do to make Android compatible with the VPN?

I am trying to look for a torrent solution. I have transdroid right now, and it is able to communicate with my seedbox and I can manage torrents that are already loaded on there. My problem is adding new torrents from my private websites. I have noticed that torrent-fu will allow you to search some of the public websites for new torrents, but that doesn't work for me. Right now I have to download the .torrrent file with my default browser.
And it saves the file as "unknown.torrent" then I have to open it with transdroid. This question is worded weird, but basically what I would like, is a torrent app with built in private torrent site searching / downloading. Or the ability to have my dolphin browser, recognise the .torrent extension, and associate transdroid with that.

I saw some previous posts on not using the task killers etc.... I wanted to ask whether one should end a particular ongoing active process or not or even for that matter "end all" active applications..... I know these active apps don't have any CPU usage but active apps r meant to use power rite? So should I use end or end all in the inbuilt task manager/power monitor widget or not to save my battery usage??

I was wondering, is there anyway a developer can hide or exclude a certain app permissions from being seen by Android market users? And are the permissions for an app controlled or regulated by Google? Another question I have - Is there anyway to restrict PDF files from opening in the default browser? This is a problem when I am on a search engine and accidentally click a link that's a pdf file- I don't want pdf's downloaded without asking me permission atleast. And my last question, is there a way to view current extensions that are installed in the browser.? Where is androids inbuilt file manager? Does uninstalling an application completely take off everything related to that app from your phone?

I was wondering if anyone has figured out how to use the built-in tethering? Once you plug the Epic into a computer you can put it into tether mode, after that it is visible on the computer as a samsung modem, however I don't know how to configure it past there. If anyone has an answer it would help out not only myself, but other Epic owners who don't feel like paying PDANet for a built in feature.

I just realized that I posted my last thread in The Lounge rather then Android Lounge which I intended to Makes sense why I haven't gotten any replies. Anywho, this is what I posted earlier Just signed up for your forum to ask for your recommendations for my first smartphone. Now, I'm leaning towards an android mainly because I don't want an iPhone and it seems like it has some great feature as well as a lot of potential.Now, the only issue is that I live in Canada and I'm with Rogers. (Sim cards)My current criteria is that I want a touch phone and it has to support a sim card. External qwerty keyboard is a bonus!I'm sure you all get requests like this all of the time but some help selecting a new phone would be great. I tried doing my own research on what phone to buy but I'm really not great with hacking phones and whatnot to make things work with my carrier but I'm willing to try.tl;dr:Need smartphone with sim card and touchscreen.

I am a Windows nerd. What I will be using the phone for:
-> Calendering, Contact Management, Outlook 2010 syncing, light email and texting, and few phone calls.
-> Printing to networked printer (wlan)
-> SSH to home computer when I am away. (maybe VPN as well).
-> managing ms office docs, pdfs and printing them to a networked printer (wlan)
-> Change the device's mac address to connect to wifi network.
-> very little "internet browsing."
-> t-mobile
-> some type of "file management" / "file browsing" is a must!
-> keepassdroid + browsing banking sites

I had a Toshiba laptop which after years I sold it off. I am never a big fan of laptops in the first place as my desktop is better, faster and I use multiple screens as work computer. As far as I can tell I only need a portable computing device mainly for office programs like microsoft word and powerpoint, and data storage. I use photoshop but I don't think current smartphones can support it yet. I am reluctant to get a laptop as I know that it will be underutilised. Since my contract phone runs out in June 2011, should I wait for better stuff to come or get a smartphone now? What I really want is a a mobile phone with Sony Vaio P series minature laptop for occasional work. Am I asking too much for the current crop of smartphones?

So I loaded the new release of froyo petes v.04 and earlier when trying to use the built in wired tether option it defaults to a web-page about upgrading to a tethering plan. It says that they are offering it for $5 off until july 15th. Wireless tether still works fine but just wanted to know if anybody else got this message when using the built in program on the new froyo release. I was able to use this option in the earlier versions of froyo without the message. Update, so I completely missed this already reported on phandroid so I guess I was just getting the message others have already reported.

My hero use to be able to use regular headphones and use the mic from the phone but my moment does not. I lost my headset and plugged in these expensive headphones with no mic and the mic on the moment does not activate. It thinks that I'm using a full headset with a headphone and mic on the hero when I plugged in a headset it showed up an icon with headphones and mic, but when I plugged in regular headphones, it didn't show the mic and allowed me to use the hero's mic. Is this a Sense UI thing? Will it be fixed with the 2.1 update? Does the nexus one use the phones mic when u plug in regular headphones?
