Android :: ListView Data Binding From XML Parser

Aug 17, 2009

I currently building an android apps that retrieve data from a distant Web service and I search an efficient way to bind data form XML to ListView. I already use CursorAdapter and i search on the web for an "XmlAdapter". I read on Google IO topic "Coding for Life - Battery Life, That Is" (http://code.google.com/events/io/sessions/ CodingLifeBatteryLife.html) that is more efficient to use "stream parser" instead of "tree parser" but I don't find the way to build a class that implement ListAdapter because of stream parser can't navigate backward so I don't understand how implement method that use "position" parameter (How retrieve data before current XML Parser position?).

Android :: Binding Data From Database To Checkbox In ListView?

Oct 1, 2009

I'm trying to bind data from my SQLiteDatabase to a ListView. I'm currently using a SimpleCursorAdapter to fill in my ListView. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to work with setting a CheckBox's checked attribute. This is how I do it now; instead of changing the CheckBox's checked status the adapter is filling in the value to the text argument, so the value is displayed right of the CheckBox as text.

Java:
setListAdapter( new SimpleCursorAdapter( this, R.layout.mylist, data,
new String[] { Datenbank.DB_STATE, Datenbank.DB_NAME }, new int[] { R.id.list_checkbox, R.id.list_text } ) );

mylist.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout android:id="@+id/LinearLayout01"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" >
<CheckBox android:text="" android:id="@+id/list_checkbox"
android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:checked="false" > </CheckBox>
<TextView android:text="" android:id="@+id/list_text" android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" > </TextView> </LinearLayout>

The field in the database is of course of type boolean and I've also tried to assign an id to the checked field to fill the value in.

Android :: Binding List Views To Large Data Sets

Feb 1, 2010

I need to be able to scroll through a list with (up to) 20K rows, backed by a cursor on a read-only db. Testing 20K rows on a G1, the query takes approx .02s regardless of table size, while binding the adapter to the list takes 4.5s. Note that this is before the view calls used in rendering. What makes the binding delay more troublesome is that it blocks the UI thread, and is incurred on every rotate. Combine these, and doing a rotate just after starting the bind results in a delay up to 9s.

I tried lazy loading with a base adapter, but that hits the same delay in the underlying cursor.getCount(), and the overall user experience isn't ideal. I also considered using an ArrayAdapter, adding synthesized objects from the cursor rows, but then I'd incur the overhead of creating up to 20K objects (not to mention the additional memory requirements).

Google turns up the question on several message boards, but no answers, so it appears to be a common newbie question. It may be painfully obvious to some.

I'm making an Android Java app game (although this question applies to all languages really) and hope to release the first version soon. I'm nervous about how I save data in my game. My problem is that, if in a later update, I decide to store more data or store the same data in a different way, I need to be careful I don't lose or corrupt data for users that upgrade (i.e. I want users to be able to use data created by an old version in the new version, like their high scores from before).For example, say I want to save high scores in version 1.

How To Take Data From Edit Text And Times It Against A Spinner Value - Dynamic Update

Mar 11, 2012

I'm trying to make a simple order system. So the user selects a burger type from a spinner, then the user can enter in the quantity and then there is some math taking place in the background which sets a text view at the bottom with the total price. I'm not sure what method I'm meant to use so that it is updated dynamically when the user changes the text view quantity.

If i just say that all burgers are 2.50, i need some sort of method saying, if/when data is entered into the edit text , take that data and then times it by 2.50 and set it in the total text view below. I'm just unsure on the method part of it so it's dynamic and will change when the edit text quantity is altered.

Code:
package placeorder.com;
import java.util.Random;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.View;

Android :: Call Spinner's Value - Use Other Values Based On A Spinner's Value

Jan 25, 2010

I have a spinner 'aperture' set up with a list of numbers, and a spinner 'mode' with two options. When a button is pushed I need a calculation to run using various inputs, including the current selection from 'aperture' and a value derived from 'mode'. How do I call the value of a spinner so I can use it in a calculation?

Also, how do I use the spinner 'mode's selection to set this other value before implimenting it in the calculation? To be more specific, if the spinner is set to Small then the value I use in the calculation is 0.015, whereas if Large is selected I need to use 0.028

My other inputs are EditText views, so right now I am set up like this:

CODE:............

That is not the actual equation, it is just a test to make sure everything connects properly. How would I call the value of spinner 'aperture' and the Small/Large spinner 'mode'

Android :: Popup List Like Spinner Without Spinner

Jan 25, 2010

I have a spinner widget in my activity which lets users pick a list name.

Normally, the function of the spinner is to switch between lists but for a couple of instances, I swap out the selection change listener to perform a different function with the same list of options. Once the selection has been made, the old listener is restored and life goes on.

