Android :: Can A Native Application Use Java Methods In Telephony Manager?
Sep 17, 2009
I am currently working on porting a application written in C in android platform. I need to know that can i invoke/call the getSystemService from the C application using invocation interface by JNI. Meaning using a .java file which will interact with the interace provided by the android.telephony.TelephonyManager.java for using getCallState() and other mehthods.

I have a native application that I would like to start from a Java interface. Does anyone know of a good way of doing this? can start the application using adb, with no problems. I can also start the application using Runtime.exec(), but that doesn't work so well for me; I need the application to run outside of a Java Runtime Process. Any ideas?

I have developed bluetooth application where native library will be initiated by Java application (using JNI wrapper). JNI will call the entry function of the native library and then it will create Pthread to for scanning the device. Once Scanning is over, i will get the callback which i registered during the entry function of the native lib (called by app). But i haven't received the callback, but if i run the same native library in the shell (executable from the shell terminal) it is working fine. Can any one help me, if there is any specific architecture needs to follow while developing Java application based on native lib?

I am trying to run a native executable from inside an android java application. The native executable exists in my assets. At start of activity, I copy it from assets to my application cache Dir. then I use Process Builder to run it.I tried to run "chmod 777" on the file and on cache directory containing it and I ensured permissions are granted using adb shell. but I still get this permission exception.

I have low expectations that this message will get any response as it seems that Google developers do not like to address issues too close to the Android core and to strategic mobility applications. However, as they say, hope is the last to die.
I am really puzzled by the lack of response to queries about issues with some TelephonyManager functions.
Specifically, there have been a number of requests in the past, including mine, about
getNeighboringCellInfo()
As per the link below, getNeighboringCellInfo() is a documented TelephonyManager function available to application developers.
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/telephony/TelephonyMan...()
Yet, getNeighboringCellInfo() does not work. Any attempt to call it in an application results in application failure.
What is the problem here? If Google does not want application developers to use this function (I cannot fathom why that would be the case), then please remove it from TelephonyManager, and save all of us time and frustration.
It's really puzzling that for such an open platform Android has so many secrets and rules.

I would like to know what are the main differences between TelephonyManager and PhoneStateListener, because you can do (more or less) the same things with both. For example, you could create an incoming calls register implementing a broadcastreceiver and using TelephonyManger API or extending PhoneStateListener class and registering this new listener throughTelephonyManager . Case 1 - BroadcastReceiver (TelephonyManager)

Is there a way to look up the user phone number other than TelephonyManager? In my G1, this returns null: // get your phone number TelephonyManager telephonyManager = (TelephonyManager) getSystem Service (Context. TELEPHONY_SERVICE); String tel = telephonyManager.getLine1Number(); Log.i("Telephone Number ==> ", tel+" <=="); Is there any other way of getting user's own phone number? take care, Muthu Ramadoss. http://linkedin.com /in/tellibitz http://androidrocks.googlecode.com - Android Consulting. I am trying to produce a java front end, via some sort of Android "view" that will allow me to show the console output from a native C/C++ application binary. I followed the steps from various google searches and I have a tool chain that produces native binarys that I can then "adb push" onto the android device. I can either use the adb shell or a console application like ConnectBot to native to the pushed path and run the binary like so: ./someApplicationHowever as I stated in my opening sentence I would like to wrap this binary with a font end producing an apk that can be loaded onto the phone and when it runs it opens up and directs the stdio output from the native binary to the screen.

So I'm writing an Android app which uses a large c++ library. I have everything working so that the java app can call the c++ delegation methods, but I'm finding myself wishing I could log messages from c++ to the Android log. This is easy from java, but I'm at a loss as to how to call a java method from c++. My searches found methods for opening a jvm from c++, which is not at all what I want to do. Ideally, I'd like to pass a log method pointer to c++, which could then be used whenever I wanted. Of course, java doesn't support method pointers.

I have an Java class with a static final method getAll:
CODE:..............
Now I want to hand in null as a value for the where statemant so that it will just be ignored later on in the code. Anyway in the testcase for this method I have: Vector<Category> categories = Category.getAll(context, null);
Which then in turn gives me a NoSuchMethodError. I don't know exactly why it does that. The only thing I could imagine is that the null I hand in would not match the signature of the above method. But how can I overcome this? I already thought of overloading. But this would just end in rewriting most of the code. At least when I do it, how I think.
This is the stack trace I get:

Hi, custom classes which are part of a framework, so nothing graphical. One of those (singleton) classes is a Logging class which send logs to my server. I noticed that even though I can call the classes methods in my service it actually won't be logging anything... In my specific example it's osmething like : Logger.getInstance().log("Whatever I want to Log"); Obviously the getInstance is a static method so it can be accessed from anywhere within my project right away.. I was wondering though why this method for example isn't getting called ? Also how do I debug a Service ? Btw I am using of IPC from one of my Activities which gets bound to the service and can start/stop the music for example...

