Can someone advise the am command (for adb shell) to run junit tests in the main thread please? I am writing an application in which i need to handle messages between the main thread(the deafult UI related thread) and the user created Gamethread.
The requirement is like this.
An activity(say "Activity_X") is setting the view by "setContentView(some "View_Y")". In "Activity_X" i have implemeted "onCreateOptionsMenu()" and "onOptionsItemSelected()" fucntions for creating menus & a switch case for action to be taken on selecting those menus.Menu has items like "resume/pause/zoom/" .
All action to be take on selecting these menus are implemented in "View_Y" in a separate Gamethread by extending "Thread" class.
So whenever a menu is selected in "Activity_X" i need to send a message to "View_Y". And on receiving this ,a particular action/method should be called in View_Y(GameThread).
How can i achieve this using Handlers?Is there any other way of doing this? Please do share with me some code snippets for these.

I have a separate thread running to get data from the internet. After that, I would like to update the ListView in the main thread by calling adapter.notifyDataSetChanged(). But it does not work. Any workaround for that?

The Android doc says "Like activities and the other components, services run in the main thread of the application process." Is the main thread here the same thing as UI thread?

I'm trying to run unit tests on the android platform in accordance with tutorial. Say, for example, I want to run tests for Email application. I open /apps/Email/tests/AndroidManifest.xml file, look for the <manifest> element, and look at the package attribute, which is com.android.email.tests, and in the <instrumentation> element I look at the android:name attribute, which is android.test.InstrumentationTestRunner.

I get the following stack trace when running my Android tests on the Emulator code...
I run my tests from an extra project. And it seems there are some problems with loading the classes from the other project. I have run the tests before but now they are failing. The project under tests runs without problems.
Line 14 of the Helper Class is:
this.httpHelper = new HttpHelper(userProfile);
I start a HttpHelper class that is responsible for executing httpqueries. I think somehow this helper class is not available anymore, but I have no clue why.

It appears that Android supports JUnit 3 out of the box.�However, I have some pre-existing JUnit 4 unit tests that I'd like to try on Android. I've tried adding the JUnit 4 jar to eclipse and compiling/ running the tests by pointing a standard JUnit run against them, but nothing seems to happen.�There's no evidence in the eclipse console or the Android emulator that any tests have been run.
Can anyone with knowledge about this subject comment?�Is it even possible to run JUnit 4 tests under Android, and if so, is there a step-by-step explanation as to how to achieve this (preferably under Jetbrains IDEA IDE, and/or Eclipse).

There are a lot of Android SDK APIs where callback handlers are registered. For a concrete example, with MediaPlayer you can set an onCompletionListener callback. Will these callbacks be called from the main (UI) thread? If the answer is "it depends", then I'm looking for some general rules for what callbacks will be called from the main thread versus another thread. The SDK documentation doesn't seem to spell it out. (Maybe I missed it) It seems important to know, because if I'm guaranteed main thread callbacks, then I can skip some thread synchronization on data shared between different places in code. If I'm forced to be pessimistic out of ignorance, then I have to write extra synch block code and worry about deadlocks, data integrity, and reduced performance.

"Hello, World" and "Hello, Testing" tutorials I created an android application created with Eclipse, along with a corresponding Android Test Project.The tests run fine once. After that, in order for me to run the tests again, I have to close the emulator.If I don't close the emulator, the Eclipse console get stuck on "Installing instrumentation android.test.InstrumentationTestRunner on device emulator-5554"... Nothing happens after that.I've been told to exit out of the application under test in the emulator in order to run the test again. Unfortunately the emulator doesn't have the app pulled up (it's in the normal "locked" position and when unlocked brings up the home screen) and even if I do pull it up then exit, it doesn't seem to let me run my tests again.All the example videos and tutorials all stop at the first run of a test. I have yet to see anyone anywhere run a test a second time!