This is a bad and buggy arrangement. Instead, I would like to have a function that just takes a selection listener and some other parameters and shows a popup list that's populated by the same cursor (or and identical cursor) as the spinner, without using the spinner itself.

Is there any way I can do this?

Android :: Advice On First Application (loading Data / Populating Data)

Jun 23, 2010

to start with I've gone through the entire notepad tutorial, I'm a professional game programmer who has some extra time. (though most of my time has been in C++, I did take a year or two of Java classes in college, and remember some of it). I'm not sure the site is a good site to ask questions like this.. If someone has a Forum that might be a good place to ask these newbie questions, please feel free to point me in the direction. I've examined a few of the samples, and think I've a grasp of what I want to do. I've a three to four project plan for some Android releases to sharpen my skills, but since this is my first project and I have never really developed for a mobile phone or the android before, I'd like to make sure I have a solid plan.The first project is an example of the license plate game, however I want to do a few things to change it. Heck maybe when I'm done it'll become a bingo style game, with bluetooth connectivity, you never know. The base idea is I want to offer a list of states, with checkboxes next to them. so to do this, I'll be starting with a Linear List layout similar to the note pad example, and then have a row that is only a Checkbox. I can use text and call strike through if it's been checked off. Perhaps offer an option to not show them if they are checked.

But I want the list to be generated from a set of lists. Maybe all of America's states, maybe reasonable American states (no Hawaii, no Alaska) maybe a North American list, (add in Mexico and some Canadian provinces), a European list, who knows. I'd probably have to have a pop up window that lists all of the lists I suppose using a radiogroup of some sort. So then as far as the data, after weighing options I think best solution is to make a database with two fields, "checked" and "name".I figure I can use the menu for most of the user interaction (aside from clicking on stuff we want to check off) with maybe a few context menu items, I understand how to make all of those already so I should be good. The question I have is what is the best way to populate the lists? Should I create raw data, and have different files for all the lists? Or is there some other way to do this? I've seen this done on the searchable dictionary, but I'd like to hear what people who have actually generated the data like this before. In addition is there an easy way to look at the sql database these applications create, or do you have to run searches on them and output the data? Finally any other suggestion or advice? I definitely want to try to get something like this on the market so I can see the full life cycle and see if anyone actually likes it. (luckily there's not a plethora of them already) but I also want a few people to look over my code if they're willing when I'm done to make sure I've done this right or at least not missing any basic mistakes.

Android :: Should I Use Local Service Binding?

Oct 5, 2009

I am very new beginner, and I am designing a small application as below.

- After a user starts the application, he/she can click the start button to start a background task. (e.g. retrieving the news headlines periodically, then do something...)

- Even after the user quits the application, the background task still running.

- To stop the background task, the user needs to run the application again, and clicks the stop button to stop the background task.

In the above scenario, what API should I use ? (Local Service Binding ? Remote Service Binding ? Handler ?)

Android :: Binding Service To Activity

Dec 16, 2009

I am working on an android application, where the activity binds to a local service to perform certain tasks.Now I am binding the service in the OnCreate method of the Activity, after which the activity has to use the service object to invoke the functionality defined in the servicein the OnStart method. The problem here is that once a call "bindservice" has been made, we might not get the serviceobject immediately, so my service object would be null till that time. So i cannot invoke the service functions.So is there a way to determine in the activity that the service has been bound and the service object is valid and could be used now. For reference i'm attaching a code snippet for the same.

Android :: How Binding To Services Works

Jul 2, 2010

I'm a little confused on how binding to services works. I understand using Context.startService() starts the service and that bindService doesn't call onStartCommand. But my understanding is that if I use startService, I have to explicitly stop the service. But I want the service to die if there are no more activities bound to it.My problem is that calling bindService never calls onServiceConnected(), so my Service binder object is null. Does the service have to be explicitly started in order to bind to it? If so, how does it know to terminate when nothing is binding to it anymore, and how do I know if it's started so I can know to use the bound object?

Android :: Binding From SQLite To Gallery ?

Oct 19, 2010

I am just starting out with Android and I am attempting my first test app, but I am a bit stuck.

I have an SQLite database and a user is selecting a picture and a reference to this a long with a short description is getting stored in the database. This is all working fine, now I want to bind the images from to database to a gallery, but I am a bit confused how I do this.

My layout xml is as follows:

CODE:.................

I want the gallery with a button below

My on create function I have the following:

CODE:...........

I am using the notepad tutorial as an example and my class extends ListActivity.

When I run it I get the error

Your content must have a ListView whose id attribute is 'android.R.id.list'

I'm assuming I am using the wrong type of binding, but I can't seem to find anywhere that tells me how to bind from an sqlite DB to a gallery.

I also want to add a reference to the rowId in the gallery so when the image is clicked it will open the relevant page (so it can show the message)
