Android :: Portable JDBC Vs SQLite
Aug 11, 2010
I am using SQLite in a project used by an android application. Currently I am using the SQLite implementation provided in android.database.sqlite.
I want to make a desktop application which uses the same codebase. So I need to separate all the shared behaviour into a separate portable project/jar.
My problem is I'm currently making heavy use of android.database.sqlite. If possible I do not want to re-write every database access call to be compatible with JDBC or whatever I will have to use without using the android provided SQLite.
To solve this problem with minimal impact on the existing code. I intent to write a SQLite interface (compatible with android.database.sqlite) which the shared code will use... on android it will be implemented trivially by android.database.sqlite, and on the desktop it will be implemented by somehow mutilating SQLite through JDBC to match android.database.sqlite.
This is proving difficult as I often supply Object[] arrays to be bound to prepared statements which JDBC requires strict typing, and I am not familiar with JDBC at all.
Is there any other way to use SQLite in Java which is similar to android.database.sqlite, or any other approaches which may save me the effort (and inevitable debugging) associated with re-writing many database access points?
Disclamer: I have never until now tried using JDBC.
Simplified question: What is the best way to use SQLite in java? JDBC, other?

Does Android provide an API for JDBC to SQLite? What I found around are Java wrappers or native drivers but not sure these are compatible with Android. Anyone has any pointers to info I can use
I have created the db using the adb shell and all I need to do is to connect to the db from an activity and run a simple query to retrieve and file.

I'm looking for a PND on which i can install android.
For example: http://www.medion.com/de/electronics/prod/MEDION%C2%AE+GoPal%C2%AE+P4440+EU/30010109A1?category=navigation_28&recId=&wt_mc=de.intern.m-shop.pro-pla.on-ma&wt_cc1=m-shop_topseller_navigation-2-links&wt_cc2=30010109A1&wt_cw=30.2.8&utm_source=Internetseite-intern&utm_medium=Kachel&utm_content=navigation_2-links&utm_campaign=Kategoriekachel-Hotspots&utm_term=30010109A1
I would like to install Android - not on a mobile phone, like it's commonly down - but on a navigation device. In doing so I want to completely remove the old operating system and replace it with Android. Is this even possible, provided the hardware matches Android's requirements, or are there other criteria to be aware of ?

I'm looking at how Android supports wifi portable hot spot functionality with a view to writing simple home screen widget that allows people to turn the phone's wifi hotspot on and off without digging into the device settings.
There was nothing obvious at developer.android.com so I dug through my copy of the Android source code and found that the WifiManager class (android.net.wifi.WifiManager) provides the basics to allow the state to be queried. So as well as 'getWifiState()' there is 'getWifiApState()' and a matching set of state constants.
However, in my bang-up-to-date Eclipse IDE, this class has none of the Ap methods or constants. Can anyone shed any light on this?

I have heard of people who have successfully run mapreduce on a google nexus one. There is no more info on the performance of running a full clustered mapreduce on android.
I would really like to run mapreduce on my phone on a relatively small amount of data non clustered mode, is it really worth it to use the hadoop completely ? is there a stripped version available anywhere? any alternatives?

It bugs me that some phones are omitting the lanyard loops. Look at the Nexus One that doesn't have it: http://gizmodo.com/5451349/look-at-this-broken-nexus-one
iPhone didn't have it.
Pretty lame that some phones now are designed without this feature.

I plan on writing a Java 3D game that will work both on PC and Android. Unfortunately it looks like there is no common OpenGL API for both platforms.Do the APIs differ significantly? Is there a way I could use the same 3D code in both versions? Is it a good idea?

So I upgraded from my Droid X to an Galaxy Nexus. I have a perfectly good - freshly sbf'd Droid X that none of my family wants or needs so I'm thinking it could be a decent portable gaming device for my boys when we travel. Just toss it in the Otterbox and let em have at it.
I always see the iPhone folks talk about giving their kids their old iPhones to use as an iTouch and I'm thinking I'd like to do that with my DX if it's feasible.
I'm just not sure it would work as well. Can I simply create a new gmail acct to register it at when going thru the setup we we can download some free games from the Market? What about the phone activation process - can I just skip that?

