Android :: Should Unroot Before Froyo Upgrade Galaxy S
Sep 22, 2010
I've posted this question over on the Samsung Galaxy S section, however, it may be a more general query that someone can help with, particularly the unrooting query as I realise some other phone users have already went through the 2.1-2.2 upgrade. I've rooted and applied the "one click LAG fix" to my glitchy SGS running 2.1 and the phone performs very smoothly and reliably since. (benchmarks are consistently over 2200, although I realise that statistics aren't everything)
It is expected that sometime in the next few weeks in the UK (???) that the upgrade to Froyo will be available through the Samsung KIES desktop software rather than OTA and I have the following queries.
1. Should the phone be unrooted before an upgrade is attempted?
2. Should the "LAG fix" be removed before an upgrade?
3. Has anyone previously removed their "LAG fix" and can they advise if there are any gotchas I should look out for?

On dutch forums i red that you have to go to a samsung service point to upgrade your SGS to android 2.2 froyo. Is this true or are they all wrong... because i thought it would be OTA?

I'm probably in the same situation as many SGS owners, i.e. installed the one click LAG fix to overcome the issues with 2.1. As 2.2 is due out (in the UK) probably sometime in the next few weeks, can someone more technical advise if the LAG fix should be removed and the phone unrooted before the official upgrade. Additionally, is there any benefit moving up to 2.2 other than Flash? I haven't had any real issues with the phone other than the initial LAG. I'm on Orange UK, but I don't suppose that really matters?

so i tried to upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 through KIES this resulted in a failed upgrade, so i then tried to use Odin. unfortunately the firmware i flashed to caused even more bugs and kept restarting, So I then tried to use KIES/Odin to flash to a different firmware i now get two different errors
1. along the lines of storage is not ready - copying of default media fails
2. cannot mount a certain file - stl11. or something ?

I have read a few posts hear saying that it is recommended that after you have upgraded to froyo 2.2 that you should do a System Reset otherwise things might run slower than before?
I have a lot of applications (6 pages) installed on my SGS and also contacts etc setup. I also have some gameloft apps that I cannot redownload if I lost them without paying again.
I am guessing that a reset will wipe all this out? Is there another way without having to start again?

I have a big problem with my Galaxy S immediately after upgrading to the JPM/Froyo firmware. Immediately after the update the phone attempted to reboot, and now stays on the Galaxy S logo way too long before the screen goes blank and only the bottom two buttons are illuminated. And it just stays like that. I have a feeling that it might have something to do with the OneClickLagFix that was installed on the phone; maybe the upgrade didn't like the lag fix being there. Also, on pressing VolumeDn, Home and Power to get the recovery screen, the screen is replaced with a yellow "Downloading. Do not turn off Target!!!" splash. So there are no recovery options.

I used DroidMod to root when I had 2.01. When 2.1 became available, I "un-rooted" then forced update to 2.1. Well to be honest, it is really slow and laggy. I now want to go back to DroidMod, but nothing I have tried seems to work.

One week ago i bought my first smartphone, Samsung I9001, i had no ideea what to do with it, so when i connected it to my laptop via Kies it asked me if i want to upgrade my firmware. I did it and at 3% stoped working. So i searched the web for solutions, i found that Odin program, and i installed android 2.3.6. I was really happy that i solved the problem, but then i found out that my warranty could be lost because i rooted my phone, and it apears also in Menu-About Phone-Kernel Version. So now i dont know how to unroot it, and install an official firmware, and what version of the firmware do i need, to have my warranty back.

I did the manual upgrade to 2.2 Froyo last night and 2 applications have stopped working
-1) Ringo Lite is totally gone and will not install at all manually.
-2) Open Home is installed but cannot seem to make it stick as the default "home" application. Everytime I hit the Home button on my N1 it goes back to the 2.2 (froyo) default home screen.

The Android 2.2 Upgrade List: Phones Definitely Getting Froyo
Nexus One: Despite the shuttering of its online store, Google's flagship phone is still first in line for the Froyo upgrade. In late May, a "very limited test group" received an early copy of the 2.2 software. Google has since been working on final tweaks and expects a widespread rollout to begin soon.
Motorola Droid: The Droid that started it all is set to be second in line for the Android 2.2 upgrade. Early reports suggested the Droid could see Froyo before the end of June. We all know what happened with the Droid's 2.1 upgrade schedule, though, so don't mark your calendars just yet.
HTC Droid Incredible: HTC has confirmed that its newest Droid handset will be feasting on Froyo. No specific timeframe has been released outside of sometime "in the second half of this year."
HTC EVO 4G: The EVO 4G is the phone most frequently pitted up against Apple's new iPhone 4 (hint: the EVO wins), so it's no surprise that it's on the confirmed guest list for the latest and greatest Android release. The EVO should get Froyo sometime in the next six months.
MyTouch 3G and MyTouch 3G Slide: The entire MyTouch line of phones on T-Mobile is expected to see Froyo before the end of 2010.
HTC Desire: It's not yet available in the States, but this desirable HTC handset is on-tap to get the Android 2.2 upgrade sometime in the next six months as well.

My unbranded SGS is currently running 2.2 (I9000XXJPM, FROYO.XWJP6) which I updated via the registery hack last month. It's running smooth and I've not had any problems My question is, what is the difference between my existing version and the 'offical' Froyo 2.2 that will be released soon? Would I be able to update my firmware to the newer version since I'm already on 2.2 (I9000XXJPM, FROYO.XWJP6)?

My Desire was crashing, so I requested a replacement with O2 business. I upgraded to 2.2 last week using the software update link on the phone. Today I received my 'new' handset from O2 which still has 2.1-update1 as the firmware version. When I tried to upgrade I was informed there is no newer version. Spoke to O2 business, who told me that HTC had withdrawn it again. I'm kinda pleased that my 2.2 desire has been sent back, if there are serious enough issues with Froyo for it to be withdrawn. I did like a couple of things extra in the menu structures, but is it really that important?

Got my Desire just under a months ago. Had to return it for endless restarting & freezing 2 days ago. Got an unbranded replacement. Just did the O2 OTA upgrade and I notice I have no Market app. (I may be missing other things also, I don't know, since I'm a fairly new user).
