a service started by a broadcast receiver starts an activity. I want to make it possible for this activity to communicate back to the service. I have chosen to use AIDL to make it possible. Everything seems works good except for bindService() method called in onCreate() of the activity. bindService(), in fact, throws a null pointer exception because onServiceConnected() is never called while onBind() method of the service is. Anyway bindService() returns true.The service is obviously active because it starts the activity.I know that calling an activity from a service could sound strange, but unfortunately this is the only way to have speech recognition in a service.

I've got three activities in my app, and the user switches back and forth pretty frequently. I've also got a remote service, which handles a telnet connection. The apps need to bind to this service in order to send/receive telnet messages.
I have re-written my code in light of your clarification on the difference between using bindService() as a stand-alone function or after startService(), and I now only get the leak error message intermittently when using the back button to cycle between activities.
My connection activity has the following onCreate() and onDestroy():

So the service is started when the activity is started, and stopped when the activity is destroyed if no successful telnet connection was made (connectStatus == 0). The other activities bind to the service only if a successful connection was made (connectStatus == 1, saved to a shared preferences). Here is their onResume() and onDestroy():

So the binding happens in onResume() so that it will pick up the changed state from the connection activity, and in the onDestroy() function it is unbound, if necessary.
But I still get the memory leak error message "Activity has leaked ServiceConnection @438030a8 that was originally bound here" intermittently when switching activities. What am I doing wrong?

I did as you suggested and added an onUnBind() override to the service. onUnBind() is actually only triggered when all clients disconnect from the service, but when I hit the home button, it executed, then the error message popped up! This makes no sense to me, as all the clients have been unbound from the service, so how could the one destroyed leak a serviceConnection? Check it out:

I thought it might be something like you said, where the binding to the service is not complete when unbindService() is called, however I tried calling a method on the service as I backed through each activity to verify that the binding is complete, and they all went through fine.
In general, this behavior doesn't seem related to how long I stay in each activity. Once the first activity leaks its serviceConnection, however, they all do as I back through them after that.
One other thing, if I turn on "Immediately destroy activities" in Dev Tools, it prevents this error.
I am very new beginner, and I am designing a small application as below.
- After a user starts the application, he/she can click the start button to start a background task. (e.g. retrieving the news headlines periodically, then do something...)
- Even after the user quits the application, the background task still running.
- To stop the background task, the user needs to run the application again, and clicks the stop button to stop the background task.
In the above scenario, what API should I use ? (Local Service Binding ? Remote Service Binding ? Handler ?)
I am working on an android application, where the activity binds to a local service to perform certain tasks.Now I am binding the service in the OnCreate method of the Activity, after which the activity has to use the service object to invoke the functionality defined in the servicein the OnStart method. The problem here is that once a call "bindservice" has been made, we might not get the serviceobject immediately, so my service object would be null till that time. My sample application has a check box which starts(binds)/unbind to the local service on a single process. The local service instance is created by every bind request (and destroyed by every unbind).
If I press the button repeatedly, then LocalService$LocalBinder is leaked!
The problem is not resolved even If I set an obtained binder to null (like below).

I want to know what es the best place in an Activity to bind to a service? I saw examples doing it in onResume() and also in onCreate(). I was asking myself if it is not a problem putting it into onCreate(), cause in onPause() i will do a unbind to the service, so i dont get a serviceConnectionLeak, if i leave the activity. Now if i press the Home-Button and then switching to the HomeScreen, the Activity will unbind from the service, when i go back to the Activity from the Taskmanager, then onCreate() will not be called and if the Code is trying to access a function from the service i will get a null-pointer exception. If i bind and unbind only in onResume() and onPause() i dont have this problem.

I'm reluctant to use setForeground() - the service being down temporarily isn't that big a deal, and I am assume I can trust that I'll be run again once memory is available, correct? The problem here is this. The service was started via startService() before being killed. However, when it is restarted, only onCreate() is executed. This makes it hard to continue, because starting work onCreate() means I can't even bind to the service (to say query it's status) without it doing so. Is this a bug or per design? What is the status of the service after it is being restarted? Is it consider "started" by the system, i.e. waiting for a call to stopService()?

Before calling unbindService i first check if my service is still bound by checking (mBoundService - obtained from the ServiceConnection) I also check if the service is not stopped and only then i call the unbindService But I still get the error. From the posts that I read only I found out that both these calls are asynchronous and that the service will only stop when nothing is bound to it.
In the implementation of my remote service's published API, is there a way to identify which client called a given method? For example, is there a way to obtain a unique ID or address of the caller? View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running into an issue with the way my asynctasks are executed. Here's the problem code:

What I'm doing here is creating a new asynctask object, assigning it to firstTask and then executing it. I then want to fire off a separate asynctask when the first one is done and making sure it returns a success value (1 in this case). This works perfectly on Android 2.0 and up. However, I am testing with Android 1.5 and problems start popping up. The code above will run the first asynctask but doInBackground() is never called despite onPreExecute() being called. If I am to execute the first task without the get() method, doInBackground() is called and everything works as expected. Except now I do not have a way to determine if the first task completed successfully so that I can tell the second task to execute. Is it safe to assume that this is a bug with asynctask on Android 1.5? Especially since the API says that the get method has been implemented since API 3. Is there any way to fix this? Or another way to determine that the first task has finished?
I'm a little confused on how binding to services works. I understand using Context.startService() starts the service and that bindService doesn't call onStartCommand. But my understanding is that if I use startService, I have to explicitly stop the service. But I want the service to die if there are no more activities bound to it.My problem is that calling bindService never calls onServiceConnected(), so my Service binder object is null. Does the service have to be explicitly started in order to bind to it? If so, how does it know to terminate when nothing is binding to it anymore, and how do I know if it's started so I can know to use the bound object?

I also want to add a reference to the rowId in the gallery so when the image is clicked it will open the relevant page (so it can show the message)
Has anyone succeeded in running the Java bindings for dbus on Android? All indications point at dbus already running as a process within the Android OS, but there is no official access point for them through the Java interface.

Lets say I want to render a text message which states something like: "The user age is 38". Lets suppose that the user age is the result of an algorithm. Using some typical i18n framework I would write in my i18n file something like "The user age is {0}". Then at run time I would populate parameters accordingly. If I want to render all this information into a single layout in one of my activities the only way I have found is getting all needed TextViews by id and then populate them one by one through code. I was wondering if there is some mapping / binding mechanism in which I can execute something like: render(myPerson, myView) and that automatically through reflection each of the model properties get mapped into each of the TextViews. If someone has ever worked with SpringMVC, Im looking for something similar to their mechanism to map domain objects / models to views (e.g. spring:forms)

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm working on an app that calls a web service, then the webservice returns an array list. My problem is I am having trouble getting the data into the ArrayList and then displaying in a ListView. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I know for a fact the web service returns an ArrayList. Everything seems to be working fine, just no data in the ListView or the ArrayList.....donned on me that the data the webservice responds with is a complex type. I really think that's where I am getting hung up, but not sure how to correct it.
I finally figured out my webservice returns a JSON Array. Now getting that over to the ArrayList and/or ListView is the challenge. I have a feeling that once this project is done, it might make for a great tutorial or example...
