Android :: How To Identify Which Client Called Into A Remote/AIDL Service
Jul 26, 2010
In the implementation of my remote service's published API, is there a way to identify which client called a given method? For example, is there a way to obtain a unique ID or address of the caller? I already cache an AIDL callback reference to the client, but not sure how I can use this for identification.

I didn't find a sufficient answer to my problem in any posts, if there already is one, please excuse and point me to it, thanks. I made 2 projects. project 1 hast an activity that binds to a service from project 2 on a button click (all just for testing).
How can I make project 1 know (import) my TestInterface (from TestInterface.aidl out of project 2) for usage in: "TestInterface mService = (TestInterface) TestInterface.Stub.asInterface(service);"
without adding project 2 to the build path, because if I'd have an installed service without the project code, I couldn't do it this way, too...?? I read in one thread that TestInterface.aidl should just be added to project 1, too, but if I do this, in DDMS enforceInterface() complains and seems to just see/use the interface from project 1 and it doesn't work.
2. issue:...............

I am developing an application using services and Remote interface. I have a question about passing the reference of my Remote interface throughout Activities. In my first Activity, I bind my service with my activity, in order to get a reference to my interface I use
private ServiceConnection mConnection = new ServiceConnection() {
@Override
public void onServiceConnected(ComponentName arg0, IBinder service) {
x = X.Stub.asInterface(service);
}
@Override
public void onServiceDisconnected(ComponentName arg0) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
}
};
x being the reference to my interface. Now I would like to access this interface from another activity, I see two ways to do it but I don't know which one is the "proper" way to do it: passing x with my intent when I call the new Activity redo this.bindService(new Intent(y.this,z.class), mConnection, Context.BIND_AUTO_CREATE); in the onCreate() of my new Activity

Im creating a mail application, where i need to start a service instance for every account, which will check for the new mails for that account. Now my problem is that i want to identify how my service i have created so far (by calling startService()). And also i want to stop a specific instance of service. I know that calling stopService() will stop all the instances of that service. Is there any work around to it.

Under what circumstances would using AIDL to define a service interface be the correct decision (rather than just creating an extension to the service class)?

I've created a service that is meant to communicated to an activity using aidl's and callback functions. I got it working just fine with my test activity in the same package. But I was wanting to expose this service to different activities running in a completely different .apk file. Is it possible to accomplish this? What does the separate package need to bind to my service and register the callbacks? Or am I going about this completely wrong and should I try a different method for conveying information back and forth between two packages.

I have created a service which exposes few AIDL defined interfaces. I want to access this Service from an application with different package. I have no clue how to achieve this. I want to see an example on this.
Unfortunately all examples I see has client application in the Service package it self:(
Could you please share some sample/example code on this?

I have a service that will send out notifications with timed tasks. I need this service to run outside the life of the application, but I only need to access the services functions during the lifespan of the app. Is a local service enough or do I need to implement AIDL?

I have a service that regularly queries a web server for new messages. The service stores the new messages in an arrayList. These messages are implemented using a custom class, storing all kinds of metadata (strings and longs).
An activity then connects to this service to retrieve those messages and display them to the user.
I have an .aidl file that describes the interface that the service exposes.
CODE:..........
The Message class extends the Parcelable class which should allow for the IPC transfer.
The problem is this: Eclipse gives me an error saying that the type of List<Message> is unknown. Any imports are marked as invalid.

I was looking for a Remoter Desktop client in the marketplace and see there are quite a few pay ones (too bad there are no free ones). None of them mention if they work with the new, more secure, RDP introduced with the latest versions of Windows. I tried one demo app, and it failed to connect to my Windows 7 computer (which uses this latest version by default). Can anyone confirm a remote desktop client that supports the latest version of RD?I found a great VNC viewer, but I need one that specifically supports the built in remote desktop protocol.

I'm an experienced C++/Java dev who has been truly enjoying that past two days of getting neck deep into the Android SDK. I can foresee a lot of sleepless nights ahead Now, being arrogant due to experience (lol) I basically wrote a hello world Activity, got it to work and promptly decided to write an out of process service with accompanying client for project #2. Android is so well thought out (if not exactly documented although that's an 'over time' issue inmho) that I had basically implented everything but callbacks into the client before realizing (and feeling like a total idiot) that there's a very nice example called RemoteService (lol @ me - again) Basically, this validated everything I'd been doing, although I did notice that because my client is in its own project and namespace and my service is in another project and namespace (but the same Eclipse workspace) that I had to have the service entry in my service's manifest AND my client's manifest (that one took me a while to figure out) in order to bind on the service. Anyhow, everything's great, I am starting to love on Android (figuratively) but I've run into <BRITISH-NESS>a bit of a sticky wicket, eh, wot?</BRITISH-NESS>.
When my client Activity binds on my service (which is running in its own process) and calls the equivalent of 'registerCallback', the interface is added perfectly to the RemoteCallbackList object and I can immediately (right on the next line of code) use the interface to send a notification to the client. Now, my problem is that when my main service thread tries to pull the interface out of the RemoteCallbackList via the broadcast methods, the RemoteCallbackList is always 'empty' - it returns 0 from beginBroadcast. After double checking ensure that I AM actually adding it to the list (because I've been a collossal idiot before) and that I am getting success back from 'register', I immediately think it's a threading issue, so: I add logging code to the service in key places to log what the thread id is repeatedly, and I think "uh, I think I need to use a handler of some sort to make the call back in the thread that handled the registration" and to double check I call beginBroadcast right after 'register' and find that it always returns back the correct number of callback interfaces. So it VERY much appears to be a threading issue (to me) so now I'm a bit stuck I've written a handler so that my main service thread can request the correct thread to actually call 'beginBroadcast' and then thought 'how is it going to know what thread that is...?' and instead am now thinking I need to pass, via a handler or something, the incoming interface from the thread that runs when the client calls the equivalent of 'registerCallback' to my main service thread. What part of the proper paradigm am I missing? BTW, as an example of the thread IDs, my main service thread is #1, the runnable I use for tasks in the main service thread shows an ID of #1, the message handler I was thinking I could use, shows an ID of #1, but the thread ID I get in my code in the service that runs when the user registers their callback is #7.
If I plan to notify clients when the service notices something it thinks they need to know, do I need to notify (somehow) the clients via the thread with ID #7 or do I need to pass the interface I get when the user registers their callback from thread #7 to thread #1 and call 'register' on the RemoteCallbackList from thread #1? Sorry for the verbosity but I figured more is better than less. Again, everything works great except this one little part.

