Android : Open ID For Apps That Require Sign In / Supporting Framework?
Jul 25, 2010
I am a fresh developer on Googles Android Platform - my HTC Desire arrived last week. Now i need a way to sign in to my existing application (Java, currently running on jetty). The server Application is developed using spring security 3.0.2
In my case, i want to support the following: If a user has set up his Android phone with a googlemail/google-Account (and most users do) i want to use this account credentials to automagically log in to my server app.
Is there any Android framework supporting that use-case? Or are there any alternatives? I read: http code.google.com intl/de-DE/apis/accounts/docs/OpenID.html
How we do sign in with an app on google AppEnging is described here: http://blog.notdot.net/2010/05/Authenticating-against-App-Engine-from-an-Android-app

I am under the impression that android apps can require other apps to be installed in other to operate. The main example I know is the zxing barCode scanner app, which gets used by a number of other apps. The zxing barcode app is free, but I was wondering what would happen if it wasn't?In particular, what would the user experience be like? How would they be notified, if at all, about the paid app requirement?

Is anyone aware of a listing of apps that require Android 2.1 to run (e.g. apps like Google Goggles, etc.)? I've searched the threads here at Android Forums and elsewhere and haven't been able to find such a list or site.
Now that I upgraded to 2.1, I'd like to "see what I've been missing" and take advantage of the new OS.

So, I'm just switching from the iPhone and I am getting used to how the Droid pushes out it's notifications. The iPhone obviously didn't have apps running in the background and it completely relied on push notifications. I am trying to figure out what programs I can kill in Advanced Task Killer that won't block from notifications coming in. Is there any way to tell?

We developed the popular mobile travel application TripCase (http:// www.tripcase.com) natively for the iphone, backberry, winmo, and recently Android. We really like the Android framework compared to the others, but found some of it's concepts like Activities to be very cumbersome when dealing with screen based applications like ours. We have many forms and workflows, lots of viewable and editable data, and we make many calls to our back-end Rails server. In order to streamline our development efforts on Android we created a small convention-based micro-framework which we are calling DynaDroid and would like to open it up to the Android community for use.
http://code.google.com/p/dynadroid/
Here are some of the features that you get with DynaDroid:
* The entire micro-framework is housed within a singe Activity, so sharing data between screens is finally easy again.
* Code by convention and all your xml layouts and menus are dynamically available.
* Screen management for pushing, popping, and swapping screens (all with transition animations).
* Screen orientation (landscape, portrait) can be controlled on a screen by screen basis.
* Error reporting support built-in, so if your app crashes a report is sent to you.
And there is more to come:
* More dynamic coding conventions - let's get rid of all those if/ else and case statements!
* Built-in screen analytics for tracking user interaction
* Simplified device to server communication with xml/json parsing and automatic error handling * Extensions to Android UI components without all the plumbing
* Easier to use api for interacting with device capabilities (camera, gps, phone, etc.)
We would love your feedback on the micro-framework. So please let us know what you would like in the future. And if you have any questions or issues our Google group is located here:
http://groups.google.com/group/dynadroid
Remember DynaDroid is already being used in the production Android application TripCase, so it's been thoroughly tested and is ready for prime-time.

I am new to the rooting scene, I can tell you all the apps that are needed for a jailbroken Iphone, but I don't know where to start when it comes to root. Yes I did a "root" search on the market, and I am so ignorant I don't know what the apps are for or capable of.I already know root explorer is a must, other than that I have nothing.

I rooted my phone and have Damage 2.07.2 running, I am attempting to install Wireless Tether, however something seems off about my Superuser Permissions Application, upon Wireless Tether starting I have Superuser Permissions App come up but the screen on the App is blank, I wait a moment and then have to wait or force close. It seems as though none of the Apps that require root are working properly.

When I go to the Play website I have to log in before I can do anything. However, from my phone or tablet I can install as many free apps as they want with no password required.
My kids are getting tablets but I don't want them to be able to install anything on their own, including free apps.

I didnt have a smartphone for a while and i just got a shining new nexus 4.
I want to installs all the apps out there but i realise many of them require permissions that (i think) are not actually needed by the app to do whatever it needs to do..
For example i want to install power toggles it asks to use my camera... cant the flashlight be turned on without allowing the camera to be used?
Anyways, i realise that apps that sometimes do the exact same things require different permissions, hence... ?
So main question is: is the permission to use the camera really required by an app that turns on the led?

I'm brand new to this world of mobile Internet.I feel like a kid in a candy store with all the neat apps out there for my new 3G.I was wondering, among all the endless apps out there, is there an app which allows me to open other apps simply by saying their names? Ex. "open Settings", "open Google Maps", "open Pandora".I just know it's gotta' be out there.

Just curious for an opinion or two I've been tempted to download Open Home from Better Android because of all their cool icons, skins, and other things. At the same time, I see comments about it slowing down the phone significantly or causing all sorts of forced closes, etc.Are most people using and liking Better Android apps? I've got an HTC Dream, so I'm on the old operating system. Not sure if that makes a difference.

On a few apps I have downloaded I am unable to actually open the app. The app does not show up in my apps list and when I open it in the marketplace it says it's installed but the "open" button is grayed out. Anyone know if I'm doing something wrong or if it's an app error? This has only happened on about 4 apps I've downloaded. The most recent one is BatterLife.

I've been using a droid eris for a couple of months now and have loved the experience so far. Unfortunately, the honeymoon is over and I've been trying to do some productive things with it (outside of playing Robo Defense that is =p).I've been having problems opening different types of documents. My two biggest problems are with Quickoffice and PDF Viewer. When I launch Quickoffice, I get the "Open file" window which takes a few seconds to load and a few files begin to populate in the list. After just a couple of seconds, I get a force close message stating: Sorry! The application Quickoffice (process com.qo.android.htc) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" This same thing happens with the PDF Viewer as well. However, I can use a file manager like Linda Manager to browse to a specific file and then open it within the program just fine. I honestly don't know where to start

I currently have an app on the market that supports Android 1.5 (SDK level 3) and up. It also takes advantage of several features that are only present in Android 2.0 (SDK level 5) and up. I do this using Reflection.
I read a post on the Android Developer Blog that talks about how to support these new features while using no Reflection, which would be amazing. http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/07/how-to-have-your-cupcake-and-eat-it-too.html <uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="3" android:targetSdkVersion="5" />
I have tested this out and while it works there is one huge downfall. Currently if I try to add a SDK level 5 class, but I don't know that it's a SDK level 5 class, there is no worries. Eclipse isnt going to find the class and I'm not going to be able to add it.
Using Google's recommended method does allow me to add the classes and gives me no notification that this code is targeted just to SDK level 5 users. This opens up too big of a possibility of adding in code that would break some users without knowing.
Does anyone know of any plugins, options, etc that would warn me at the places I have targeted SDK level 5 to keep this from happening?

I like how in winmo , you can click the top right icon area and pull up all open apps to quickly switch between them. with android, i have to hit the home screen, swipe left (usually one time) to find my app and "re-open" it again. it's a hassle. maybe android doesn't have this option, maybe it's just a winmo thing, but i'm still getting adjusted from winmo > android.

When we try to implement orientation in AP layer, we can set "android:screenOrientation" parameter in AndroidManifest.xml file or call "setRequestOrientation()" method of Activity class. But if I want to porting android in new HW device, how can I do? Do I need to modify the graphic driver, or just add configuration in program. (Actually I do some experiments but my AP cannot rotate) Besides, can every experts tell me when I set the "android:screenOrientation" parameter, which process will read this configuration, pass to where and which process will do the rotation?
