Android :: Main And Three Binder Threads Are Running After Application Close
May 21, 2009
My application starts a remote service and binds to it. If I close the application with the "back" button there are still some threads running (listed in the Debug View of Eclipse) - main thread, and three Binder threads. In onDestroy() I call unbindService(service_connection) - is there something else to clean up?

What are the advantages/disadvantages in placing a lengthy network access code in a thread in an activity or a thread in a service? How would it affect the application? I am writing a streaming audio player and from what I've read so far putting the code in a service will still end up blocking the application so a new thread is needed, does anyone know if it makes more sense to put this piece of code in a service.

Im wanting to stop all threads when my main activity closes as some are still running afterwards and are giving NullPointerException as they try to access Array Lists which no longer exist. however none of the obvious methods are working and they are also deprecated. is it possible as im currently using a try/catch statement as a workaround but would prefer a fix.

I would like to know how to run a listener on an isolated thread. Because I would like to use a LocationListener and make some calculations in the main thread. So the LocationListener would be "slow down", because of those calculations. Is it possible to have it run in a different thread? Or is it by default in a separate thread?

Just tried to delete a messages thread in the stock sms app that was 480 messages long. It was one thread of about 15 that were saved in my phone from people I communicate with on a regular basis. The phone froze up for about a minute, then message force closed. Opening up the messages app again reveals All of my threads have been wiped clean.

Are there any limits on the number of threads or any constraints on how the emulator (under Eclipse) schedules the application threads? I get suspended threads that don't really wait on anything but rather get bumped out from execution time. I will try using the Debug class to get some statistics on the thread alloc etc. even though the DDMS does that already. One example is, I have a simple class that simply prints a '.' every 3 seconds - well, the LogCat shows the emulator collecting garbage objects but the thread is suspended and does not print the '.'

Just curious what the bugs are that everyone talks about with 2.2
The only bug I notice is when I disable BT it mentions something about a SIM card.

I have a project that builds against Android v2.1 . I can run it fine on a phone running 1.5 but when I try to launch it with an emulator running 1.5, the emulator doesn't show up on the list of available AVDs. I have the <uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="3"/> tag in my manifest but it doesn't make a difference.

things like Skype, amazon MP3, City ID ... etc. my battery has dropped significantly since 2.2 and i think it's because of these many new apps running in the back ground. anyone know how to stop these apps from running?

Is there a way to manage application activities by hand, like this: user activating an application from menu, it does some initialization, then creates some activity (is it necessar y to declare all activities in the application manifest?), and listens to it's events. On some event application decides to close one activity and open another - so it contains all the application logic. Didn't found anything like this in examples, they all have all the logic in the activity classes. Maybe I need to user Services? (Maybe I don't understand right, what an activity represents. For me it's like window in windows, or Displayable in j2me) I'm very new to android development, trying to understand the basics.

I created an application which enables the user to set whether he wants to receive notification while the application runs in background mode. If the notifications are enabled an activity should be started (the dialog should appear on the screen).
I tried to enabled it the following way:
CODE:...........
This is the method from main activity. When onPause() is executed isRunningInBackground is set true.
When I tried to debug it when the main application was running in the background the line
startActivity(intent) had no effect (the activity didn't appear).
Does anyone know how to midify the logic in order to start an activity from the main activity when the main activity is running in the background (after onPause() is called)?

Just got the new Droid X. Coming from a windows mobile phone (which I hated) I have a question on the android OS. It seems that when you are done with an app you just have to hit the menu button again.. but this leaves it in memory running.. is there anyway to close the and and just leave it? I did download the Advanced app killer but that seems silly to have to pick from a list of what you want closed.. I see no way to just close the app you are in.. it should be a default option for every app.. I hope I am just not finding it.. and it is there somewhere..