I'm confused about whether I need to run my service in a separate process. What are the advantages / disadvantages of each?For reference I'm trying to create an App that uses a service to play [streaming] audio in the background. So which one is better for my use case?

I have an app that uses a TabHost. Several of the Tabs share a common HUD. I am using a service to periodically update those values by calling an AIDL function when ready.
However, since several of the Tabs are using the same HUD I would like to abstract that part out.
I thought about having the HUD.xml use a String resource as it's value and then the abstracted class can update the String resource. However, apparently Android can not update String resources programatically.
The only alternative solution I see would be using SharedPreference.
I have concerns accessing a Database everytime the value is refreshed.

I'm developing a GPS tracking software on android. I need IPC to control the service from different activities. So I decide to develop a remote service with AIDL.This wasn't a big problem but now it's always running into the methods of the interface and not into those of my service class. Maybe someone could help me?If i now try to call a method from an activity for example start(trackId) nothing happens. The binding is OK. When debugging it always runs into the startTracking() in the generated ITrackingServiceRemote.java file and not into my TrackingService class. Where is the problem? I can't find anything wrong.

I have a service that needs to hold a persistent TCP connection, think IM. I'm reluctant to use setForeground() - the service being down temporarily isn't that big a deal, and I am assume I can trust that I'll be run again once memory is available, correct? The problem here is this. The service was started via startService() before being killed. However, when it is restarted, only onCreate() is executed. This makes it hard to continue, because starting work onCreate() means I can't even bind to the service (to say query it's status) without it doing so. Is this a bug or per design? What is the status of the service after it is being restarted? Is it consider "started" by the system, i.e. waiting for a call to stopService()?

I am creating a service client and the following lines give me error. I was wondering how to fix these... // I have put in the service client stuff below...
private CheckZone mBoundService; private ServiceConnection mConnection = new ServiceConnection() { public void onServiceConnected(ComponentName CheckZone, IBinder service) { // This is called when the connection with the service has been // established, giving us the service object we can use to // interact with the service. Because we have bound to a explicit // service that we know is running in our own process, we can // cast its IBinder to a concrete class and directly access it. mBoundService = ((CheckZone.LocalBinder)service).getService();
//This line complians about binding, and states that it can not be resolved. How do I fix this please? Toast.makeText(binding.this, "Connected to CheckZone", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); }

I am getting IllegalArgumentException: Service is not registered when i try to stop my service by initially calling unbindservice and then stopService.
Before calling unbindService i first check if my service is still bound by checking (mBoundService - obtained from the ServiceConnection) I also check if the service is not stopped and only then i call the unbindService But I still get the error. From the posts that I read only I found out that both these calls are asynchronous and that the service will only stop when nothing is bound to it.

I am studying RemoteService example in Android's APISample. In the manifest file, it declares the service like this: My question is how can I specify the service to be 'auto-start', i.e. it gets start whenever the phone start?
<service android:name=".app.RemoteService" android:process=":remote" >
<intent-filter>
<!-- These are the interfaces supported by the service, which
you can bind to. -->
<action
android:name="com.example.android.apis.app.IRemoteService" />

I have implemented a RemoteService which will increment a countere ( just for testing purposes ). Therefore I have a Task class which implements Runnable and the method run() where a infinite while loop increments the variable.
From the client side, I start the RemoteService with startService and then i bind to the service. When I close the activity, the service is still running. Now i want to rebind to the service.
How do I know if the service has already been started (therefore i would only need to bind to the service again) or not (then I would need to call startService() first and then bind to the service)?
What would happen, if I call startService() if the service is already running? Does the OS start a second service, or will it affect the service which is already running?

I have a Service for my Android app that performs HTTP calls. The Service stores cookies in a CookieStore. I am trying to find a way to persist the CookieStore but I haven't been successful. I don't want the user to log in every time to receive a new CookieStore.
I tried to use SharedPreferences to store the CookieStore as a string, but I can't re-construct the CookieStore with a String.
Has anyone else had success in persisting a CookieStore?

My initial activity is basically a splash screen while preforming initialization and login in to network server. To save memory I want to finish() the splash activity once it starts the main menu activity. I still want the remote service to operate. Testing shows it does. But am I going to get into trouble doing this? I know I can restart the remote from the main menu activity but I am trying to save overhead by not starting it twice. The remote service is required by the splash activity.