I am trying to figure out what is the best way to debug a mix of Java and native code? Please notice, that I am NOT trying to develop a native app. The app will be written entirely in Java, using Android SDK. However, I noticed that some pieces of the SDK use native methods (e.g. AssetManager, WebKit, etc). I wonder which tools Google developers use if/when they need to debug a mix of Java and C/C++ code? Eclipse/gdb or there are commercial tools which make the debugging experience less painful?

I have a multithreaded streaming app which has mainly the following 5 threads. 1 Main App(UI) Thread 1 controller thread (in native) 1 audio decoder thread (in native) 1 video decoder thread(in native) 1 thread to query the head position of audio (in Java) Apart from this I have video rendering with OpenGL. My problem is, if I query the thread priority using the Thread.getPriority method (my native threads make callbacks to Java and I am making the query at that point of time), I am getting the priority of each of them as 5. For my audio query thread (the last one in the list) I am explicitly setting the priority using Process.setThreadPriority(Process.THREAD_PRIORITY_URGENT_AUDIO); Also for my decoder threads, I am giving higher priority than my controller thread(using pthread APIs in native). But still finally all of them seem to have same priority. Also what should I be doing to increase the priority of my threads(both from Java and native)?

Is it possible, from within my android java app, to capture an image of what is on the screen, even if it was written using native (ndk)? I do not wish to take screen shots of other apps, just my own. I can already capture and image of a canvas that I am aware of, but is there a view or canvas or something like it that always represents what is on the screen, so that a) I don't have to capture the separate views images and recompile them, and b) I can see what my native (jni) code is doing with the graphics too?

Need help closing/accessing my views in a simple app (included an img of my program layout) but I might have been too confusing. Basically, I have an app that has a main menu where the user can click a button to open a camera. The user then snaps a photo and it is displayed on a page. The user will then click another button that detects faces. If faces are detected, the user is sent to a final page that shows the cropped face, etc. I give the user the ability to return to the main menu or snap a new photo.
Let's say a new photo is snapped and the user does it a few more times. Now I have multiple saved instances of old snapped photos (presented on the layout). How do I kill the previous instance (the layout from before he decided to snap a new photo)? So when I try to close the app it doesn't go back to the previous instance (displayed layout of said snapped photo). I am so confused on this one thing.

I currently have an app that has many activities and needs to have a way of maintaining state between these activities.
I use the Application class to do this, declaring my global variables and using getters and setters to interact with my activities.
I was hoping to place a few custom methods in there, so that when I want to do a common task like, for instance, display an error message, I can declare the method in my application class and call it from any activity that uses it
EscarApplication application = (EscarApplication) this.getApplication();
EscarApplication being the name of my application class above.
I have tried to include this method in my application class:
CODE:.....
In the hope that I can call this method from activity without having to redeclare it, but when I call it using something like below I get an null pointer exception:
Visit.this.application.showError("Update error", "An error has occurred while trying to communicate with the server");
Visit being the name of my current activity above.
Should this work, or can I only use getters and setters to change global vars in an Application Class.
EDIT Stack Trace:
CODE:...............
The dialog is declared as such in the application class:AlertDialog alertDialog;
Created in that same class:alertDialog = new AlertDialog.Builder(this).create();
And the method to call it in that class is as follows:
CODE:.............
And finally, it is called from an activity like so:
CODE:........................

I have an activity that starts AsyncTask and shows progress dialog for the duration of operation. The activity is declared NOT be recreated by rotation or keyboard slide.
CODE:............
Once task completed, I dissmiss dialog, but on some phones (framework: 1.5, 1.6) such error is thrown:
CODE:...............
My code is:
CODE:................
From what I have read (http://bend-ing.blogspot.com/2008/11/properly-handle-progress-dialog-in.html) and seen in Android sources, it looks like the only possible situation to get that exception is when activity was destroyed. But as I have mentioned, I forbid activity recreation for basic events.

I would like to be able to use the OpenGL API from both Java and C (via NDK).
In Java, there is a GL object passed, which has all GL methods on it.
In C, you just talk to the native library.
In a single onDrawFrame callback (for which Java is passed a GL), can I use methods on the GL object, and also call NDK methods which access the openGL library?
In other words, is the GL object just a wrapper for the same instance of the native library?