I am developing apps using elipse Juno and I want to use my phone, Sony Xperia tipo, as my avd. I have connected it to the pc using the usb cable. However when I go to Window->Preferences->Android->SDK Location->Browse the phone does not show up.
As of today there are no specific usb drivers from the Sony website, just the pc companion.
Is there another way of running self developed apps on my phone? Preferably through the usb port.

Hey, does anyone know if, or think that, they'll make a collapsible butterfly keyboard for the Droid? Sitting in it's dock it looks great If I could hook a "full-size" keyboard to it I'd use it as a bit of an emergency laptop when needed. It'd make handling e-mails much easier at the airport, etc. I used to use one all the time on my Palm PDA. With the much bigger screen here it makes much more sense.

I am getting ready for a backpacking trip and taking my Droid along. As of now, I seem to be out of luck as to find a charger that will properly charge my phone when away from the normal means of charging. Has anyone used any portable batteries with their Droid? Right now, I have an APC Universal Battery 10WH and it doesn't charge my Droid at all. I am looking at the Just Mobile Gum Pro 4400mAh.
I have found that the Droids are very picky about where they get their charges from. I have a wall to usb and a car usb converter that doesn't work with mine or 3 other Moto Droids but will work with any other device that will charge via USB (iPod, GPS, other phones, etc.) Also, I have seen that the Minty Boost will charge the Droid, but their kits are backordered right now.

I did search and read the other threads, but has anyone had experience with portable chargers with the Eris?
I am headed to Bonnaroo and I am sure I'll be using the phone a lot so I was looking at the smaller portable chargers that run off of AA batteries. Figuring I'll need a mid day charge so I want a smaller one to throw in my pack.

I have a Motorola Droid 4 Smart Phone and I would like to be able to access my Verbatim 500GB portable hard drive with it. I have tons of PDF books and other files I would love to access via my phone. I have purchase a 5000mah battery to plug the phone and hardrive into so power is mot a problem. Is there a proceedure for doing this or some kind of program I need??
I personally think this would be an awsome thing to be able to do. Espcially for any smart phone! Just think it would be like having access to your big computer off your phone. I keep my whole computer data on several portable hard drive. When I want access I just plug them into a computer. If I have a computer issue I very seldom loose my data. I have it all backed up on data dvd's and can always put it on another portable hard drive. I can take my whole computer data base any where and use any handy computer.

After reading a great post in the forum I setup my HTC Inspire 4G phone to teather...it works great! I followed the same steps on my fiancee's Inspire 4G and it didn't work so well. When I click the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot box in Settings > Wireless & Networks it turns on the Wi-Fi...and it is detectable by other devices...but then it immediately and automatically turns off.
We have the same phone purchased on the same day and I used the same Access Point Name settings as detailed in the excellent Android Forum thread. I even deleted and re-created the Access Point to make sure I didn't mistype anything but the same Portable Wi-Fi turns on then immediately turns off problem exists.

This is technically a Win7 question, but much related to Android. On my older Android devices, when connected to PC via USB for file transfer, they would "mount" the SD card as a standard disk drive within Windows. On my newer Android devices, however, they instead connect the device to Windows as a "portable media player." This is fine, except for one thing which really irks me. Every time the portable media player director structure comes up, it is displayed as giant icons. If I change it to "list" or "detail" view within Windows, there are two big problems:
- it doesn't stick (i.e. I'll reconnect later and it will be back to giant icon view)
- it doesn't apply recursively to all subfolders
With regular Win7 file explorer (i.e. for disk drives), it is really easy to set a default folder view for all disk drives on the whole system, and it will stick forever, and apply to all subfolders on every drive. Is it possible to do the same thing with portable media players?

Just wondering I have the above phone, and ever since I bought it, I cant seem to configure my personal hotspot SSID and passcode, without it defaulting back to AndroidAP and default passcode I enter in my desired SSID and passode, click save, and if I go to conect on laptop it will come up ok, but only that one time. If I literally go straight back into the configuration of wifi hotspot, it has defaulted back to AndroidAP

Has anyone had any luck with aftermarket power supply's. I'd like a car/ac charger or a stand alone power pack. I usually use my DEXIM. but it does not work with the Behold 2. I've tried a car charger/battery unit by Wireless Gear that said it was compatible with all Samsung phones, it came with 5 power tips and a USB outlet that still would not work, even using the OEM USB cable. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will go with OEM Samsung if necessary, but there selection is limited.
