I want to select all the records in the database like this and display them in a gridview:SQLiteDatabase db=this.getWritableDatabase();Cursor cur= db.rawQuery("Select "+colName+", "+colAge+" from "+tableName, new String [] {});String [] from=new String []{DatabaseHelper.colName,DatabaseHelper.colAge};
int [] to=new int [] {R.id.colName,R.id.colAge};
SimpleCursorAdapter sca=new SimpleCursorAdapter(this,R.layout.gridrow,c,from,to);
GridView grid=(GridView)findViewById(R.id.grid);
grid.setAdapter(sca);but i receive the following exception:java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: column '_id' does not exist.the db table does not have a column with name '_id'so what is wrong with this code

Android :: Illegal Argument Exception When Trying Run Open GL ES 2.0 Application

Jun 12, 2010

When I add the following line to my GLSurfaceView class I get an IllegalArgumentException from some random place. I don't know where the problem is because it doesn't give a stack trace. set EGLContext Client Version(2); What else do I need to do to get an OpenGL ES 2.0 application to work? I have tested this with a completely empty renderer class (and also put breakpoints on every callback, and none of them get hit, indicating that the error occurs before my renderer even gets involved). Does anyone have a complete working example of how to get started with Android OpenGL ES 2.0 development? [There is also a stackoverflow entry here -> http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3026368/illegalargumentexception-w]

Yes, I know you need a unique resource id when calling the version of these functions that requires a key, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to create a resource id that can be used in this way. A final variable in my class wont work and neither will a hard coded value. Both threw an IllegalArgumentException. So what gives, how do you use these methods?

Android :: Illegal Argument Exception View Not Attached To Window Manager

Native Start.main(Native Method) Since it comes from external beta users I dont know what they were doing when they got it. Nor do i know how to reproduce it. The stack trace does not list any of our code. Usually, this error means that there was an orientation change while a dialog was open, thereby invalidating the reference to the dialog when android recreates it. All of my activities already uses Android:configChanges="keyboardHidden|orientation" in order to prevent them from doing this. We still get the error. Has anyone else seen this before? What could be the problem?

Android :: Davlik Bug - UNEXPECTED TOP-LEVEL EXCEPTION: Java.lang.IllegalArgumentException

May 10, 2009

I am attempting to integrate some previous libraries that we have within my new android project.

I have made several attempts including:

Importing the code as sub-projects (that are built using the android.jar)

Importing the code as jar files (from the built code)

Adding the files directly as part of my project

Reordering the dependencies

However for each one of these scenarios I keep getting the following exception thrown by the davlik compiler.

It is always picking the first class in the package (ie if I remove that class, it picks the next and so on).

It would appear to me that this is a compiler bug - somehow it's getting it's dependencies in a twist.

Anyone else experienced this? And/or have any ideas on how to get around this one?

I'm pretty sure the mVertexBuffer is successfully initialized. because i can see the size of the buffer is 48 right before the execution of the problematic line with the debugger. and this size is correct.

However it just doesn't work.

I initialized the buffer this way:

The code was actually copied from a opensource example.

Android :: Sqlite Exception No Such Table?

Nov 13, 2010

I have decided that I hate SQL and for that purpose I am trying to make a helper class that I can reuse over and over and never have to mess with it again but it isnt working!

Here is what i have right now:

CODE:.........

I have included several System.out.println() statements to help me debug the code and find problems so please ignore them. PrintDB is another test that I wrote that I am using to make sure everything is working. Now this is what I have written to make sure everything is working....

CODE:.....................

Running this code everything goes great and all the System.out.println() statements have the right information in them until it gets to the databaseView.setText(db.printTable(tableName));
part and it throws an exception

CODE:................

This has me so confused because that same line of code is used in the getColNames() method that was called several times before this and ran with no problem. Also if the table didn't exist wouldn't it have thrown an exception when I called insertRow()? I called that method 5 times in a row with not a single exception thrown! What is happening here?

