I'm working on an app that calls a web service, then the webservice returns an array list. My problem is I am having trouble getting the data into the ArrayList and then displaying in a ListView. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I know for a fact the web service returns an ArrayList. Everything seems to be working fine, just no data in the ListView or the ArrayList.....donned on me that the data the webservice responds with is a complex type. I really think that's where I am getting hung up, but not sure how to correct it.
I finally figured out my webservice returns a JSON Array. Now getting that over to the ArrayList and/or ListView is the challenge. I have a feeling that once this project is done, it might make for a great tutorial or example...

I have an Activity that running on system. I can get the Intent that is used to start the activity. But i don't know how to get the Activity object from the Intent object or something else. Can anyone tell me how to do this??? Note that, I don't use Instrumentation object.

- After a user starts the application, he/she can click the start button to start a background task. (e.g. retrieving the news headlines periodically, then do something...)
- Even after the user quits the application, the background task still running.
- To stop the background task, the user needs to run the application again, and clicks the stop button to stop the background task.
In the above scenario, what API should I use ? (Local Service Binding ? Remote Service Binding ? Handler ?)
I am working on an android application, where the activity binds to a local service to perform certain tasks.Now I am binding the service in the OnCreate method of the Activity, after which the activity has to use the service object to invoke the functionality defined in the servicein the OnStart method. The problem here is that once a call "bindservice" has been made, we might not get the serviceobject immediately, so my service object would be null till that time. So i cannot invoke the service functions.So is there a way to determine in the activity that the service has been bound and the service object is valid and could be used now. For reference i'm attaching a code snippet for the same.

I am trying to access the service object from the all activities, I noticed that the one which created the service [startService(intent)] has the right informaion. But rest does not get the informaion needed.

If I don't invoke startService(intent), serviceObj.getData() retuns null value.

My sample application has a check box which starts(binds)/unbind to the local service on a single process. The local service instance is created by every bind request (and destroyed by every unbind).
If I press the button repeatedly, then LocalService$LocalBinder is leaked!
The problem is not resolved even If I set an obtained binder to null (like below).

I want to know what es the best place in an Activity to bind to a service? I saw examples doing it in onResume() and also in onCreate(). I was asking myself if it is not a problem putting it into onCreate(), cause in onPause() i will do a unbind to the service, so i dont get a serviceConnectionLeak, if i leave the activity. Now if i press the Home-Button and then switching to the HomeScreen, the Activity will unbind from the service, when i go back to the Activity from the Taskmanager, then onCreate() will not be called and if the Code is trying to access a function from the service i will get a null-pointer exception. If i bind and unbind only in onResume() and onPause() i dont have this problem.

I have a local Service to which multiple activites needs to bind. In the first launched Activity, bindService returns true and onServiceConnected is called. But in any additionally launched activites bindService returns false, and I can't get a reference to my Service.
How can multiple activities simultaneously be connected to a local Service?

I have the "engine" as a library project that handles all of the graphics rendering, game activity, and whatnot. Essentially, the library project has a class GameMain which has a background image, an array of drawables, and a few functions (the most important is a run() function). The projects that use this library extend this class with their own unique run() function. The idea is that games that use the engine start with their own activity, launch the GameActivity from the library, and pass their unique GameMain child object into the library, which should run the unique run() method thanks to polymorphism.
Getting this to work, however, has been a struggle. I originally attempted to make the GameMain Serializable, which didn't appear to work. I'm now attempting to make it a Parcelable, but it does not appear to run the child objects run() function when called from the library. I'm wondering, are Parcelable objects actually capable of sending Object methods across activities? Am I going about this the wrong way, or am I just having some other weird bug I have not uncovered?

My app consists of several Activities and each of that Activity needs access to the Client object to communicate to the server. 1) Can I put somewhere the Client object so that all Acitvities have an access to it? 2) If not I would probably need to pass the object to each Activity via Intent.putExtra(). But putExtra doesn't accept Object as an argument. It only accepts several types like int, long, String etc. So how can I pass an object to another Activity?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIn my application, I am trying to pass a serializable object through an intent to another activity. The intent is not entirely created by me, it is created and passed through a search suggestion.
In the content provider for the search suggestion, the object is created and placed in the SUGGEST_COLUMN_INTENT_EXTRA_DATA column of the MatrixCursor. However, when in the receiving activity I call getIntent().getSerializableExtra(SearchManager.EXTRA_DATA_KEY), the returned object is of type String and I cannot cast it into the original object class.
I tried making a parcelable wrapper for my object that calls out.writeSerializable(...) and use that instead but the same thing happened.
The string that is returned is like a generic Object toString(), i.e. com.foo.yak.MyAwesomeClass@4350058, so I'm assuming that toString() is being called somewhere where I have no control.

I was wondering what the simplest program for sending an object from my Android phone to my computer wirelessly (via LAN) would be. I have created Java RMI programs with a server and multiple clients, so I have a grasp of the concept. However with android I'm just not sure where to start.
What I am aiming to do is send some sort of information (could simply be text) to my computer and my computer will do an action. I have the GUI interface's and the actions to be carried out all worked out, just the sending of some sort of information is getting me.
Can anyone guide me as to how I can pass an object of a custom type from one Activity to another with the putExtra() method of Intent?

I currently have a service called ConnectionService. It instantiates a Connection object that gives me access to a controller of TCP.
I start the service from a splash screen activity, which sends and intent and starts my "main" activity once a connection has been established. In the "main" activity, I can access my Connection object and communicate with the controller. However, when I start a new activity from the "main" activity and bind to the service, I get a NullPointerException when I try to call methods in the ConnectionService.
