Android : Handle Messages Between The Main Thread(the Deafult UI Related Thread) And The User Created Gamethread

May 21, 2009

I am writing an application in which i need to handle messages between the main thread(the deafult UI related thread) and the user created Gamethread.

The requirement is like this.

An activity(say "Activity_X") is setting the view by "setContentView(some "View_Y")". In "Activity_X" i have implemeted "onCreateOptionsMenu()" and "onOptionsItemSelected()" fucntions for creating menus & a switch case for action to be taken on selecting those menus.Menu has items like "resume/pause/zoom/" .

All action to be take on selecting these menus are implemented in "View_Y" in a separate Gamethread by extending "Thread" class.

So whenever a menu is selected in "Activity_X" i need to send a message to "View_Y". And on receiving this ,a particular action/method should be called in View_Y(GameThread).

How can i achieve this using Handlers? Is there any other way of doing this? Please do share with me some code snippets for these.

Android :: AsyncTask's Cancel Method - Possible Bug?

Jul 26, 2010

As far as I can tell, AsyncTask's cancel method doesn't work as advertised. I can't tell whether this is a bug, or me not understanding AsyncTask's cancel() method. I'm asking here instead of StackOverflow because I suspect it's a bug.

I understand from past discussions here that cancel() isn't meant to actually kill a thread (though the description of the mayInterruptIfRunning flag sure implies it is). But I'm also checking for isCancelled() (which is returning false), and trying to use the onCancelled callback (which isn't getting called), to no avail.

My situation is that I have a (short-running, one small network call) AsyncTask that begins in my Activity's onCreate. If the user backs out of the screen before it finishes though, I need to either cancel the AsyncTask entirely, or at least make sure its onPostExecute doesn't do any meaningful work.

In my activity's onDestroy handler, I call cancel() on the task, and then inside the task I have an onCancelled handler that sets a boolean. In my onPostExecute handler, I check isCancelled(), and I also check to see whether the boolean has been set from onCancelled, and neither are.

I'm using the debugger, and the order of operations is:

1) onDestroy(), calls task.cancel() 2) task's onPostExecute runs, isCancelled() returns false, so I have no conditional to stop the flow and that's it. onCancelled never runs.

What am I doing wrong here? I can't find any way to tell my task not to run its work in onPostExecute.

Android :: Popping Up Toast From A Thread

My user hits a button and kicks off a process that takes 3 steps in about 10 seconds total. I'd like to pop up Toast messages "Step 1", "Step 2", "Step 3", "Finished!" as the process progresses. I'm using the standard Java Thread interface to run the process in a thread and I've found that trying to pop up Toast from the thread causes an FC. What is the best way to report this kind of progress - step by step messages?

Android :: Posting Toast From Worker To UI Thread

Aug 8, 2010

I was trying to post a toast notification in case something goes wrong in a worker thread. I do this by putting a handler.post(funcFailed) in the catch block where funcFailed it a runnable and simply called a function funcFailedshow()

funcFailedshow() is defined to be Toast.makeText(App.this,"Error in funcfailed", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();

For some reason i cannot see the toast notification. Even if i replace App.this (app is the applications name) with a getApplicationContext() it does not work.

Android :: Posting Toast Message From A Thread

Nov 17, 2010

My application launches a thread to query the web for some data. I want to display a Toast message when nothing is found, but my application always crashes. I've tried using the application Context from within the thread, like so: Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "testttt", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); I've also tried creating a Runnable with the Toast call and calling runOnUiThread(runnable) from the Thread (the Toast call in this runnable uses the Activity as the first parameter). Does anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish this?

When the phone in vibrate mode I use the following code to stop the phone vibration:

vib.cancel();

While it worked on my Nexus One with android 2.1, it seems that it doesn't stop the vibration on an HTC Desire handset with android 2.1.
Have someone encountered this issue?

Android :: Inside Service Class / Executing Method For Toast From Scheduled TimerTask

Apr 30, 2010

I am trying to execute a {public void} method in Service, from scheduled TimerTask which is periodically executing. This TimerTask periodically checks a condition. If it's true, it calls method via {className}.{methodName};However, as Java requires, the method needs to be {pubic static} method, if I want to use {className} with {.dot}.The problem is this method is for notification using Toast(Android pop-up notification) and Status Bar.But for this to work, the method must not have {static} modifier and resides in Service class. So, basically, I want background Service to evaluate condition from scheduled TimerTask, and execute a method in Service class. Can anyone help me what's the right way to use Service, invoking a method when certain condition is satisfied while looping evaluation?

HTC EVO 4G :: Device Trying Toast's Root Method - Undo Damage

Sep 23, 2010

Here's what I've figured out. I tried doing Toast's root method for linux and the directions weren't idiot proof because I screwed them up. I've explained how far I've gotten in other threads. If that's relevant just ask and I'll explain exactly what I did.

Anyway my phone does the basics. It allows me to make phone calls, text, and look at the internet on the phone so this isn't an emergency but it I am worse off than I was before I tried to root because I can no longer use easytether.

I had no problem with easytether prior to the root attempt, and it still works when I hook it up with my wifes untampered evo. with my phone but with my wife's evo, I've never messed with that one, I have no trouble connecting with easy tether.

Some of the things I've noticed about the device since the attmept...
-I can't update to 2.2 via the OTA or any other method, my device says no updates are available.

-Simple root wasn't so simple, the phone never shut off and rebooted into boot screen like the red screen said it would in step 1.

How do I reset the device to the way it was the day it was purchased. I've got everything I need backed up. I'm ready to reset just tell me how.

HTC EVO 4G :: Easiest Method (Fresh / Toast) To Get Rooted Wireless Tether?

I just don't know what the downsides are for one over other other. I think that Fresh has tethering already built in but I don't know if there are issues with the SD card or other items. Or should I just get the stock ROM that is rooted over at XDA?

Android :: Callbacks Occur On Main (UI) Thread?

Oct 12, 2010

There are a lot of Android SDK APIs where callback handlers are registered. For a concrete example, with MediaPlayer you can set an onCompletionListener callback. Will these callbacks be called from the main (UI) thread? If the answer is "it depends", then I'm looking for some general rules for what callbacks will be called from the main thread versus another thread. The SDK documentation doesn't seem to spell it out. (Maybe I missed it) It seems important to know, because if I'm guaranteed main thread callbacks, then I can skip some thread synchronization on data shared between different places in code. If I'm forced to be pessimistic out of ignorance, then I have to write extra synch block code and worry about deadlocks, data integrity, and reduced performance.