Implement onCreate() in your DBOpenHelper. Put there content of the createTable() method.

Why would it be necessary to create the table in the onCreate() method? If I were to do this would I be able to use my existing method to do so and just call it from this method?

And the second why you don't use content providers and uri >concept which is already SQLless?

Android : Working With SQLite Database / Getting Cursor Out Of Bounds Exception

Jun 30, 2009

I am having some trouble working with the SQLite database. I am able to create the database, add to it, and delete from it with no problem by following the Notepad examples, but I am trying to avoid duplicates and therefore want to check to see if an entry exists already.

Below is the code I have for testing to see if a game exists. I get the correct Log message of "No Games" when there are no games, as well as the correct value for column from getColumnIndex which is proven to me by the log printout telling me that column = 1.

The error message that I receive if I don't catch the exception says "Caused by android.database.CursorIndexOutOfBoundsException: Index -1 requested, with a size of 1

Where is Index -1 being requested if my call to getColumnIndex is returning 1? Code...

Game :: Android Java.net.Unknown Host Exception

Jul 20, 2010

I have android code that uses a background process to routinely (e.g. hourly) connect to a content source on the web to check for updated content. As new users download the app and run it for the first time, it seems (and this is just a "seems at the moment) that in this first-run situation, because the DNS for our servers are not cached already on the device, those first series of connections fail with dreaded UnknownHostException: Host is unresolved. And of course, the application tries again later and (again, "it seems like") it is all working -- perhaps because the OS has had time to actually resolve the address. So, my question(s) are: (1) Do other Android developers see this behavior with their deployed applications as well? First time, a series of "host unresolved" issues that work themselves out later. (2) Does anyone have a better strategy for "warming up the DNS" so-to-speak so that the first real connections work? or perhaps do you just re-try with some back-off looping when you encounter this exception? I was contemplating having a separate thread that tries to fetch a small text file from our server and have it just loop until it gets it and maybe (not sure about this part) block the other outgoing network connections until it succeeds.

It was written like the below:

Now I come to class B where I will call this method like the below:

I was asked a question in an interview as follows:

Why does the method have a throws Exception in its declaration? Is it that on of the methods called in the implementation throws the base class exception? Also If we get a exception during calling the method (fileConnect( )) control goes to catch block. After executing catch where should the control go, what should be sent to base case?

Android :: Java Rare And Impossible Exception Causing Force Close

Apr 19, 2010

I have an interesting problem being reported to me from an android application I have published. I have a two-dimensional array that I am iterating through using two for loops like so:

for (int i = 0; i < arr.length; ++i)
{
for (int j = 0; j < arr[i].length; ++j)
{
if (arr[i][j] != 0)
// does stuff
}
}

The problem is, somehow arr[i][j] != 0 is throwing an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException. But very rarely. I have thousands of people use the app on a daily basis and get maybe twenty force close reports. Is this something I can't avoid, maybe a problem with the phones memory, etc. or is there something I can do that I haven't thought of yet?

Android :: Column _id Does Not Exist

Jul 29, 2010

I'm having trouble with something that works in the Notepad example.

Here's the code from the NotepadCodeLab/Notepadv1Solution:

CODE:.................

This code seems to work fine. But just to be clear, I ran the adb utility and run sqlite3 I inspected the schema as follows:

CODE:...............

All seems good to me.

Now on to My App, which as far as I can see is basically the same with a few minor changes. I've simplified and simplified my code, but the problem persists.

CODE:..............

When I run my app, I get a RuntimeException and the following prints in LogCat from my Log.e() statement:

LogCat Message: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: column '_id' does not exist

So, back to sqlite3 to see what's different about my schema:

CODE:.................

I don't see how I'm missing the '_id'.

Can anyone point out what I've done wrong?

One thing that's different between my app and the Notepad example is that I started by creating my application from scratch using the Eclipse wizard while the sample app comes already put together. Is
there some sort of environmental change I need to make for a new app to use a sqlite database?
