In my android application i am trying to run a application using GPRS connection and not WIFI.When tried to run in wifi the app runs fine.The browser works fine with the APN settings set but when trying to connect to server using my application it gives me socket exception.I am using the below permissions in manifest file.
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET"></uses-permission>
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_WIFI_STATE"></uses-permission>
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE"></uses- permission>
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.CHANGE_WIFI_STATE"></uses-permission>
<uses-permission android:name= "android.permission.CHANGE_NETWORK_STATE"></uses-permission>
<uses-permission android:name= "android.permission.WRITE_APN_SETTINGS" ></uses-permission>
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" ></uses-permission>
I am receiving Socket not connected exception.Is there any other permission which i need to add for using GPRS connection other than WIFI.

I have a simple client-server app on android. the android service communicates with the server via tcp sockets. the service sends a simple String to server which works. the server processes the string and sends back an object to the android service. the object implements the serializable interface. the object "leaves" the server successfully but at the point where the android service receives the object (socket.readObject()

I am able to connect to a Socket on my PC from my HTC 1 phone, via IP and successfully transfer data in a thread that gets rescheduled every few seconds. The problem is that after 15 minutes or so, the connection drops and my debug traces give me the "Network unreachable". A further clue is that if I plug in or replug in the USB cable I get reconnected.
I'm wondering what programmatic function will reconnect to the PC without having to fiddle with the USB cable. I've tried Wifimanger.reconnect and reassociate, neither did the trick. Perhaps if I knew what actions were peformmed when the usb cable is plugged in (which shouldn't have anything to do with my connection) I would be able to program them into my exception path.

I'm trying to set up a basic network connection using droids but I'm having problems.my server program:
Code:
ServerSocket ss = new ServerSocket(8888);
while(!end){
//Server is waiting for client here, if needed[code]....
the server runs until it reaches ss.accept() like it should but the client still can't connect. The client usually times out and nothing happens
I'm running both these programs using eclipse on my computer. I set the premissions in the manifest for both programs to let them use the internet and I have the port forwarding .

We have a simple client server architecture between our mobile device and our server both written in Java. An extremely simple ServerSocket and Socket implementation. However one problem is that when the client terminates abruptly (without closing the socket properly) the server does not know that it is disconnected. Furthermore, the server can continue to write to this socket without getting any exceptions. Why? According to documentation Java sockets should throw exceptions if you try to write to a socket that is not reachable on the other end!

We have a very patchy wi-fi network here. The wi-fi router's pretty old and I tend to need to switch it off and on every couple of days. Is there an app I can use that will - perhaps in conjunction with Locale so it only runs when I'm in the office - periodically check if our wi-fi connection is up and running?

Essentially Im trying to get many many java clients connect to a socket on my ColdFusion server (Using the Socket Gateway). However before i even start to code this, Im a little confused about sockets and their performance. First of all, are sockets meant for many(1000+) clients connecting to one socket (say port 2202) on one server? How is the performance if all there waiting for is basically a ping, or something such that when these clients receive this "ping" they can go get some new data.

My application needs to perform some activities in background (like interacting with the network and check the location and some other stuff), having or not the main activity visible. Which is the best way to achieve this? Should I write a service for each kind of job? Or just one service that performs everything? I am aware that I will need to launch threads / asynctasks in any case because the service runs on the same thread of the UI, but maybe having several services is a more clear and readable structure.

I want to check that the network connection is alive on the phone from program but when i try to run this code
Code:
private boolean isOnline() {
ConnectivityManager cm = (ConnectivityManager) getSystemService(Context.CONNECTIVITY_SERVICE);
NetworkInfo netInfo = cm.getActiveNetworkInfo();
if (netInfo != null && netInfo.isConnectedOrConnecting()) {
return true;
}
return false;
}
I get the message "Sorry 'Appname' is stopped unexpectedly. Try again".I might have to search the solution elsewhere, i added permissions for network, run the application and got the same error but when i tried to start it from the menu it said application not installed.

I am writing an Android app that should exchange data to a server over Bluetooth, with the server side on a PC running Ubuntu, using the bluez library, in C (or C++).
My Android app fails (IOException) when I try to connect to my server socket on the PC.
Here is essentially what I in the java code (in Android, full eclipse project here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2968234/ThinBTClient.zip)
CODE:...........
This throws IOException after a timeout of 10seconds or so.
On the server side (in Ubuntu 8.10), I basically set up a Bluetooth server socket, along the lines described in the example bluez/sdp-register.c
Down below is my C++ program. To compile it do
g++ -I/usr/include/glib-2.0/ -I/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include -o bt_server bt_server.cpp -lbluetooth
I can do the reverse succesfully, i.e. create a server socket in Android and connect from Linux, however this is not what I want to do!
I think either the problem has to do with my config of Ubuntu.
CODE:................

I have been looking at the ConnectivityManager class documented at http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/ConnectivityManage... .
I would like to know if an Android application can open a network connection (socket) on a specified network interface [on a device supporting multiple network interface types WiFi, Cellular, WiMax etc] ? I am looking for the capability for an application to open a socket on a given type of network for example over WiFi network or over 3G Cellular Data network.
If this is possible in Android, how would I code this requirement within the API Framework ? The ConnectivityManager enables an application to learn about available network connections and currently categorises them as either TYPE_WIFI or TYPE_MOBILE.
There is a member function in the ConnectivityManager class called requestRouteToHost(int,int) [url] which "Ensure that a network route exists to deliver traffic to the specified host via the specified network interface. An attempt to add a route that already exists is ignored, but treated as successful." Sounds like this would install an IP routing table entry to reach a given host via a specified network interface type (WiFi or Mobile). After calling this would it be sufficient for an application to open a socket and connect to the desired destination address ?
Or perhaps the application needs to bind() a socket to a local address of a network interface of the desired type (WiFi or Mobile) Or by setting a socket-level socket option of SO_DONTROUTE ?

Menu - Settings - Location - Enable GPS satellites
It states that enabling this will "require more battery plus view of sky"
When checked, it states "deselect to conserve battery"
So, the question is, should this be enabled?
I imagine for some applications, knowing your precise location should be useful, especially if the turn-by-turn maps are installed and used.
I'm thinking to deselect this, and selecting it at times when I need it.
So, to check or not to check?

I'm wondering if, with the G1, it's possible to force the network traffic to pass through the Wifi or through the Cell GSM network. I need to force an application to connect through the tower network to get some login information. Is this possible? Anyone have any ideas as to how this would be possible? I'm trying to accomplish this inside an app with the Android SDK (Sorry I wasn't more clear about that originally)

But now G1 cannot find the server through the ip "10.0.2.2".InetAddress serverAddr = InetAddress.getByName ("10.0.2.2"); ClientSocket = new Socket(serverAddr,SERVERPORT); The ClientSocket is null. I'm working on application that uses a socket connection.I've implemented 2 different Threads for the read() and the write() methods so they are not being blocked by the read.Everything is working well on the WiFi connection but when I switch to GSM connection the connection becomes unstable without any exception being thrown. It means that there are freezes.the write and read seems to work but no data is actually being piped.