I've created a class which is an extension of Thread. This class hits a web service and throws some data on screen. I don't care about persisting this data (the screen displays search results).
Currently, the user simply types into an EditText and clicks a search button. I'd like to take away the search button and implement something similar to Google's Instant Search where, as you type, the search results get updated.
This means, as the user types, the search parameters change. I want to be able to kill the currently running thread (if one is currently running) and spawn a new one with the new search string. How can this be achieved? Can I do it with Thread or will I need to use a new object?

I cannot run android junit tests for classes sitting in main android project that implement interfaces that reside in other included projects. Depending on SDK version I get different errors: from "Test run failed:" on 1.5 and 1.6 and spurious process death to a more polite "NoClassDefFoundError" on SDK 2.0. This happens only on instantiation of classes that reside in the Android project and implement interfaces residing outside that android project. There is no problem instantiating classes that do not fall into this category (i.e. android only or library only classes).
Android project by itself works fine with these classes - it is just the test set-up doesn't and project inclusion/classpath seems to be ok. Test project includes all projects that main project includes. NoClassDefFoundError makes little sense here given that the classloader can see and instantiate classes sitting right next to the ones that do not work. Did anyone else run into this or found a way to set-up android based tests in a multi-project set-up? I want to cancel a Toast to show the next one. I try to make several connection in a class and update the multiple progressbar in the main screen. Curious to know the reason behind not allowing updating UI elements from background thread in Android. Will main thread does something more (probably interacting with framework) after updating the UI elements so that changes can be seen on the screen? Is it the same case with other GUI tool kits?

Hi, I've noticed that on android, the call to pthread_join does not suspend the calling thread. I've a number (6) of new thread created using pthread_create and pthread_join is called on each thread. But It does not suspend the main (calling) thread. I believe this relates to the port of pthread lib to android.

Are we guaranteed that Application.onCreate() runs in the UI/main thread? I want to assume so but I can't find any information to make me 100 % sure. When I receive a broadcast I want to post a message onto the UI/main thread. Currently I've added a function in my Application class to return a handler (created in it's onCreate), is this a good solution? If not, what would be a better solution?

In my game when the user completes a stage, I want the main game thread to pause/sleep/wait and a new activity to be launched called StageClear that displays information about points scored etc. After this has been displayed and the user has pressed continue I want the original game thread to resume where it left off. I have tried to implement this but have so far been unsuccessful, probably because I'm new to dealing with multiple threads and also the idea of synchronizing them. I most recently tried to implement a shared package-visible object that could notify after wait was called on itself, but I am getting errors in eclipse so it won't even compile, I think because though the object is declared public in an inner class, it cannot be seen or recognised by my activity elsewhere in a file in the package. I have already built both activities but my issue is getting the main game one to launch the other, and pause whilst it waits for this activity to finish, before the main game thread continues execution.

How would I force the current thread to wait until another has finished before continuing. In my program the user selects a MODE from an AlertDialog, I want to halt executing of the program before continuing as the mode holds important configuration for the gameplay.

I have an Android project that I have been working on and debugging just fine for several months, but for some reason it is now consistently hanging at the "Runnning tests..." step. I have experienced intermittent hangs from the beginning, but a simple retry and/or restart of Eclipse or the emulator usually resolves it. But now I am just dead in the water.I can run my tests fine, and I can debug my actual program, but I can't debug my tests.I have tried creating a new emulator and that doesn't fix it. I also cleared all my breakpoints and that had no effect.As far as what has changed lately, the primary thing is that I upgraded to rev 7 of the SDK tools. Also, I recently did some debugging (of the program not the tests) on an actual device (not the emulator). Can't see how that would impact it but I thought I would mention it.Actually I had to set Debuggable to "true" in the app manifest to get device debugging to work. Although I have never had that set in my test project, I set it, and that also had no effect on the issue.I'm running out of ideas, and I would greatly appreciate some pointers.

My application starts a remote service and binds to it. If I close the application with the "back" button there are still some threads running (listed in the Debug View of Eclipse) - main thread, and three Binder threads. In onDestroy() I call unbindService(service_connection) - is there something else to clean up?
