Android :: Repeating Alarms With AlarmManager And Daylight Saving / Leap Years

Feb 9, 2009

I'm looking for a way to trigger repeated actions. I'd like the user to be able to choose the intervals at which these actions will be executed. One should be able to choose from intervals like "Every Day", "Every Month", and "Every Year". The setRepeating(int, long, long, PendingIntent) method of the android.app.AlarmManager class only supports a long value for choosing the interval between the execution of the pending intent. My problem now is, that I can not just compute the number of milliseconds that "fit into one day", since not all days have the same length (daylight saving). This is also a problem for the interval type "year" (leap years).

I had a quick look at the android.os.Handler class, but as I understood the documentation I'd need to keep a service thread running for my actions to be executed at some future time. I don't consider that a good option for my needs ;-) Is there anything in the API I could configure with a cron expression or the like? I was also thinking about scheduling an alarm with the AlarmManager for a single execution at a given date/time and then having a receiver that does the rescheduling according to a cron expression attached to the intent. But I don't know if I just got something completely wrong here and I'm reinventing the wheel with that approach

Android :: Alarms (AlarmManager) Cleared On Reboot

Jun 17, 2009

Is there a recommended way of resetting these alarms? The only way i can think of is registering a receiver for boot time, have it re-read the database and recreate the alarms but that seems so overkill. Why on earth would they be designed to be cleared on reboot?! :/

Motorola Droid : Make Repeating Alarms For Calendar Events?

Nov 12, 2009

Any one know of a way to make a calendar event reminder repeat until the user cancels the reminder. Such that if I have a meeting and if I miss the first time that the notification goes off (I'm usually in vibrate only or I use very short very high frequency tones) I'd like the tone to repeat at regular intervals (say every 1 or 2 minutes) until I acknowledge that I'm heading to the meeting. Anyone have an idea for anything like that?

Blackberry didn't do this by default either and there was a WONDERFUL app called BerryBuzz that would allow you to customize notifications to the hilt. In other words different LED colors for each email account or for text messages (or whatever else you could think of) and you could not only have a different sound for them but when the repeating alarm went off you could also individually configure that alarm. Something like this would be really awesome if there was a similar app on Android.

Android :: Date.getTime() And Daylight Saving Time?

What will Date.getTime() returns in a region with Daylight Saving Time enabled? Does this function returns a DST time or not? I call Date.getTime() in a place with DST (such as U.S.), and convert it to a local time in China (no DST), I get a wrong time (one hour ahead of local time in China). How can I fixed this problem?Maybe I didn't tell tings clearly, but we don't use DST in China... I don't understand DST very well.

Android :: Handcent Timestamp Glitch - Daylight Saving?

Nov 8, 2010

I'm a Verizon user in the US Pacific time zone (GMT-8) and ever since daylight saving ended yesterday, I've had a glitch on my incoming message non-Verizon timestamps...they come in as GMT. I just received one at 1:42pm and it says 5:42am. This has been happening all day yesterday and today on messages sent from non-Verizon customers but the ones from my Verizon-using wife are just fine. I can't find any way to fix it in the software itself.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini/pro :: Handle Daylight Saving Time With Calendar?

Oct 26, 2010

I'm the new owner of an X10 and I'm, so far ;-), really happy about it. I still have an issue that prevent me to throw away my old Palm agenda. I have a Google Calendar that is synchronised to both my Palm and now mu X10. I notice a strange "one hour shift" issue with my X10: every appointment after the Daylight Saving Time is shifted from one hour on the X10. I figure that this is related to the way the X10 handle the daylight saving: the automatic setting for the time zone is GMT+02:00:HMG+2:00 whereas Google calendar says correctly that Paris is on the GMt+01:00 with a one hour shift due to summer time. Is there a way to fix this issue that prevent me from using the agenda?

Android :: Searchable Calendar That Import 10 Years Of Outlook Data

I recently bought a DroidX and am looking to import 10 years of Outlook calendar info. I don't need to do a two-way synch as I am using Touchdown for Exchange synchronization and it works great (but it is not good with large calendar history files). I just need a stand-alone calendar app that has it's own data file and can import my Outlook calendar history and allow me to search.

Or maybe someone can code/hack it. just reverse the order. make one tap go to leap view, and two taps go to main home.

Somehow the phone decided I was in the Mountain time zone instead of central. why/how that would happen? If I uncheck the automatic, and manually change my time zone it works fine.

Android :: Reliable Repeating Background Task?

Aug 31, 2009

I'm trying to run a background task which runs every minute or so for an android application but I am struggling to ensure that the task actually runs every minute. I've tried a variety of approaches from using SystemClock.sleep() to the AlarmManager (both repeating alarm and a fixed alarm) but it seems that unless the device is charging any kind of repeating system has a variable repeat rate once the device is unplugged. Is there any way to run a stable consistently repeating service?

Android :: AlarmManager And BootReceiver

Feb 24, 2010

I think I'm reading some conflicting statements about the AlarmManager on the Android docs website. The following statements both exist on this page:

http://developer.android.com/reference/android/app/AlarmManager.html

[at the top]

"Registered alarms are retained while the device is asleep (and can optionally wake the device up if they go off during that time), but will be cleared if it is turned off and rebooted."

- and -

[under setRepeating()]

"This alarm continues repeating until explicitly removed with cancel(PendingIntent)"

So, the question is, do I need to register a BootReceiver that re-sets my Alarms when the phone turns on. The first statement makes me think I do, but the second statement is worded in a way that would lead one to believe that it would live forever, unless a cancel() call on that Intent is called.

So, which statement do I believe or am I misinterpreting one of the statements? I suppose when the power is turned off or back on, Android itself could call the cancel() function on all alarms. I guess it would help if it said that after the second sentence.