Swiping to close each app all the time is inefficient for me. I realize other people might not want this but I want whatever app I was using to completely close when I tap the home button. There is one app that puts an X on your homescreen that closes everything when clicked. That is a little better but I want to go one step further and have the home button do the same thing. Is there anything out there for that?

I "register" my acitivity in manifest file, but I can't see it in list of application. When I open manage application setting it's written that my apk is installed. I searched about it everywhere. Even in faq of Android Development there is post about but I did all this things.

Curious to know the reason behind not allowing updating UI elements from background thread in Android. Will main thread does something more (probably interacting with framework) after updating the UI elements so that changes can be seen on the screen? Is it the same case with other GUI tool kits?

I want to hide my application icon from main menu at the run time. I believe that a filter with category Launcher in the application's manifest file is responsible for the application's presence in the main menu. Is there any way to change the category at run time? or any other way to hide the icon from main menu?

I have been watching the Google I/O presentation by Virgil Dobjanschi on the correct way to implement REST on Android with services and content providers. http://code.google.com/events/io/2010/sessions/developing-RESTful-android-apps.html
Based on the video I'm doing things the wrong way, which is not surprising given how hard the right way is. Anyway, having been shown the promised land in the video I'm having a bit of a problem figuring out how to get there.
I have most of it nailed but the one thing that's defeating me is the Binder Callback that Virgil references in the slides (see link above), on page 43 it shows step 2 as starting the service with startService( intent ) and step 10 as returning status information using a Binder Callback. There is no example code anywhere in the presentation which is rather frustrating. There is talk of open sourcing the Twitter client which apparently uses this approach but nothing yet and the announcement was in April.
In the video he states: "What is a binder callback? A binder callback, think of it as an interface that was passed in the request intent."
I have searched all over the place but have not been able to find any doc or examples that show how to pass a callback as part of an intent. Nor can I figure out any other way of passing in a callback.
I thought he may be referring to binding to the service and implementing the callback that way. However, he is specifically referring to a local service and using strarSerice() and not bindService(). Also with bindService() the service will be destroyed if the activity is destroyed which defeats the idea. The workaround is to use startService() and then bindService() and leave the service running for the duration. The other problem with bindService() is that the callback can not be use until onServiceConnected() completes which complicates the code even further as the action instructions can not be passed in the intent because the return callback may not be in place in time to return the results.

How to fix the MMS issue with MIUI V5 on the HTC One XL(AT&T version). I noticed that the One S has a fix, however I can't figure out what they are saying about replacing the framework files and what not. If your not familiar with the issue, trying to send/receive MMS causes the messaging app to force close.

Recently dived into the Android world, buying myself a HTC desire about 2 weeks ago.
So far, I love the setup, features and feel, the only thing I'm a little worried about is a little bit of lag.
I know the phone is renown for its processor speed and RAM, but scrolling through things like my SMS threads, the application list, and Friend Stream it is a bit 'jittery' and a little laggy. Every now and then an application like Facebook or the SMS application will crash on me. And I know I'm a rather fast texter, but when I'm texting sometimes the phone cannot quite keep up with what I'm writing.
I have no unusual applications installed and do not use task killers.
Is this normal? Or might there be some reason why its functioning a little slower than it should.

I've implemented an onSaveInstanceState function in the main activity of my TabHost-based application. I need to save the state of various objects I am keeping in memory that I have all marked as serializable, as well as some basic int and string values. I have stepped through my application and watched it call the onSaveInstanceState function and presumably save everything without any manner of exception or problem. The issue is that my onCreate function is being called with a null Bundle value every time after I start the application again. I'm really at a loss and unsure why it would call the save but not pass anything into the create.

I currently have a lot of problems with this error. I programmed a widget and a service that runs in the background. This service is updating the widget on different occasions (position changed, screen turned on, timer based...) with images and text it's loading from a server. After a couple of updates I always get an error from the JavaBinder, at least that's what DDMS says. Reproducing the problem with my app is quite easy but I just can't figure out what's going on there.
